Well I agree with Mathijs, it's noway near Goodfellas or Casino.

...

Watched it yesterday, agree, not bad but does not compare to Goodfellas!

I still have never seen Casino, I guess I need to watch that one.

Yes you do... Probably Marty's best work (ah those final 5 minutes cued to the "Contempt" soundtrack) along with the hugely under-rated "Cape Fear".

Obligatory for Stones fans. The usual crew + folks like James Woods and Don Rickles. Great stuff. I saw it a few times in theaters, but when I watched it again a few months ago, I felt it could have done with some editing, esp. many of the increasingly annoying Sharon Stone scenes.

Incredible piece of work ....
Heck most guys that are Marty's age couldn't
even build a sand-castle if they went to a beach with a steam-shovel...

Leo, you got to watch 'Casino'. Now that is how it's done.
And Sharon is breath taking through out the film.

Watched it tonight, not Scorsese's best ever but still amazing character studies, and some brilliant acting. Could have used some tighter editing, though.

Casino beats both Goodfellas and The Irishman. It has Sharon Stone's best ever performance. Joe Pesci is great in The Irishman

Agreed I liked Pesci the best. Love Marty’s cinematography as always

Is this a great movie just because you've been told it is???????????

Re: OT: The Irishman

meh....no way near Scorsese's best...while the cast was very interesting and the 3 main characters at times riveting...the entire movie at 3 and a half hours was way too long...the Robertson soundtrack was boring....I kept expecting a great Stones tune to blare out at any moment but it never did...just like the movie never really went anywhere/took off....I'd see it again maybe...maybe.... on a sick day....but I expected more.....the hype was way overblown.

Are you against this movie just because it's been praised by a lot of people ???????????

I enjoyed the movie. Great sets, costumes, and many strong acting performances. Besides the Big 3 of DeNiro, Pacino and Pesci, Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano, and the actors portraying Crazy Joe Gallo, Fat Tony Salerno, Jimmy Hoffa's foster son Chuckie O'Brien, Tony "Pro" Provenzano and Sal "Sally Bugs" Brigoglio all gave studied, credible performances. For me, however, the key relationship portrayed was between DeNiro's lead character and his daughter Peggy, played by Anna Paquin, who rejects her father's lifestyle and warped code of ethics. The movie plays as a cautionary tale on the collateral damage caused by unwise choices.

I also was expecting a Stones song, but this really wasn't a Rock & Roll movie, more like a crooner era and accordion folk songs epic. It gives plausible accounts of the assassinations of Hoffa and Joey Gallo as well as JFK. As the major players in these events have all died, it's well past time that the FBI releases the unredacted files for these cases.

I watched it last night, between nods on and off. It has the feel of a tv movie. I certainly wouldn't call it better than Good Fellas, but I need to see it through again. At this point, I'll call a good to very good movie, in between.

Madonna confused smiley or ex-porn star Traci Lords (!?) were considered for the part though... So S. Stone might have been the "better" choice after all.

Scorcese, DeNiro, Pacino -- these are all men in their 70s, still making a gangster film. A good one, I'm sure, but I'm getting to the point where I want to see what younger men can create and see other viewpoints and experiences up there on the screen.
Just as the Stones and other bands have unwittingly crowded out younger rock bands, I feel some of these older moviemakers have done the same.

Good thing. The compulsory Scorcese+Stones thing was getting predictable, and boring.

It's a movie about old guys, reflecting from an old-guys perspective. Nothing wrong with that IMHO.

Three and a half hours long and not a minute wasted.

what younger rock bands? i try to keep up but its getting harder to find new & interesting stuff. its a bad period for rock. we need a great young band that can shake up the status quo like nirvana did. it ain't greta van fleet, IMO!

CR, there are so many very, very good bands, great music being made today. Maybe this thread is not the place to go into detail.
(And no, not that little group you mentioned in last sentence)

As far as Rock groups with people still in their 20s, you should check out the Australian band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and the San Francisco band The Oh Sees. Both have put out several excellent albums.

I give credit to Scorsese for not repeating himself. While the subject matter is not uncharted territory, the themes it deals with are a lot different that what I've seen from him before. It's pretty heavy.

Oh please, for god sake.

I like King Gizzard but I don't see bands like the Stones keeping them down which was sort of the original issue. I don't think their music is going to catch on in a huge way. Haven't heard Oh Sees yet. Thanks. Sorry to get this off track.

I'm old enough to have seen the big acts when they were still relevant such as the Stones in 1978, Led Zep in 1977, the Who in 1980, Pink Floyd in 1980. & worked in music distribution for over 25 years (what's that?). I was at the center of ground zero for the grunge years in Seattle. I think the main problem in the states at least is that hip hop has taken over with the kids. Much harder for young bands to get ahead. Anyway sorry to get thread off track.

The notion of a “Rock” band is kind of reductive and irrelevant now... but new and exciting music is everywhere.
