To my ears "Criss Cross" embodies the creative bankrupt they where dealing with at the time. Everybody does his job on an ok level or on the automatic pilot if you wish. Filler at best.

The video is okay I guess. Reminded me of a couple of girls I met when I was young. They're usually in their third abortion by age 20.

Mick (who called the shots on this one) would take it as a compliment as 20 yo girls (with or without abortions) are his target (from a marketing pov).

We the menopausal/andropausol IORR crowd are exactly the people he doesn't want to target. Mick wants young people at his shows hence this trendy vid.

Why should he target us - he already has gotten us a long time ago... We once were his target audience...grinning smiley

Seriously, it looks like that he get fed up with the memory line he took with "Plundered My Soul" and "No Spare Parts" and thought that's enough of circulating old footage. Now something different.

Does the music add something to the video or the other way around, or is this supposed to be an instant product? I must be missing something- yes times have changed.

Too early to tell for absolute sure I guess, and I wish I knew before dropping Aud$360 on the two boxes, but I’ll be right royally pi55ed off if StarStar in the new remix is a remix of the censored, scrambled, muddled version in the last remasters. I want the original released version remixed, please, not the travesty that was the last remastered version.

Better filler than anything from 1986 onward.

Is it "walking around with a razor, she want to you use it every day?"

Creative Bankruptcy? Great songs like 100 Years Ago,Angie,Heartbreaker,Fingerprint File, Time. waits for No One,Winter , Silver Train.Bob Dylan said Angie is a song he wished he’d written.

Maybe I should express myself more precise: The songs you mention are all great. "Criss Cross" just sounds very bored to me, like ok guys, we haven't got any better. Maybe it just lacks a decent guitar solo.

To me it's unique and exhilirating and the band is firing on all cylinders really. But it sort of slogs along aimlessly after a certain point and there's no real conclusion. While that type of endless groove works great for some tunes, here it sort of leaves your head scratching, and to now have it all cleaned up sort of magnifies the meandering. Still though, it kicks ass.

Ultimately, I'm pleased as punch that they finally released this tune officially, and have been listening to it nonstop since it's been cleaned up and released. It really shows how killer the Stones were back in the day vs. almost everything post Tattoo You - even most of their "throwaways" were absolute keepers whether finished or not. At this point, my feelings are this: I've always loved the boot (and always will), and maybe even more when it was still unofficially released which is a bit selfish I suppose - it was sort of a hidden secret and gem, but now it's widely available for all to hear. As I've said before, seems the Stones future lies in it's past. With the exception of Ghost Town (which might be the lone exception of a new good tune they've been working on - at least they were able to finish it), and without any more new tunes or a new album anytime soon, what else is there? And without any live shows in the foreseeable future, we as fans will be continuously be living in the past. Hope they keep digging up and releasing the golden nuggets - especially when they're probably so much better than anything new they can come up with from this point forward. Wondering if they'll release another single tune from the upcoming set (maybe re-release Angie as a single?), and if so will they release another useless video?

Their next single will be Scarlet, the song has potential to be a great marketing tool for the re-issue, we can expect a video, physical single too.

Wondering why there isn't a physical release single for Criss Cross?
I would have been happy to purchase either a 7" or 10" vinyl single even if they were selfish and didn't add a B-side tune like they did with Ghost Town and the blues cover a few years ago.

YES!!!! smiling bouncing smiley I'm so excited to hear "Scarlet" in its entirety. From the five seconds I've heard, it sounds like it had the potential to be a hit back in the day. Plus a single release will be fantastic grinning smiley

I have to say that Criss Cross leaped straight into my ears and heart. The song drives forward like little else, thanks to Charlie and Keith (and Mick T on bass?) clearly beeing on top form! Sleazy vocals and lyrics from Jagger as only he could do it in the early seventies. cool smiley

In comparison, Ghost Town didn't excite me at all.

I would like a single of Scarlet b/w Criss Cross. And a unique picture sleeve please. Would prefer 7" but 10" or 12" would be good too.

But Rod up there brought up an interesting potential issue: do you mean to tell me the RS have been circulating a censored version of Star Star these past years/decades? I believe I had heard that before but did not know if it had superceded the original version. I take it it is the "f*cker" part that is censored out, or is it the talking about various real life people? If it is not the original vocals, unaltered, then that would be a real travesty, and I had not even thought of that angle, or that song to tell the truth. It was pretty bold, back then, but I thought now every third grader uses the term.

What has the world come to, I ask you.

The original US version includes special vocal overdubs to disguise some explicit lyric lines (the word p*ssy).

The South African version includes special percussive overdubs to disguise the f-word in the chorus.

Re: Goats Head Soup Reissue - September 4
Posted by: jbwelda ()

Oh yeah, "p*ssy" was the word (and I am censoring it right now) but I have always had the US original release (though come to think of it, I may have a UK version as I always preferred them to the US pressing), and I don't recall the word being altered or covered. So was it plainly legible on the UK or some other pressing, and the USA version was a distinct difference?

Going to have to go dig it out now and hear this again.

And then that puts my question above in a different context: was there a further censoring of the song in later releases, (other than the S African version you cited) or did it truly go all the way back to one or another original release?

I seem to remember this "censored" version of Star Star but it was a long time ago, it was on vinyl and I didn't have the original vinyl LP. I haven't heard it in ages. The original version is on GHS as far as I know.

Apparently the first run of GHS UMe reissues had the censored version.

A matter of taste perhaps. There are good songs and mediocre ones. Charlie and Bill provide a beat that reminds me of some early live versions of Bitch. Apart from that the only thing that is going on is Preston and open G G sus4.G open G sus4.G open G Gsus4. open G Gsus4. etc etc, and a monotonus vocal line. The videoclip on youtube with these 16 year old girls give compensation for that of course. Thanks GLS, this is all jarring my memory, I do recall the two or three layers of vocal stacked on that word. Originally i was thinking it was a more obvious censorship thing, like a total blank space or a bleep, but yeah, now I recall that.

And apparently there was a version where that WASN'T the case, like the cd issue cited in the link you provided. Which was a very interesting thread. I wish I had read that before posting my questions.

So yeah it will be interesting to see which version is used, the now "collector item" censored mix or the untouched version. Seems the trend would be the latter.

Funny thing is, I always thought that distortion heightened the impact of the passage. Even to the point of not remembering it as distortion.

Some in that other thread mentioned they thought the song was an example of poorly developed lyrics, but I always thought it was very good basic Stones imagery at their nastiest. Really funny too. And kool that McQueen was ok with his mention. Probably got front row tickets next time they came through town.

Well I think it's just the Rolling Stones marketing company that wants to portray them as a band thats popular with young people, nobody on YouTube wants to see babyboomer aged fans dancing to Stones songs, even though they're the people that are actually buying these musical tourist trap releases
