JUst read an article on the late Gary Holton, for those that dont know, he played cockney wayne in aufweidersehen pet in britain from 1983 to 1985 when he died of a drugs overdose at the age of 33.

But he was also in a band called the heavy metal kids from 1972 to 1985 on and off, he was in another band with a friend from norway and lived for a while in trondhiem, and was also fronting the damned for a short time.

he was in various films including quadrophenia, was a friend of ronnie wood, and hung out with him for a while doing drink and drugs, they also looked alike.

i remember gary holton well for his part in AWP, and knew he had been in a band but didnt realize all the other stuff, like being in the damned and knowing ronnie, seems he was quite a character,

has anyone read the article and were they aware of his musical and acting connections, seems he was a very talented guy, who libed life in the fast lane.

AWP was a classic tv prog, garys character wayne was great.

Great show AWP was. Wayne was a great character. Remember an episode that he had his cereal with special brew

The Heavy Metal Kids were a superb band ...tripped up a bit by being a rock band as Punk came to the fore in the late 70s.

Gaz Holton was a superb front man, with a beguiling "artful dodger/cheeky chappie" persona . [ He actually played the Artful Dodger in Oliver as a kid.]

The three albums they made , Heavy Metal Kids, Anvil Chorus and Kitsch are all worth checking out if you come across them.

Hello,

Not forgetting the episode of AWP where Wayne (GH) takes Barry out in Dusseldorf i the hope of attracting some female company: at one point Wayne says that he sometimes gets mistaken for Ronnie Wood, and is happy to act the part!

One of the finest British TV shows...

Cheers,

Simon.

ive heard good reviews of heavy metal kids, just wonder how they never really made it that big, cos when i first watched aufweidersehen pet i hadnt a clue who he was.

and yes ronnie did the artwork for one of his albums.

It's all up there on Apple Music. A veritable treasure trove. Nice biogs too.

AWP was my fave TV show EVER !
What a great bunch of characters, each one a star in their own right. I remember standing shoulder to shoulder with Tim Healy at Cheltenham races for about 20 minutes, thinking, this fella looks like Tim, but it cant possibly be him, but it was ! smiling smiley
