Anyone notice the harmonica playing bits and pieces of the Godfather theme?

Is this a great movie just because you've been told it is???????????

Are you against this movie just because it's been praised by a lot of people ???????????

Not against this film I just don't believe the hype. You say this film is praised by a lot of people people well it has also received a lot of negative reviews. Just saying

I kept expecting a great Stones tune to blare out at any moment but it never did...

Good thing. The compulsory Scorcese+Stones thing was getting predictable, and boring.
- "Dude when do we get to hear "GS" or "CYHMK"?"
- "Shut up!"

actually..not a good thing....and that's the point...it (the movie) never takes off...and thats the sense of predictability in a Scorsese film you want....its just an ok movie.

Not for me. I think the use of stones' songs was wonderful in "Good Fellas", good in "Casino". It started to feel old and stale in "The Departed" (imho).

My wife and I watched it last night and absolutely loved it.

GREAT job on every part of the production, one of the better movies I've seen in awhile.

I give credit to Scorsese for not repeating himself. While the subject matter is not uncharted territory, the themes it deals with are a lot different that what I've seen from him before. It's pretty heavy.

Yes.

Going to watch this tonight and looking forward to it.
Two weeks ago I watched the Joker and that was one of the best films I’ve ever seen.

Just read the score was composed by Robbie Robertson.

Yes.

The more I think about it, this movie is more akin to Raging Bull than it is Goodfellas.

Not a bad thing by any means.

Oh my my that make up used for the trio confused smiley

It could have worked fine some twenty years ago or so, but c'mon now it's pathetic in the best case.
Even the brutal scene of De Niro kickin' the guy in front of his daughter look lame.
It simply ruin the whole movie. Dommage !

I just started watching it...I've gotta say, the de-aging technology is quite distracting so far, and watching De Niro attempt to physically stand and move like a younger man when he's 75 in actuality is not very convincing.

But technical issues aside, it's very intriguing so far.

Well I agree with Mathijs, it's noway near Goodfellas or Casino.

...

Watched it yesterday, agree, not bad but does not compare to Goodfellas!

I still have never seen Casino, I guess I need to watch that one.
Casino beats both Goodfellas and The Irishman. It has Sharon Stone's best ever performance. Joe Pesci is great in The Irishman
Casino is wildly entertaining, but it's so over-the-top that it almost plays as a parody of gangster films.

Goodfellas is perfection.

Scorcese, DeNiro, Pacino -- these are all men in their 70s, still making a gangster film. A good one, I'm sure, but I'm getting to the point where I want to see what younger men can create and see other viewpoints and experiences up there on the screen.
Just as the Stones and other bands have unwittingly crowded out younger rock bands, I feel some of these older moviemakers have done the same.

It's a movie about old guys, reflecting from an old-guys perspective. Nothing wrong with that IMHO.

Three and a half hours long and not a minute wasted.
Yes this was pretty much how I saw it too. I knew going in it would be long. But seeing well known veterans working together again is fun. While you see this movie there are lots of references and reminders of great old films and performances.

Hello,

I think when you talk about Pacino, Pesci, De Niro, Keitel, all together and directed by Scorsese you generate very high expectations, but the movie its ok, nothing to compare with Goodfellas or Casino, it is just and OK movie.

There was a De Niro/Pacino movie some time back that had high expectations (forget the title), but it turned out to be crap.
Holding out hope this one will be better, but reading the mixed reviews isn't helping - will try and keep an open mind.

Righteous Kill...that was a pretty horrible movie. They should have been embarrassed agreeing to star in that.

Of course, we'll always have Michael Mann's fantastic Heat:

Goodfellas - Absolute brilliance until the drug stuff during the last 1/3 of the movie. About 30 minutes too long.
Casino - Very entertaining, despite being a Goodfellas knockoff.
The Departed - Highly overrated. Forced performances. The rat at the end was comically bad and cheesey (see what I did there?)

While both are great, I enjoyed Casino over Goodfellas.

I’ve watched it a couple times - I think it's terrific but I do have a question: anyone have a theory as to why Pesci takes DeNiro’s glasses before he gets on the plane?

Watched it last night. It was good to see Pesci but about half way thru I gave up. Something about it just wasn't captivating. Went back to watching the final episodes of Vikings. smileys with beer

I like Pacino but I think he was miscast as Jimmy Hoffa.

Now he's also creepy Todd from El Camino. Poor guy, I don't think he'll ever not seem creepy to me now.
