He Stopped Loving Her Today is such a classic amongst others. Got to see him once. While it wasn't transcendent like Merle Haggard it was still pretty good.

Well, I asked my old pappy why he called his brew
White lightning 'stead of mountain dew
I took a little sip and right away I knew
As my eyes bugged out and my face turned blue
Lightning started flashin', thunder started clashin'
Fshhhhhoooo..........white lightnin'........................spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

And her clothes are in the closet
Like she left them when she tore my world apart...

Gram Parsons said, "Country is the other side of Rock And Roll".

And I say that also.

Love the duet with Keith "Say It's Not You".

IMHO, he is the greatest country singer.

Hank, Sr. would be greatest songwriter.

I would put "She Thinks I Still Care" in the league with "He Stopped Loving her Today".

Love "White Lightnin'" and "The Race Is On" from earlier days.

One of my faves. There's a number of his songs that stay on my permanent listening list. The first song of his I remember hearing is "The Race Is On" which, if I remember right, got airplay on top 40 radio back in the day. There may still be some torrents of him live on Dime.

I posted this video of "The Race Is On" a couple of years back, but it's worth posting again:

This is one of my favorite clips of any artist in any genre. The brilliant economy of the playing, the exhilaration of the singing, the sheer joy of the performance.

It's worth coming back to again and again as an antidote to all the noisy, fake crap that calls itself "country" (or even "music") today.

Here's another favorite by George:

You know this old world is full of singers
But just a few are chosen
To tear your heart out when they sing
Imagine life without them...

Was lucky to get to see him when the Stones postponed the Beacon Theatre gig. Great show at Carnegie Hall with Kris Kristofferson opening on Halloween.

love him....Sinatra said he and Billie hOliday are the two greatest American singers. I am not sure of that, as I don't like rating musicians but they are bother greats.

his bio is amazing to read
