How 'Bond 007' are Stones tunes?
Posted by: peoplewitheyes ()

There has been talk on and off through the decades about the Stones doing a Bond theme, but I'm having trouble seeing how they could make a appropriate song. For me the best Bond tunes have mystery, sweeping choruses, some melancholy, some menace. I'm hard pressed to think of any 'recent' (last 30 years) tunes that could even slightly fit that setting. Perhaps Continental Drift?

I think Goats Head Soup might be the closest - with perhaps Can You Hear the Music or Winter being at least sonically appropriate.

What do you think? Can (or even, could) the Stones make a Bond-ish tune?

Nope

If we're talking about ancient rockers doing a Bond theme, I think The Who would be way more appropriate!

(although, with an eye on profit and publicity as always, it'll probably be Ed Sheerhan)

Title 5 would have been cool.

No.

As far as I know, only "Goldeneye" was even offered to them. They wisely turned it down.

Actually, I think Live and Let Die is amongst the very best of Paulie's lost Beatles work.
If Mick wrote for Alfie...then why not? Doesnt need Keith to come on board. He could do a cameo role instead.

I agree that LALD is a fantastic Bond tune, but it has more chords that probably the whole of Black and Blue, and has a sweeping majesty that is (in my humble..) beyond the Stones capacities, certainly in these recent decades

None the less a considerable number of Stones classics (and lesser known ones) are popping up as part of movie soundtracks. Not lead titles or original scores of course.
I suspect ABKCO are a very good Publisher when it comes to utilising their 'crown jewels' .

Maybe the Bond flick where Bond, despite his work for Her Majesty, is, due to tax considerations, forced to live outside of England for the bulk of the year?

I think they should do it. The trademarks of Bond tunes has always been that “Goldeneye DA DAAAA” thing. That could easily be a Keef open G thing, and the title No Time To Die fits the Stones too. Do a mid tempo rocker and add horns and strings. It’s probably the closest we’ll ever get to the EOMS sound nowadays too.

I think "Rock And A Hard Place" and to a lesser extent "Undercover Of The Night" have the type of "Goldfinger" sound that is close to the usual Bond tune template. "Dangerous Beauty" could have also been worked into an acceptable Bond track, I believe.

I think the Stones could and should do it. It would be great publicity. As JumpingKentFlash said above, just make it horn and string heavy. Certainly there are many producers out there who can replicate the sound of the usual Bond song without too much difficulty.

Fingerprint File seems to be spyish. But maybe it's more Government corruption oriented.

Look at Alice Cooper. They wrote Man With The Golden Gun on the Muscle of Love album thinking that the Bond producers would have to use it for their movie but they didn't! Still a good song, though.

Live and Let Die is amazing in concert, so much pyro and smoke.

If Chris Cornell could do a song like "You know my name" for Casino Royale, the Stones can definitely do a Bond song.

Yes treacle it gets crazier when
Anal Lee the Asian spy with small breasts
and filed teeth turns up and bites thru the
cable James is dangling from.....as he begins to fall
she giggles and starts reciting the chorus of England Lost …

But James ever the gentleman straightens his
bow-tie and calls back to her …. AAAAAAAAAre you okay??? ….

Undercover of the Night's style I think would have/would work as a Bond tune.

Aren't Bond songs written for the movie(s) as opposed to just being some song that might fit? That's always been the perception, for me anyway.

The Bond film people have probably wisely not approached the Stones because it would take them never get it done long for any movie, especially now.

Bond songs are commissioned / written for the movies, yes. For everyone interested there's a great book out there with detailed info of every Bond movie title song and score (including the unofficial movies). The book is called "The Music of James Bond" by Jon Burlingame. Highly recommended!

EXACTLY. so it's not a case of picking an existing song and wondering whether it would work as a bond theme. it's more a matter of: could the stones -- as writers and performers - create something with the necessary bombast, drama, and tunefulness to function as the opening of a bond film? i for one have no idea ...

We already know that they can't do that.lol

But we still pick some songs.
Btw. Doom and Gloom could work as well, even if not the title theme.

"Ruthless People" could have worked better than anything else. A bit of John Barry would have helped it limp along. There's a bit at a press conference in the nineties where Mick and Keith laugh about being asked to write "Goldeneye."
