1. Beggars: best of Stones w Brian, and Stones w Brian are my fav version of the band.

2. Exile: best of Stones w/o Brian. Could even be my fav rock LP ever.

3. Fingers: the Back in Black of the Stones. Side 1 is perfect. Side 2 almost.

4. Bleed: like a woman that everybody considers stunning, and IS stunning, a woman that I should feel ashamed to confess I don't like, yet ...

C

Brian's contribution to Beggars Banquet was that little (slide on NE, harmonica on DD, some percussions and background singing), you could easily count BB as the first album w/o him ...

Not correct. He was on 8 tracks. And you forgot his sitar and mellotron playing. Both important contributions to my favourite album smiling smiley

On LIB, however, Brian is doing percussion and autoharp. That's where his contributions were less important to the total album sound.

Exile On Main Street - a sprawling epic of rock and rock, blues, and Americana

Sticky Fingers - extremely polished album that plays like an FM radio station/greatest hits

Let It Bleed - another hit parade, but a darker and more sinister vibe

Beggars Banquet - an almost rustic affair, psychedelic roots music

I think they’re all classic albums.

ive always preferred beggars to the other 3, i bought exile and sticky on the same day back in november 1988, bought beggars may 1989 and let it bleed june 1989, i already knew most songs on exile and sticky before i bought beggars, and i was really surprised, i just felt it was more mature than exile and sticky and let it bleed was great too but beggars songs which elevated it to first place where no expectations, stray cat blues, dear doctor and jigsaw puzzle, the top 4 albums top everything but 1968 for me is hard to compete with regarding the stones.

imagine if jj flash and child of the moon had been inserted to.

what a list of songs that would be

jj flash
sympathy for the devil
no expectations
parachute woman
dear doctor

street fighting man
salt of the earth
child of the moon
stray cat blues
jigsaw puzzle

Nice review.............. I'm ok with JJF but Child of the Moon is great but doesn't fit on BB

If I remember correct, child of the moon is from 1967. It has the sound of that year. Could have been the b-side of Lets spend the night together.

I’m not sure when it originated but Jimmy Miller has the producer credit so it must have been worked on in 1968.

To me there are the big two only:

Exile
Sticky Fingers. The rest are the live versions with Taylor, plus GHS and IORR, and B&B.

The acoustic instrumental version is from 1967. The electric version with lyrics is from 1968.

It's the subject of the thread, nothing else. There's nothing stopping you from starting your own thread about more than 4.

I would like to extend it to the Big Six, but of course no one agrees with me smiling smiley
One could wonder why lists like these are of any interest though.

It is interesting - their 4 most respected albums - why not?

Start a Big 6 thread - some people might place the others above some or all of the Big 4.

People not interested... why the Big 4 - about a band who's about to do their 4th year of a tour with the same name and no new LP in site.

So... whatever. That's how it is here.

Same for me. To me, Beggars is the weak one of the four. Seems like a lot of people feel the same.

"Jumpin' Jack Flash"
"Honky Tonk Women"
"Brown Sugar"
"Tumbling Dice"

Their greatest work between 1968-1972 played at 45 rpm.

Always hard to rank those masterpieces.

As my all time favourite, Sticky Fingers makes it to the top.
The silver medal goes to Exile, LIB and BB

Let It Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Exile on Main Street
Beggar's Banquet

Get Yer Ya Yas Out would have been number one if you included it as a possibility.

Sticky
EOMS
LIB
BB

But what thing to have to rate these 4 (er,,,5 I guess) magnificent slabs of vinyl.

Sticky Fingers sounds like it could be the greatest hits package of any band.

Let It Bleed not far behind, with maybe even a couple of higher highs.

EOMS is just such a vibe...a boogie woogie country blues opera.

Beggar's Banquet is the sound of the beginning of greatness from the twin towers of SFTD and SFM to hidden gems like Prodigal Son, No Expectations, Jigsaw Puzzle and Salt of the Earth.

A very big 4.
