Actress in 'Andy Griffith' series mugged in N.C. town that inspired 'Mayberry'
02:48

Betty Lynn, who played Thelma Lou on "The Andy Griffith Show," pauses at a statue of Andy and Opie Taylor in Mount Airy, N.C., in 2007.

An elderly actress from the Andy Griffith Show who moved to North Carolina's real-life model for Mayberry to escape crime in Los Angeles had her wallet stolen in a daylight mugging last weekend, the Mount Airy News reports.

Andy Griffith, from left, Don Knotts and Ronny Howard in "The Andy Griffith Show."

Betty Lou Lynn, 83, played the character Thelma Lou, the girlfriend of Deputy Barney Fife, in the long-running series.

Lynn, who was born in Kansas and lived for decades in Los Angeles, moved in 2007 to Mount Airy, the birthplace of Andy Griffith and the inspiration for the fictional Mayberry.

A police report says a man grabbed Lynn's wallet containing $130 from her hands at a shopping center Sunday afternoon, the newspaper reports.

The alleged culprit was caught not long after under a bridge, the report says, and at least $43 was recovered.

In 2008, Lynn told the News that she decided to move to Mount Airy after being robbed three times in L.A.

The last straw, she said, came after the second break-in of her home while she was visiting Mount Airy for the annual Mayberry Days celebration. This year's festivities, which happen in late September, mark the 50th anniversary of the TV show.

I believe they caught the feller that did it. He jumped into the river. She got back most of her money but it was wet.

I think the Coen brothers modeled the three main characters in O Brother Where Art Thou on Ernest T. Bass.

Nice job, swiss!

Is this the only thread on the first page that is remotely about the Stones?

Andy would lock up Keef, then go get local guitar wizard Jim Lindsey, and make him come in and play for Keef. Keef would hire Jim on the spot to go on tour with the Stones. Keef would wind up as a very good friend of Andy and Barney, and from then on, everytime the Stones were playing Mayberry, Keef would visit Andy on his porch and enjoy some of Aunt Bea's pie. (mmmm, mmmm, pie!)

Thanks, Elmo Lewis smiling smiley It was fun to make. I was on a campaign last night to move as many ON-topic posts up the queue as possible.

A close real life experience to that would be when George Harrison visited his sister in Benton, Illinois before the Beatles hit America. The book below relates the visit and a lot of locals thought George had real long hair!
