It took his retirement from the Stones for people to realize how important he was to their sound. He was never replaced. Not even close. The sound has suffered ever since. Happy Birthday, Bill. I'm waiting for 'The Quiet One' to arrive from Amazon.

I always love to listening your bass line during under my thumb live at Hampton 81 when you was coming up to the stage.
I give extra bass on the hifi system and say: yeah here comes Bill !

In every tune The Rolling Stones played live from the day he joined to the day left. Some acoustic numbers in 1969 might be an exception. So if one has a habit of going to see live shows or listen to the Rolling Stones in concert (quite many has), one can see (hear) a clear distinction between the eras when Bill was a member and when he is not. He was one crucial part of their sound back in the day.
