Funny how these writers argues about the same as some of us here. I'm with them on the last great Stones album - Tattoo You. One of them even gives bearing to HMS's theory about TY being a compilation
... (come back HMS!). B & L is a cover album. I wouldn't have that one in the discussion in the first place. It's a side project. Nothing else.

Uhhhh...side project? It may be covers but its the Rolling Stones, nothing "side" about it for me.

I would rather listen to BETWEEN THE BUTTONS than interact with most of the human race. A wonderfully underrated album.

My own rankings would be BRIDGES TO BABYLON, BLUE AND LONESOME, THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST.

Their intent was to make a new album with original recordings. They couldn't get that together so instead they came up with a blues cover album. Sure, they started out doing mostly blues covers. But at least they had some own material on every record from the very start. I don't mind a couple of covers on an album. But B & L is strictly a cover album. So, I might be the only one but to me it's a siding. If I want to listen to the blues I rather listen to the original artists. There is more credibility there, so to speak.

last great. tattoo you
last good. blues and lonesome
first bad. wouldnt say bad but black and blue was the worst at that time, then emotional rescue became the worst but wouldnt say it was bad, just average. so the first bad album was dirtywork.

and between the buttons should never be considered bad.

its highly underrated.

Last Great: TATTOO YOU
Last Good: BLUE & LONESOME
First Bad: *

* It depends on how you want to define their "first bad" album. Is there truly a "bad" Rolling Stones album? Even what critics consider their worst albums, are a hell of a lot better than the output other bands put out.

I'd rather rephrase it as their "First Weak" album. In that case, I'd say THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST. If we're going to say weak like nothing new or interesting was brought to the table, I'd say IT'S ONLY ROCK 'N ROLL.

Hahaha! Now we know where HMS is:

'it wasn't so much a new project as a compilation'

You're not saying the Stones' worst/weakest albums are better than any other album by any other band or artist in the history of rock and roll are you?

So that means any pre-AFTERMATH album is also a side project.

We'll just put you in the Kook File with HMS.

That has zero relevance and is complete bollocks. Some people find it easy to not include context - "No Stones album is bad!" and other blindly bright ignorant continuous mirror imagery that sums up... one living under a rock. There are thousands of albums that are better than some Stones albums, period.

Did I say that? Of course not. Every Stones album in the beginning had original compositions on them. Understandably they were full of blues covers also.
But to do blues covers in England in 1963 was really to be in the avant-garde. Which it wasn't in 2016. On the contrary. Rather pointless.
I would be more careful with insults were I you, Skippy. Tread gently.

Oh no of course not! I can name plenty of albums that are WAY better than the Stones' weakest albums. That'd be crazy lol

Ok, CALM DOWN HERE. I'm saying that other bands have put out worse albums than what people consider the Stones' worst albums. I'm not that delusional lol It's amazing nobody can say anything anymore without it being taken out of context and getting thrown under the bus. Take a chill pill my friend. eye rolling smiley

DeRiso: Goats Head Soup seems to possess many of the ingredients required of a great Stones album: A darkly sexy Chuck Berry rip ("Star Star"); a surprisingly heartfelt ballad ("Angie"); a furious rocker ("100 Years Ago");

Say what? I must have missed that track....A FURIOUS ROCKER?????
