Never a big fan, but feel badly for Kramer, although it seems it may be a combination of not being physically or mentally/emotionally able to step up for the gigs. To have security at the gates to ban him from rehearsals, with paparazzi on hand to film the encounter is humiliating at best.

Worked a part time security gig in Seattle when they played here in the early nineties, ended up being assigned to their dressing room door for the afternoon/evening. Became a bigger fan of Tyler as he took a liking to me for some reason, joking with me all day and was genuinely very cool (got invited in for food and to watch porn.. strange night/funny story cool smiley) Even then one of the many takeaways from the experience for me was what a prima donna Kramer seemed. Literally carried backstage after the gig as one example that turned my head.

Aerosmith says they won't be talking about it anymore in the press as it is a "family issue". With family like that...
What a mess.

I went to a meet & greet back in the day & Joey refused to participate. No big deal & who knows what was going on but maybe indicative. Rest of the band were pretty cool especially Tom Hamilton. Steven Tyler got distracted by some large tracts of land that were present if you get my drift... winking smiley

Tom seems by far to be the nicest guy in the band. Probably the only well-adjusted individual in Aerosmith (maybe Brad as well, but I don't know much about him).

I've never been a fan of Joey's drumming...his backbeat has always come off as stiff and lacking in groove, especially on their post-70s material. He's got good chops but not much rock'n'roll swing.

This is a complicated matter. I can kinda see the band's point of view, but it's still humiliating for Joey.

I saw them in MGM NATIONAL HARBOR right outside of DC.
They were great but lacked the punch that Joey usually gives them — Tyler said
Douglass was replacing Joey tonight because he hurt his ankle during the rehearsal—that hopefully he’d return to the tour soon —that was 8/8/19

Great show —small place—and very interactive with the band members —Tyler cane down into the audience several times while performing.

It’s easy to get hooked on pain killers and then not be able to sleep for days —takes months to beat it — I had a knee replacement— it’s just a thing —Doc told me it was going to happen —sorry it’s turned ugly —hell there was a few years ago they threw Steven out and were going to have singer auditions for a tour — crazy

Great live band though —I love their select live classics

Hmm, on one hand I'm sad for the guy but then I saw a picture of him trying to get into rehearsals. He's looking sad with 2 security guards, the whole thing just seems scripted or a publicity stunt. Maybe I'm wrong of course.

I have a sinking suspicion he's hooked on opioids....

just a hunch.

He seems out of it in that video. Very short, yes, but the dude's in a daze.

Agreed, but he seems crystal clear while looking into the camera. Right on time...

I just find this non-descript "he's not fit to play" or whatever a bit odd.

....and if he had some sort of an injury, the odds are he got offered/prescribed opioids....doctors are prescribing that crap like candy.

"doctor prescribes, drug store supplies...who's gonna help him to kick it?"

It's not as bad as it used to be 10-15 years ago. There's been a massive crackdown on doctor shopping and pill mills.

All opioid prescriptions are flagged by the DEA, so it's not like you can get 5 different prescriptions from 5 different doctors anymore.

But that's really beside the point...with Joey's level of fame and wealth, he could get anything he wants if he got hooked initially. I don't know if he was into heroin back in the '70s the way Steve and Joe were, but that would be a giant red flag.

That incident was clearly staged and the longer this drags on the more it becomes clear this is just manufactured drama to get people even talking about Aerosmith.

There's gotta be more to it than just he's still hurt. They've been together forever. They just suddenly developed a hatred for Kramer? They're at the very end of their existence.

Based on the live videos I've seen of them recently, if he's as bad as they're portraying him to be, then he must be downright awful, because Perry's playing sucks and Tyler is just gasping through everything, taking shortcuts, hurrying up... not good at all.

Perry looks like death warmed over. I wonder if he's partying too much when he's doing those Hollywood Vampires gigs...which would be ironic, considering Alice Cooper is basically the godfather of rock'n'roll sobriety.

But yeah, they've got maybe 5 years left as a viable touring act at most. Why inject all this nonsense now?

I'll speculate, even though I'm sure there's a lot going on behind the scenes that we don't know about.

It seems bigger than just a Grammy performance. We all know that could easily be faked with a drummer playing offstage. Age takes it's toll on everyone, and it's very rare for a 5 piece band to have all its original members. Maybe Joey can't play anymore but his ego won't allow him to retire/quit. I assume that if the rest of the band really wanted him out then he would have been out already. Maybe their contracts don't allow them to fire him.

That's a good point.

He's going to be 70 in June and, despite how I feel about his playing style, Aerosmith material is challenging and he hits hard.

Strange moment last night. Joey joined his bandmates onstage to receive a MusiCares benefit gala, but didn't perform:

He's also the only one besides Steven who gave a speech:

Strange and sad situation.

They seem to be in their very final days. They do not have the depth of true Blues and Country roots to lean on; like other classic bands. They have ZERO street credibility left, there is just no way they can profess to be walking with any kind of integrity. They look positively bizarre in those outfits and hairdo's.
And you know, all this can be secondary if your playing is on point, but even that is gone. I don't know what happened to Perry. He is like a shell.
Tyler IMO always was the best musician of the band. If he would quit trying to look like the madam of a nail salon, he should go solo. His solo album IMO was a right step.

That Grammy performance was rubbish. Tyler’s singing was rough and struggling, Perry’s guitaring was unexpected bad sounding. I was embarrassed for them. Run DMC saved the performance but even that sounded rough.

>We all know that could easily be faked with a drummer playing offstage.

No self respecting band would ever do something like that.

Wait...this is Aerosmith though.

The bottom line for me is, how uncomfortable would it be to have someone playing drums that no one wanted in the band? Its like, I wouldn't want to be anywhere I wasn't wanted, and you would think if the animosity were that deep, they would be sabotaging each others moves every chance they got. If the other members don't want you in the band, contract or not, it would seem proper to move on and let the lawyers do the thing for you for any uncollected monies that might be owed.

And I don't understand why it would be this guys duty to PAY for a replacement drummer. Maybe if he is on retainer even when not in the band, what (aside from a contract of course) possible rationale would there be for the guy kicked out of a band to have to pay for his replacement?

Makes zero sense to me...and that typically means...publicity stunt.

These guys have sucked forever (the only exception for me was the Run DMC collaboration which at least breathed a little life into the almost dead corpse) and what with their main man going all Hollywood and all, f'em.

Based on the simplistic drumming at tonights Grammys on living on the Edge and Walk This Way (sort of an oom pah pah, oom pah pah) , seems he could have easily been on stage playing with them.
I'm no drummer, but Joey must be completely out if it if he can't even handle that.

Here is the review of the Aerosmith atrocities from The Washington Post

Aerosmith and Run-DMC

Steven Tyler, sporting a dead caterpillar on his upper lip (and, eventually a sideways baseball cap — really), sounded flat and almost hoarse as he launched into “Livin' on the Edge” for no apparent reason, given that a performance of “Walk This Way” had been touted the entire evening. Soon enough, though, Aerosmith transitioned into the rock-rap hybrid that took the world by storm in 1986.

After singing the first verse, Tyler stopped to say something was missing. Cue Run-DMC bursting through a small brick wall, just like in the famous music video. Let’s cut to the chase. It sounded awful. It sounded so bad, it was hard to tell whether there were technical malfunctions or not. All the sounds — the voices, the record scratches, the guitars, the drums — blended together into one droning monotone, like listening to a dial tone at top volume. It sounded like they were individually performing the song in different rooms at different times. We’d offer a more in-depth review, but we couldn’t actually differentiate any of the noises. The best moment of the performance was when Tyler yelled “let’s get out of here” because we knew this particular embarrassment was finally ending.

I've watched a few live Aerosmith shows on DVD over the years and they've never fully clicked with me. Always thought of them as the 70s version of Motley Crue: a few stunning tracks mixed with an awful lot of average crud.
