Stones origins : LA Times epic fail

I was looking for some info on Stu and Rocket 88 recordings when I ran across his obit in the LA Times. What a mangled bit of history!

"In 1961 Stewart, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts became the first Rolling Stones when they performed near London. A fifth member, Brian Jones, who is also dead, was added soon after. Within months Stewart had been replaced by Mick Jagger, and he then became the group’s road manager."

At least they didn't say that ROD Stewart was the band's original singer.

Morons... it was 1962 ! Not 1961.

A fifth member, Brian Jones, who is also dead, was added soon after.

I'm confused, did they add Brian to the band before or after he died?

Brian joined the band post-mortem, just after Charlie replaced Mick as the lead singer. It was a confusing time back then..

That Charlie, always trying to steal the limelight.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Didn't Brian replace Mick Taylor when he left to form the Pretty Things?

It's likely a misprint.
It's Stewart who is also dead.

And Lou Reed joined in 1963, setting the stage for the greatest rock n roll band in history. Man, were those some memorable times - right, Rockman

I would not believe that story until I saw a link or facsimile of the actual story/quote.

It's an article dated December 16, 1985.
Ah well, they didn't have Internet in those days and the autor probably read some poor books/articles and had some poor dreams making him think that things went that way ... poor guy, he's doomed for the rest of his life and eternally after that grinning smiley

I've lived in Los Angeles my entire life and learned of Stu's death from the newspaper - likely from this very article. At the time, I didn't really care about the details - I was just surprised and saddened that Stu was gone.

Um, er... actually there was some Internet in those days.

You may be confusing your point with the World Wide Web which didn't exist until 1991.

You're right of course. The concept of Internet was already around for quite some time, but not for the masses. I started to introduce Internet private line connections for a global company in 1994 and it was already well established in the business world. But man, compared with today ... slow, slow, slow and photos over WWW crashing far too often ...
