Stones, Twins - Genius?
Date: November 30, 2019 07:40

Stones have always been my top band. Way more than that, actually. I got guidance, style, bad habits, and tons of great music from them. The albums are legendary; especially the Big 5. And so many of their songs are cornerstones of rock lore.

Yet, I don't know if I'd call Mick and Keith genius. What do you guys think.

Brian Wilson is a genius but still produced tons of absolute dreck. I don't think of Mick and Keith as geniuses, but they certainly had flashes of brilliance.

Definitely agree z, trying hard to think of any other Rock musician / player / writer more worthy of the accolade of being considered genius in the last 50+ years. The albums are all the proof you need, that sound he creates, if it's not musical genius then i don't know what is.

Geniuses? Absolutely not. Excellent pop/rock writers, but not geniuses.
Among musicans, one could say Liszt, Schubert and some others were geniuses, but claiming that the glimmer twins were "genius".....then you have set the bar for being a "genius" in an unworthy place, I'd say. Then every fan of any band could say "Bob Marley was a genius", or U2 or Led Zeppelin or whatever. Just because Rolling Stones is my favourite "R&R band" I'd never call them genius - nowhere near.

I could have said that. Absolutely.

But geniuses? No way.

Not even great musicians. There is something different about them.
But flashes of brilliance for shure. And quite a few of them.

they are geniuses at what they do....no question about that.

but, flat out "geniuses"...I dunno....if Mozart is classified as a "genius," it's hard to put very many other people in that category.

it's a term that is used way too lightly these days anyway.

Alma Deustcher (spell) seems to fit in that category, IMO.

Prince was up there, if we're talking modern (popular) musicians...again, IMO.

Stones definitely RULE, either way.

The sum of the parts equals brilliant rock and roll. They are the perfect storm of rock music: the time, the place, the individual talent, musical compatibility, it all worked. But geniuses? No way.

The word brilliant was really overused in this thread as expected.

The only rock artist I consider a genius is Bob Dylan.
Rock doesn't require genius.

Masters yes, but genius? No.

This guys a genius, though his choice of guitar here is questionable. winking smiley

Agree with that - although I would also agree with Rocky Dijon that Brian Wilson was/ is a genius (even though he did produce some questionable stuff as well - as has Dylan of course!), but his talent for arranging, producing, composing and putting harmonies together is, I think, without equal in pop/ rock.

I would call them Masters of Music.
I always found that people who were called genius had something else that was quite the opposite. People like Mozart and Brian Wilson were mentioned here ... just read their "history". In that latter sence Brian Jones could maybe be called a genius ...
No, Masters is fine with me. Long(er) live our two masters! It's about time they prove it once again with a new album (I am worried that our two masters have become to much of perfectionists and can't find the moment to say "this is it" ... put it out!).

Never met one ….but whats a genius anyway ??….

Over the years met dudes who are clever at one thing but
then on the other hand cant even heat up a can of tomato soup …

Mick & Keith … well yeah some kinda magic comes
from when those Glimmers mesh … some amazing stuff
while turmoil and madness swirls through that Stones camp ……

Tony Asher (who wrote the lyrics for Pet Sounds) apparently once said of Brian Wilson - "Genius musician, amateur human being" ! Brian himself once said. "I'm not a genius I'm just a hard working guy" .

I got tons of great music from them BUT I always refused to be influenced by the other aspects of their life :I hardly ever smoked, I never took drugs, and I never slept with underage girls (hi Bill hi Mick!) grinning smiley
I sometimes stumbled into some Keef wannabe's (JD bottle in one hand, Marlboro Reds in the other) and frankly they were pitiful.

No, certainly not.
Also the sum of the parts (ie the group) is always greater than the individual.

Because of his versatility, yes.

Perhaps "Genius" can be assigned to Andrew Loog Oldham for insisting they write their own music?

Keith was gifted musically. Mick's talent was being able to work with that.
All of them were bright boys coming up in a post-war system that was trying to give them educational opportunities.
Keith didn't really have a handle on his gift in a way that would elevate that to genius. Bob Dylan did, as somebody mentioned here earlier. Brian Wilson, maybe, but had a mental illness that blocked him.

Plato,Socrates,Einstein, and Telsa were genius. Einstein's worm hole universe and teleporting . Keith always says he gets his songs from heavens that's about as close as he gets to genius.LOL
