Earliest group photo
Posted by: masoudi ()

Hi all I’m busy reading the latest Mojo Stones collector series 62-69. There is a photo of the group from April 14 1963 at Ken Colyers club which I had never seen before. A brilliant picture. Is that the earliest group picture. There is the Mick J one from May 1962 with him fronting Blues Incorporated. I believe I’ve seen some Marquee ones of Brian and or Keith but not a group one. Would love to hear from anyone who can post some of the earliest group shots and conformation of what is believed to be the earliest one. Perhaps the ones taken by Phillip Townsend outside Edith Grove? Cheers Brendon from NZ

Thanks Rockman. Where is that article from? It also says these photographs? I have only seen the one in Mojo. Can you point me in the direction to find the others?

Cheers Brendon

The earliest newspaper article to feature photographs.
They were taken at the Station Hotel on April 7, 1963.

Charlie didn't play with the Stones until mid January 1963 so any photo featuring him can not be 1962.

Yep - Charlie played his first gig with the Rolling Stones on 12 January 1963 in London, Ealing Jazz Club. And Bill Wyman joined in on 7 December 1962.

This should be one of them:

Is the 3rd picture the one that prompted the "one of them looks like he has a feather duster on his head" remark?

There is a photo taken in December 1962 with Brian, Keith, Mick and ... Bill. It appeared on the Stones App a couple of years ago. So basically one step before the perfect team.

For me these by Townsend are easily the best of the early photos.

As this is a thread about EARLIEST images, it's worth noting that in Rolling With The Stones Bill dates this session as being 4th May 1963 (p42), there are also photos on p48 and p52 dated April 1963

I scanned these photos from Roy Carr's "An Illustrated Record" published in 1976 and happily accepted the descriptions for many years.
But then, a few years ago some more photos from the same night were published one of which clearly shows Charlie on drums

Charlie on drums:

I don't know when or where these were taken but Keith is clearly playing his Gallotone Valencia guitar which he replaced in February '63.
If there's anything of truth in the original description of them being the Stones' first gig at the Marquee then it could be that they're from the Marquee on January 17, 1963 which was the first time that the final line up played at the Marquee.
This is pure speculation on my behalf but, I think, food for thought.
Photos taken on stage by Stu?

Thanks for all the detailed posts - very informative. Are there any photos of
the Stones playing at the Flamingo? If not maybe just photos showing the inside?
