It was in 1970, when I spent a visit to the Elektrola Musikhaus on the posh Kurfürstendamm here in Berlin, where they still had those booths in which they played the records for you. I had asked for the new Stones live lp ( having heard of yayas), but what the assistant played to me was Liver than... I was really surprised, being 17 I didn't know that bootlegs existed. And although I thought that the sound was pretty lousy I purchased the record. It was the Peace version with the black snake stamped cover which I still have.

Bedspring Symphony and Nicaraguan Benefit concert bought at Record Head in West Allis, WI 1976. I was blown away by these two bootlegs and continued on till the late 80's. Had over 300 boots at one tome, Sold most of them in the 90's as I switched to CD and then digital. Big mistake.

so you listened to a concert that took place in the future ??? :-)

i was there in 1981 and i heard "tattoo you", they did play the songs loud over
speakers - "worried about you", "slave", "waiting on a friend", and i thought -
how can this be - i already knew these songs from bootlegs ...

sorry - liver is 1969, i thought you meant live in leeds 71 :-)

Live'r Than You Will Ever Be for me as well, showed up in Village Music, Mill Valley, about three weeks after I saw them in Oakland. I was blown away.

Biggest impact on me though had to be Out On Bail, Bedspring Symphony, and that Sonic Barbeque set. And Welcome to New York too. Some great stuff back then.

Looking through this thread is bringing back memories.

My first bootleg via mail order was the 3LP set Red White and Blue vinyl from the 75 tour from LA. I received it in early 1977.
Great audience quality , one of the best audience recordings in my opinion, although at first listen in 1977, based on ya yas quality as the only real live recording available at the time, I was initially disappointed.
I soon followed with Esson 70, LA 72, Brussels 73, LA 73, MSG 72, Gravestones and Rape of Vaults and on and on and on

Welcome to New York. Summer 1974 in my hometown of Sacramento. I think the store was called the Record Exchange and it was on the K street mall downtown. Legendary Sacramento musician, entertainment journalist and disc jockey Mick Martin sold it to me. I think I was inquiring about Stones albums and he put it on in the store. I'd never heard of bootlegs before. That got me going.

“Charlie Watts and his fabulous Rolling Stones” - I must have purchased it around 1976 or 77.

Some of the early boots had great covers or titles.
Like Welcome to New York, Stars in the sky, etc.

Others of course looked very cheap.
I bought Baton Rouge 75 in just a white sleeve.
I was very excited cause it was the first musical source since Ronnie had joined the Stones. The 2 records were very expensive. But the sound was terrible.
Like recorded from a toilet outside the arena.

Unfortunately some of the bad ones had nice covers.

In the 70's/80's boots were a great mystery.
No internet - and you didn't know where to find them and where they came from.

So I remember it was a great experience when in 87 The R. Stones Blackbook by D. Hoffman was released. A wonderful overview of all known boots with pics of albums and covers. Many records I'd never heard about then.
What a great read it was.

I remember the Record Exchange in Sacto, I usually bought my boots locally at Markee Records on 10th street from Keith and Donnie, Dennis Newhall and Mick Martin were regulars there and I struck up a friendship with Keith and Dennis especially. Great times in a little hole in the wall...got on to Nick Lowe there as well, later on. I don't think MarKee and Record Exchange were in existance at the same time though, I think Markee came later.

Bedspring Symphony bought as a cassette in Camden Market in the '80s (incorrectly labelled as Munich '73).

this one, a real silver cd... being bought "just" three years after attending their show in my country. each time i played it, i re-lived my one and only live concert experience of the mighty Stoneses

I started collecting Stones boots around 79/80. There's a church in Harvard Square (Cambridge, MA, USA) that used to host a Saturday morning craft/flea market. One guy sold records exclusively at his table and he always had a ton of bootlegs. I think some I my first were:
