the first time I heard the boot of Criss Cross I was pissed. My initial thought was damn - what a missed opportunity. I loved it then - love it now. Just a terrific song! I'm happy it finally has an official release.

I guess I’m disappointed though that it doesn’t sound any better than my bootleg versions. The Some Girls extra tracks sounded incredible but Criss Cross sounds like the boot version and not a cleaner version.

Thanks GLS, this is all jarring my memory, I do recall the two or three layers of vocal stacked on that word. Originally i was thinking it was a more obvious censorship thing, like a total blank space or a bleep, but yeah, now I recall that.

And apparently there was a version where that WASN'T the case, like the cd issue cited in the link you provided. Which was a very interesting thread. I wish I had read that before posting my questions.

So yeah it will be interesting to see which version is used, the now "collector item" censored mix or the untouched version. Seems the trend would be the latter.

Funny thing is, I always thought that distortion heightened the impact of the passage. Even to the point of not remembering it as distortion.

Some in that other thread mentioned they thought the song was an example of poorly developed lyrics, but I always thought it was very good basic Stones imagery at their nastiest. Really funny too. And kool that McQueen was ok with his mention. Probably got front row tickets next time they came through town.

jb

For years I thought the record was just dirty. I must've cleaned GHS a gazillion times. I can't recall if I ever got an original issue of it on vinyl.

Somewhere there must be some citations or notes etc of exactly what release it was on (ie North America, US, Canada... specific, regional, continent, etc). Looking this kind of thing up gets numbing.

Sorry...'Criss Cross' just doesn't do it for me so I cannot share in the enthusiasm of those who feel otherwise. Not all that excited about the 'Goats Head Soup' re-issue either. The expanded 'Some Girls' edition, however, was a completely different story: a lot great songs that finally got the treatment they deserved.

Of course, I reserve the right to change my point-of-view re: 'GHS' once I have an opportunity to listen to the final product but at this point in time, it's going to take a lot for that to happen.

That's hilarious. The SG reissue was basically a bust!

'Hilarious'? What...the fact that I happen to like the 'Some Girls' re-issue? While it may have been a 'bust', that means absolutely nothing to me; I couldn't care less if it was a commercial success or not. It all boils down to personal tastes and preferences.

When first hearing Criss Cross Mind, the 2 minute version that appeared on a Japanese soundtrack in the early 90s, I really loved it - so great sound and energy.
But I feel the whole song is way too long, and it's a bit of a parody, something they were close to plenty of times especially on the IORR album. When seeing the official vulgar soft-porn video it gives me the wibe of Aerosmith.....a band I can't stand.

The video is okay I guess. Reminded me of a couple of girls I met when I was young. They're usually in their third abortion by age 20.

Mick (who called the shots on this one) would take it as a compliment as 20 yo girls (with or without abortions) are his target (from a marketing pov).

We the menopausal/andropausol IORR crowd are exactly the people he doesn't want to target. Mick wants young people at his shows hence this trendy vid.

Why should he target us - he already has gotten us a long time ago... We once were his target audience...grinning smiley

Seriously, it looks like that he get fed up with the memory line he took with "Plundered My Soul" and "No Spare Parts" and thought that's enough of circulating old footage. Now something different.

Well I think it's just the Rolling Stones marketing company that wants to portray them as a band thats popular with young people, nobody on YouTube wants to see babyboomer aged fans dancing to Stones songs, even though they're the people that are actually buying these musical tourist trap releases

Exactly. Aerosmith's You Gotta Move DVD has all these really attractive models at the front of the audience. The message is "Aerosmith are still a hot band who are popular with sexy women". Trying way too hard to be cool? Probably.

Criss cross, great song, great sound, great groove.
But bizarre and quickly annoying "double voice" constantly, like one echoing the other one...

Well the book was great as it had lotsa beautiful pictures and the poster from Pathe Marconi with the band and Keith holding the black Custom is a joy to look at, nevermind the bonus cd with the coolest God*amn intro lick since Low Down, (Keep Up Blues) and When You're Gone as the two never-heard-before highlights. But compared with the Quadrophenia SD set I received the same week it was a bit underwhelming I agree, although better than Exile. SF SDS put things on the right track and now we hope for the best come GHSsmileys with beer

Same in Paradiso'95 with the Stones in Amsterdam.

That's a possibility... grinning smiley or Mick wanted to make sure nobody would mistake a track titled "Criss Cross" for an outtake from Bob Dylan's 1980 "born again" period and go "yuck! I don't click on this!".
Hence the glam trash/porno-chic vid?

Did seem an odd choice for a video considering this day in age of sensitivity.

Criss Cross lacks a killer chorus. I like the riff and energy, but it just isn’t melodious enough. To my ears, it’s easy to hear why it didn’t make the cut back in ‘73.

Don't listen to it on your smartphone or laptopspeakers, but on a hifi-set, you will hear the difference. Almost all of the Some Girls tracks on CD2 have new vocals. Criss Cross has some added (harmony) vocals (around 2:00-2:30), more dynamics, sounds pretty good to me.

"Hilarious" that you like the horrible SG reissue. I thought it was a bust artistically: they put a bunch of crap songs on it instead of the good ones they left off.

We should have gotten the original vocal-version of Keep Up Blues as a bonus track. It's hilarious (and good). The SG deluxe-album is excellent.

The other tracks received overdubs just prior to release on this package, with new lead vocals by Jagger on all except "I'm Not Signifying", backing vocals in places by past and current Stones tour singers Cindy Mizelle and Lisa Fischer, and several new guitar parts by Keith Richards, and Mick Taylor on "Plundered My Soul."
