OT: David Lee Roth kicks off Las Vegas residency

I'm just posting these clips to remind my fellow Stones fans how lucky we are to have Mick Jagger in our lives:

You Really Got Me (live)

Unchained (live)

Dance The Night Away (live)

And yeah, I know Dave was never a great singer, especially live, but goddamn if he wasn't entertaining. This is just horrible...no self-awareness.

Aw come on guys. Leave Diamond Dave alone. He's got bills to pay just like everyone else.

Well he clearly forgot to pay his vocal coaching bill!

Watching these makes me realize DLR puts it to a lie, Neil Young's line, "Hey hey my my, rock and roll will never die". Sad, just really sad.

keef: Yes, entertaining, and we were spoiled. Stuff like this will never happen again.

This is absolutely pathetic and not surprising at all. The only time he ever tried to actually sing again was the 2007 reunion. After that, he milked this for all it was worth.

I'm sorry people are so stupid that they actually pay for this. I judge him but I judge them too. A lot.

Ouch,
that was bad...he doesn´t even move, his
timing is bad and he sings like me.

What´s really missing in this disaster
is the torn crotch of his trousers while jumping.

Maybe he should join the Village People.

His biggest problem is he tries to sing songs in a higher key. Just stick to singing them like on the albums. Dance The Night Away is one of my favourite VH songs but the way he sings the opening verse just sucks. Has been this way the past few VH tours too.

What happened to him? He's a fair bit younger than 'our' Stones, no?

Yeah, he's "only" 65.

I don't think it's anything more complicated than not taking care of his voice. He's a cigarette smoker and thinks it gives his voice "character" rather than destroying his upper register.

DLR sounds worse than a busted chainsaw outside your bedroom window at 3 AM.

Aw c'mon guys. He obviously was having some minor vocal problems from that ultra dry desert air plus "the nerves of first night". I'm sure he'll settle in after a few more shows and the right throat medication. And don't forget the IORR mantra: "you can't really tell anything from a YouTube clip, you really have to be there". I tell ya, If I'm in Vegas and I'm blasted and Diamond Dave's performing I'll definitely throw down my $20.

I love DLR. His interviews and podcasts are supremely entertaining...he's a fascinating eccentric.

I actually think he could make new music with his voice as it currently is...I've heard him sing the blues on some unreleased material and it's great. He's got a deep, smoky character to his voice.

But as far as being Diamond Dave onstage and singing Van Halen songs? That ship has long sailed.

he's still the best frontman VH had.

the other two (was it three?) were so lame...even in their prime.

DLR was certainly better than Sammy Hagar. I actually thought the third man (I forget his name) wasn't all bad as a singer though (on the underrated III album he reminded me of Paul Stanley now and again).

But these clips sound awful, it's as if he doesn't take the songs seriously one bit (especially the VH songs). He can do better (even today) but he doesn't seem to want to.

Sammy has a great voice and still sounds pretty great at 72 years old, but his lyrics are rather generic and he's average as a frontman.

DLR wrote extremely clever lyrics on those early VH albums, and his voice, while an acquired taste even back in the day, gave the band a unique quality rather than just being another Robert Plant clone, as was popular for hard rock bands in the late '70s.

Trashing this abysmal performance doesn't mean he wasn't great back in the day...it's just sad to see now. As far as not caring or not taking it seriously, that seems to be the case, which is odd, because in interviews, he takes a lot of pride in his career.
