RIP Black Mamba. So hard to accept that he's gone at such a young age. Wasn't a Lakers fan but I liked him, probably my favourite player after Jordan and Dr. J.

very sad news. Add to the list of famous people killed in helicopter crashes that includes Bill Graham and Stevie Ray Vaughan

I cannot believe it.

To happen the day after LeBron just passed him for 3rd all-time in total points is goddamned surreal. I was just watching old ESPN archive videos this morning of Kobe and LeBron talking back in 2009.

RIP to the Black Mamba.

C'mon, no reason to be fighting. It is being reported out there...it can always be corrected later.

Wow...a bit stunned when I heard it on the radio...tragic. As a lifelong Lakers fan this is very sad.
He'll always be remembered amongst the very best - not only in basketball, but in all of sports in general.
Scoring a whopping 60 points in his very last game as a Laker back in 2016...........

RIP KOBE.

that response makes a lot of sense...not. out of respect for bv, not going to say what i really think. this is a pretty huge story & was putting up info for the benefit of our friends abroad. NBA is pretty big world wide & Kobe was 1 of the greatest players of all time. nothing but respect for him as a player & he was branching out into other areas like film. btw: name calling is really immature.

Thanks for the updates crholmstrom - watching the news and it's a tragic scene - only about 30 miles from where I live.
News conference at 2:00 PM Pacific time.

such a shocker. i was a season ticket holder for several years & saw him play a lot in his young days. got drafted into the league at age 17 & was almost immediately an impact player. when he & Shaq teamed up they were near unstoppable

So sad...it's wall-to-wall local coverage here in L.A.

Listening to Jerry West being interviewed right now - he's absolutely devastated.

I got to see 3 Vancouver Grizzlies games: Both times Jordan and the Bulls were in town and once when the Lakers were in town. I remember the Lakers game wasn't too close and after Kobe made a basket, Snoop Dog was in the front row and he got up and they high fived.

From the L.A. Times:

“Particularly when he was young, to be a part of his life and to watch his career grow, watch him grow, this is one of the most tragic days of my life,” said fellow Lakers legend Jerry West, 81. West was the general manager for the Lakers in 1996 and maneuvered Bryant’s immediate trade to the Lakers when he was drafted. “I know somewhere along the way I guess I’ll come to grips with it. But now I have all these different emotions regarding him. The things I watched him do on the basketball court, but more importantly he was going to make a difference off the court, and he was making a difference off the court. It’s so unexplainable. This is going to take a long time for me.”

Very shocked and saddened to read this. Even people who know nothing about basketball knew Kobe. He leaves his wife and 3 daughters, aged 17, 3 and 7 months. Thinking about his family, friends and fans.

Unfortunately you were correct crholmstrom. Sorry you were attacked like that. This is sad news and no need for the bs in this tragic accident.

Very tragic news.
Thoughts with the family members and loved ones of all the victims.

This clip of Doc Rivers responding to the news is a heartbreaker.
