OT Hank Williams

I am interested in Hank Williams and I have few questions.

I love his music and I hear few things about his life (what a hell for a such a wonderful music).

Which is the best Hank biography book ?

Do you known if all his recordings are available on CD ? I only have the 3 CD set called Hank Williams the Anthology (I am French and bought it in France).

How about a visit to Montgomery ?
Is it worth to visit the Hank Williams Museum ?

Thank you for your help.

I think the best you can get is The Complete Hank Williams box set. A fantastic 10 CD set released in 2000. An absolute gem for every fan.

Sold out everywhere but you can find a copy on eBay from time to time. This is a really good offer:

I bought the box on the day it was released.

Hank Williams -- Lost Concerts

Both shows from 1952 but a good insight
into how he performed …. of course the hits
like Lovesick … Cold Cold and Hey Good Lookin
are there but then in the middle of the show
he switches from clowning around into something tear soaked like The Funeral ….. STUNNING

Dear Django and Rockman,

A warm thank you for you both.
I will have everything on Hank Williams, and this is very great.

I had read a summary of his biography when I was a teenager, I was very impressed (but not very interested in his music at that time).

Now I really love his music. I understand why he is considered a reference (and more then that) in country music.

I recently found an interview (dated 2003) of Hank's chauffeur about the night he died :

Probably you already know this. Since the beer cans found in his car were Falstaff beer I have bought on ebay a vintage Falstaff beer bottle opener.

Just to think of him when opening a beer...

Anyway, thank you again and I hope to see you next tour (the Stones of course).

I might be wrong but aren't some of the timelife releases just the mothers best shows broken down?

Hank Williams is the blues. The songs may sound country, but as a black friend of mine put it, "Hank Williams is white man's blues. His songs are full of blues themes and soul." I have always felt the same. A large number of his songs are part of my ongoing listening. Here's a couple of links I came across recently regarding Hank. If they've been previously posted, please excuse the duplication.

Well yes the two 3CD sets are a break-down of Mothers Best shows
…. On a rough count The Unreleased Recordings & Revealed
gather together about 90 of the Hank Mothers Best performances …..

Where as the 15 CD has the seventy two MB shows with Hank
performing two songs per show making it around 140 Hank performances....

If near Montgomery the gravesite is definitely worth visiting.

The museum is ok, the highlight being the car he died in on loan from Hank Jr. No pictures though unless you give a sizeable donation.

If there go eat at the Capital Oyster Bar. Looks like a dump outside but has great food, and a fun place to hang out.

If you want to know more about Hank Williams get the 'Hank Williams - Honky Tonk Blues' on DVD by American Masters. It's on YouTube here in the States.

Old Hank is fantastic... but you already know that of course.

I would like to make a road trip to the US to follow Hank's path... to visit the places he has been to, to visit the places he played, to go out honky tonkin', to visit the Grand Ole Opry (despite it has moved), Montgomery, etc.

Probably for the next Stones tour in the US ? But the way, I was in Washington and Foxborough shows this year.

Cool, lemme know what you think of it. I discovered David Allan Coe via an album he did with...Pantera (both him and them are from Texas)...and have enjoyed exploring his entire discography (it's pretty extensive); if you want to hear my favourite D.A.C. song, check out Piece of Wood and Steel (a song about his guitar): [www.youtube.com]
Guy is 80 years old and still out there playing shows...Passes un bon dimanche!

You can still tour The Ryman Auditorium, the original Grand Old Opry, in fact they have regular touring acts there.
