Wouldn't say they peaked in the early seventies, but don't believe there was a better time for the J Geils Band after perhaps the mid-seventies.

They achieved more commercial success in the early eighties with Centerfold etc., but as a band they peaked years earlier..
Second best live band I've ever seen cool smiley

..and they opened for the Stones back in 1982, just after their success with 'Centerfold'. The Stones had to take care...

Free were one of the greatest of the UK blues based bands Terry. Maybe you just heard All Right Now and a few other things.
The album that turned me on to them, Highway, was far wider reaching than the cock rock you speak of.
Here's one that you might like. It's almost country rock -

Kinks had a great resurgence in the late 70's, early 80's

Yep. They kinda had three peaks, though: In the mid/late 60s, in the early 70s (with Lola, but then followed by a significant dip in popularity) and the most commercial prosperous one in the late 70s/early 80s.

After that a lots of bands from the 60's broke up a new generation of bands appeared.

Many of them were fantastic but, as usual, it's hard to stay on top level over time.

Wishbone Ash are another example.

Despite all the well known groups being mentioned and me being Scottish -The Sensational Alex Harvey Band were not a bad live band.
