It stuck me "Hand of Fate" lyrics have a sort of familiarity with "I shot the Sheriff" as to counting the shots, just like in a murder case.

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy

It's all together mean and down to earth... Both songs are about counting the shots, and self-defense... It says a good deal about the poor boy's condition...
