Chicago won't trade Patrick Kane back to his home town! He's still playing at an elite level and the Hawks are making a push for the playoffs! Maybe in a couple years! The next few weeks will determine which teams are buyers and which are sellers.
I think Tampa in the East and St. Louis in the west for cup winners, although there are always upsets once the playoffs start. Canucks are hot right now and could make it deep into the playoffs.
From the 2019 draft, both first and second overall picks, Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko haven't really lit the league on fire. Neither has 3rd overall Kirby Dach on the Hawks. I think Quinn Hughes, Jack's older brother, who the Canucks took last year, will win the Calder. Also don't count out Blackhawk Dominic Kubalik, who is playing very well lately.
Sounds like the Seattle team is going to be called the Kraken, not sure how giant squid are affiliated with Seattle! Sockeyes was mentioned and many in Vancouver were saying that the Canucks logo is the Orca, which feed on salmon!

Kane is in the 5th year of an 8 year deal at $10 million per year cap hit and he is 31 years old and has already won three Stanley Cups for Chicago. The smart move would be to move him now and get some premium picks and players. The Sabres will be in the bottom 10 AGAIN for the 2020 draft possibly a lottery winner. To move him now makes sense, Hawks will not win the Cup this season.

Look at St. Louis last year, one of the worst teams at mid season but then went on a roll to win the cup. Any team that makes the playoffs has a shot at winning. Also, why would the Sabres give up their future to get a player that is at his peak right now and soon to be on the downside of his career. It's not as though they're legit cup contenders right now. A good young nucleus of players that will be a lot better in a few years. Also, the Sabres have no cap space currently and several players becoming unrestricted free agents. Eichel, Skinner and Okposo make up $25 million for the next 4 years. Can't afford to bring on a $10.5 million dollar player. I would think re-signing Reinhart and Bogosian will be the priorities.

I would send Reinhart and Bogosian to Chicago to make a deal with picks. The Sabres badly need a second line center. Kane still has 3 to 5 good years left. Kane with Skinner would be lethal. Okposo is hurt again and pretty much a bust with that contract. The Sabres also need a big hitting defenseman. A deal for Kane is out of the conference even better. The NHL salary cap is $82 million.

Besides, look what at Toronto pays: Tavares $11 million, Marner $11 million, Matthews $11.6 million, Nylander $7.5 million, Rielly $5 million

That is what the Leafs are paying and that's why they're in so much trouble. Can't afford to pay the top 4 players half the team salary! At this point they're barely in a playoff position, next few weeks will determine if they will be sellers at the deadline!
My Hawks actually have cap space right now because of injuries so I want to see what their plans are. Hopefully they make a good run and are in a playoff position so we'll see. Stan Bowman's job may be on the line if they don't make it.

Do you think Chicago jumped the gun by firing Quennville in late 2018?

But back to Kane, it think a deal makes sense for both teams, Chicago needs to refresh the roster with more youth and the Sabres have youth and need veteran leadership that can produce.

It sucks that Quenneville was fired but as they say, coaches are hired to be fired. Stan had to do something because he probably knew his job was on the line.

One of my favourite lines of all time was the French Connection line the Sabres had back in the day. Rick Martin, Rene Robert and Gilbert Perreault!

The Capitals are playing great, and Ovechkin seems very focused. I think they are going to win the Cup.

The Seattle Kraken is just a horrible name. Just wait for all the crackhead references. Sockeyes is also no bueno. Sounds too much like the Seattle Suckys. I thought the Seattle Freeze was a great name. It has the obvious ice reference, and the inside joke about the aloofness of the locals.

Oddly enough even though Seattle might have more rainy days per year than a lot of US cities when it comes to total inches per year Seattle is not even in the top 30 according to most lists. Note: Some lists differ from others.

Have you noticed the war on fossil fuels lately? NY just enacted a permanent ban on fracking. Pennsylvania wasn't listening.

Pegula needs to work with NY State and renovate New Era Field. Keep it in Orchard Park. Forget about downtown Buffalo. Don't take on more debt for an empty venue 11 months a year.

I like it, but I'm a Blue Jacket man...

Good lookin' designs, maybe emphasize the tentacle a little more. But, these things always evolve over time so they can market new swag.

One big, positive, 2020 note, presumably there won't be an anti-Kraken demographic needing to protest this team nickname, being mythological and all, but I may be proven wrong!!

I'm ready for hockey and baseball, and all apologies to Leafs' fans, in advance...

You don't mess with the Kraken!

Anyone going out to the deap seas do know that there is a danger out there, larger than anything, and Seattle is very much a city by the sea, so I am sure any team coming to Seattle might feel the horror of the Kraken, if the new NHL team in Seattle is living up to the legends.

Kraken (Wikipedia)

The English word kraken is taken from the modern Scandinavian languages, originating from the Old Norse word kraki. In both Norwegian and Swedish Kraken is the definite form of krake, a word designating an unhealthy animal or something twisted (cognate with the English crook and crank). In modern German, Krake (plural and declined singular: Kraken) means octopus, but can also refer to the legendary kraken. Kraken is also an old Norwegian word for octopus and an old euphemism in Swedish for whales, used when the original word became taboo as it was believed it could summon the creatures.

I was pulling for Seattle Totems (minor league team was named that when I was a kid). After reading BVs post, I can live with the Kraken. Maybe Keith & Johnny Depp will show up! grinning smiley

Funny.. Bjornulf was the first person I thought of after googling "Kraken", knew he'd be familiar smiling smiley

Thanks for the further insights on the origin of the name bv, perhaps it will grow on me..
We do have a lot of whales.. but perhaps they will want to "summon the creature" winking smiley

Already seeing plenty of ribbing on the internet.. "Seattle Karens" the arenas new nick-name
"The Krak House" etc cool smiley

They will be the second pro team (I'm sure someone could correct this) that I know of, both in the NHL, that will not have an S at the end of their name.

Well, ha ha, it could be a lot worse of a name!

Still have two Seattle Totems pucks from when I was a kid smiling smiley
The name may grow on me, but would have loved to see the Totems..

The name of their new arena for those that haven't heard is..
The Climate Pledge Arena... Nice gesture, all for climate change awareness.. but doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Will be nice to have NHL in the city though.

Fun fact: The Seattle Metropolitans were the first US team to win the Stanley Cup (1917)

Kraken, Minnesota Wild, TB Lightning. I guess if you want to get technical, Red Sox and White Sox! Several WNBA teams don't have an S at the end of their names. I don't follow WNBA but I know there's Reign and Liberty.

HA! I knew I was forgetting some! I think the first one was the Colorado Avalanche. I thought it was stupid that they didn't stick with their original name. It's too bad Minnesota didn't use the North Stars again.

I thought Seattle Reign was a WNBA team but they're a women's soccer team.

I've loved Krakens since day 1, so glad about that & GM Ron Francis is a pro. I'm excited about the expansion draft in Jun '21 & the Cap Space Squeeze over the next 3 seasons as my team finishes rebuilding.

I've already posted a few photoshopped Seattle Karen's memes & logos on FB today at SEA's expensesmiling smileygrinning smiley. Krakheads (instead of Deadheads) are their fans. They'll play at the Krakhouse (SEA Ice Rink). Even had the Karen haircut & Starbucks cup on it. spinning smiley sticking its tongue outsmiling bouncing smiley

I'm a hockey fan the last 45+ years. Red Wings, Isles, Lightning. Also kinda like the Kings, Rangers & Panthers (FL team). Excited to have hockey back.

And in the CFL, the Edmonton Eskimos have announced they will be changing their name. Don't think they've come up with a replacement name yet, although Empire would be good, they can then keep their EE logo.
Glad my Chicago Blackhawks aren't changing their name! If they did, I'm sure the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL would have changed theirs, too.

With the NHL playoffs coming up soon, I'm actually hoping my Hawks lose to the Edmonton Oilers. The 8 losing teams in this opening round all get a shot at the first overall pick who will be Alexis Lafreniere so I'd rather then get that 12.5% chance at that than go on to the next round of the playoffs!

Why not more grounded names like "Millionaires On Ice" or "Overpaid 20-somethings"? But I guess that would be out of the question? Anyway, our season 2019/2020 (SHL, Swedish Hockey League) never happened.
As soon as Corona hit they cancelled it. So no one won. A non-season. I think they could have handled it differently. But why should they listen to me?

I hear the NHL is about to re-open again. That will be a long season... How are they going to handle that?

Magic, Heat and Jazz in the NBA are at least three in that league without the S.

I thought Kraken was strange at first but now I'm starting to like it.

Let's Go Rangers! First real game back noon on August 1.
