what is your next BIG FOUR - SEQUENTIALLY?
Posted by: treaclefingers ()

The Stones have had several great periods, the one most notably cited as 68-72. What is your next, big 4?

Some Girls - a revival of sorts, artistically and massive success.

Emotional Rescue - a coattails album, 'sounding' even better than it's predecessor.

Tattoo You - latter day peak, never again to be matched in subsequent releases. The Brown Sugar-style lead single that became even bigger and withstood the test of time. Then there was that unmatched suite of songs known as side 2.

Undercover - the final real creative burst by the band that charted a new course that they ultimately didn't follow.

All mine feature killer lead singles, 3/4 massively successful.

I agree 100%

For me ER is easily one of their top 5 albums, maybe even top 3. Not a bad tune on it I even like Where The Boys Go nowadays. The best produced and mixed one as well along with Exile and B & B.

following the rules, sequential means in a row...perhaps you blacked out for most of the 80s? (I know I did!)

Which is more interesting -- a band coming off its peak, or a band hitting its stride and growing. I say the latter, so ...

1. Out of our Heads -- We get the Jagger/Richard template in Satisfaction, The Last Time, Play with Fire. The riffs, the attitude, the variety.
2. Satanic Majesties -- Many great songs -- all those weird organs and olde English lyrics on top, but Keith's riffs underneath, hinting at what the Big Four sound would be.
3. Aftermath -- Maybe their first cohesive album. Side one has three hits that still get played today -- Lady Jane, Under My Thumb and Mothers Little Helper. Side 2 has a good mix of styles and you can hear them learning and growing.
4. Between the Buttons -- Uneven, but two hits and probably all of us have a spot spot for a few of the obscure songs on this alumb.

(I did skip over Decembers Children on the compilation album exception.)

In complete agreement.

SOME GIRLS
EMOTIONAL RESCUE
TATTOO YOU
UNDERCOVER

though I'd switch 2 and 3's slots.

This is easily The Second Big Four. As goofy as ER is it does have some stellar tracks on it, especially within the context of the Ronnie Wood era, as does U.

Not sure if these "next BIG Four" are supposed to be in sequence as they were released, but if so:

Some Girls
*Emotional Rescue
Tattoo You
*Undercover

* Both much weaker than Some Girls and Tattoo You, but for the sake of keeping in sequence have no choice.

If they can be out of chronological sequence, my "next BIG FOUR" is a bit trickier.

Self titled first album (UK)- Yes mostly covers, but the impact these covers had is enormous, and they're all fantastic.
It's Only Rock 'n Roll ...and I like it, like it, yes I do...the title track and Dance Little Sister are the tipping point ensuring this made the list.
Some Girls
Tattoo You

EDIT: I now see the title of thread says "sequentially", but several other posts above veered away from that rule.
I don't recall seeing "sequentially" earlier - maybe the thread title was edited to add sequentially?
Or maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention..................

The Rolling Stones
No. 2
Out Of Our Heads (American version especially)
Aftermath (easily the weakest of the four though)

why does it have to be in a row.

if its the next big 4, its more likely they would not be in a row.

but if thats the rules then

out of our heads
aftermath
buttons
satanic

then

goats head soup
its only rock and roll
black and blue
some girls

Four in a row?

The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones No 2
Out of our heads
Aftermath

And of course:

Goats
Iorr
B&B
LYL

They didn't really have another big four other than the one we call the Golden Age. Maybe a big 3?

SOME GIRLS
EMOTIONAL RESCUE
TATTOO YOU

I don't like UNDERCOVER enough to list it as a "Big" album of any sorts.

I would say Some Girls and Tattoo You were the next two big ones. No way near the big four, but anyway. I think those two albums laid the ground for a younger public
which made it possible to tour forever after the 1981/82 tour. Those two albums actually made half the setlist on the 1981/82 tour. Amazing by today's standards....

I can only come up with a Next Sequential Big 3:

1. Some Girls
2. Emotional Rescue
3. Tatoo You

Never really liked "Black And Blue", or "Undercover",
but, if I had to choose one of the two, it would be "Black and Blue".

I love their mid to late 70s catalogue and consider songs like IYCRM and Hot Stuff to be among their greatest songs. The live versions of Hot Stuff (check out Knebworth) is one of their greatest moments on stage ever. IYCRM live in 1975 was almost as good as their peak(s) in 1973. Almost.

1) To me TATTOO YOU completely spoils the possibility, otherwise prevailing, to consider your quoted sequence as one (next) sequence of four consecutive great studio albums.

2) In my reckoning there are not four first class great albums only, consisting of the '68 - '72 period, but as many as approximately twelve great albums without internal ranking, including three of your socalled "next" big albums . Among them are the seven consecutive albums starting with AFTERMATH.

Then, not as a next big four, but as a first big four, as an alternative to the '68- - '72 albums, I might as well operate with for instance a first big four as that sequence that starts with AFTERMATH UK and is concluded with BEGGARS BANQUET. If the sequence is to consist of only four and not seven great albums, those first four of the seven in all will (quite interesting) be marked as belonging to the Rolling Stones during Brian Jones' period.

Aftermath
Satanic Majesties
Out Of Our Heads
Between The Buttons

The UK versions of each.
I don't have much interest in the band post Exile but that's my problem.
