He had to audition to prove he was fit enough to play, but was turned down by his bandmates. Now he has to pay his replacement (his drum tech) $10.000 a week for rehearsals and $20.000 a week for shows, out of his own pocket.

Pretty wild...

[ultimateclassicrock.com]

Damn! Maybe I need to be a drum tech and forget about medical school......

Elmo your in luck, Joey's drum tech John Douglas is now looking for his own drum tech since he cannot do both. And who knows, if John f**ks up, you may be their next drummer...smoking smiley

Where do I get my application? I've watched Charlie (and Joey) for years!

When you listen to Aerosmith these days...I mean if he's not fit enough to play, quality wise, he must be a total disaster. Just listen to Steven and Perry, they are horrible now.

I wonder if John Douglas is any relation to Jack Douglas...who produced Aerosmith's run of classic albums in the 70s?

He also produced their most recent album, if memory serves.

Drum tech : John Douglas.
Tom Hamilton was replaced by David Hull (former The Joe Perry Project bass player).

Who's the drum tech? I know Aerosmith has been doing the Vegas residency, has Joey not played at all during this time?
I remember when I saw Aerosmith around 2010ish in Vancouver, Tom Hamilton was unable to play so they had a replacement fill in, not sure who it was. I believe that tour had Joan Jett opening.

Kicking him out of the band is one thing...if he sux, he sux...bye-bye.

Telling him to pay for his replacement is a whole other ball of wax.

I'd probably accept the former and go chill out on my big bed of money that I'll never outlive....

I would definitely fight the latter...so would any other "rational" person.

it's pure greed by Perry/Tyler & whomever else to ask him to pay for the drummer....just find a drummer and pay him as a "hired hand"...

give me a break...is it really gonna break the bank?

If so, Tyler can go embarrass himself on American Idol or do a stupid country album and make money that way....what a tool.

so lame.

I loved Aerosmith in high school, but tuned out when they got into the whole "AmazinCrazyCryin" crap-fest.

So to be clear, you're in a band and you're not doing the things you need to do to recover from apparently two separate injuries. Your bandmates should keep you on indefinitely and if you need your tech as a stand-in, everyone should pay equally for the cost?

I see your point.

I guess it all comes down to what the contract he signed says

the liars will all get rich....I mean "lawyers"...no, wait....

I wonder if Mr Kramer already got paid for his part of the Vegas residency? That might explain a few things to some extent at least.

If he has to pay for his replacement, then he should keep his share of what they earn, or it is double punishment.

They say that they didn't have enough time to rehearse with him to do the songs justice for their fans. WTF? With click tracks and warhorses for a TV show everything they are playing (maybe 4 songs) they have played hundreds of times. Its not like they are doing new material. Charlie and the Stones could sit down and play JJF, Brown Sugar, Gimme Shelter and Satisfaction in their sleep without extensive rehearsals.

I don’t think much of him as a drummer anyways.

Neither does Steven Tyler, who started as a drummer and has natural rhythm. I saw them play with their drum tech last summer in Atlantic City. If Kramer can no longer play as good as that guy, it's definitely a sad ending. Aerosmith were quite good, but show was only about an hour and 40 mins..

Maybe this is really the case, maybe due to some contract he really gets paid for the gigs he doesn't perform. Otherwise I can't see how would anyone make him to pay his replacement, who would normally recieve his share from each gig. No need to pay any extra money.

The thing is, that the article obviously makes a sensation from some limited information. The situation surely sounds wierd, but makes no sense really. I bet it is not the whole picture, some important parts are missing and so it makes no sense to make any conclusions.

Anyway, I remember taht in his bio Steven writes how he had to teach Joey some drum parts, how he was generally often not satisfied with him as a drummer. I remember that when I saw them in 2017 in Berlin, during Dream On Steven got obviously quite angry with Joey and shouted "Listen to me!" at him from the b-stage towards the main stage, making gestures, as if showing him the rhythm. I personally like Aerosmith a lot, but I think Joey as a drummer is quite mediocre at best.

Seriously? Try three weeks minimum and at least the first show is still pretty rough at times...and it's not like they're doing new material, either.

add to that its sounding like joey hasn't played drums, at least with the band, in 6 months minimum due to an injury so his chops are shot to heck . it may be 8 months since he last picked up sticks. trust me as a drummer if he literally has done pretty much nothing in 8 months it would take him 4 weeks to get ready

They weren't... exactly. But there's one other aspect of it - Aerosmith had better songs with better videos than the Stones.

PUMP came out in 1989. All but 2 of the 5 singles were in 1989.

GET A GRIP came out in 1993. All but 2 of its 7 singles came out in 1994.

Their Love In An Elevator style single Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees) and should've been a B-side single Pink came out in 1997.

3 of their videos for GET A GRIP consisted of a couple of things: a really hot chick named Alicia Silverstone (as well as Liv Tyler in one) in all 3 of the power ballads that were essentially the same song.

Never a big fan, but feel badly for Kramer, although it seems it may be a combination of not being physically or mentally/emotionally able to step up for the gigs. To have security at the gates to ban him from rehearsals, with paparazzi on hand to film the encounter is humiliating at best.

Worked a part time security gig in Seattle when they played here in the early nineties, ended up being assigned to their dressing room door for the afternoon/evening. Became a bigger fan of Tyler as he took a liking to me for some reason, joking with me all day and was genuinely very cool (got invited in for food and to watch porn.. strange night/funny story cool smiley) Even then one of the many takeaways from the experience for me was what a prima donna Kramer seemed. Literally carried backstage after the gig as one example that turned my head.

Aerosmith says they won't be talking about it anymore in the press as it is a "family issue". With family like that...
What a mess.
