Pick your 00's and 10's Top Five Rolling Stones songs
Posted by: Stoneage ()
Date: September 16, 2019 21:18

Only one studio album (with original recordings) - A Bigger Bang. So I narrowed it down to 5 picks.
B-sides and compilations (new songs) included. Here is my Top Five list:

- Rough Justice
- Oh No, Not You Again
- Don't Stop
- Keys To Your Love
- One More Shot

Please post your list.

Thanks, Jordylicks. Original 00 and 10 recordings is the premise though. Which excludes Plundered My Soul (a 70's leftover) and Hoodoo Blues (a blues cover).

Well in that case you'd have to not include any other leftover or cover from previous decades (Start Me Up, Time Is On My Side) in a favorites list which is a little ridiculous. A Rolling Stones song is a Rolling Stones song, original or cover. smiling smiley

You included the song "So Young" in your 90's Top Ten list which is a 70's leftover. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Okay, we seem to differ here. I do not count the second disc on the EOMS re-issue as original 00 and 10 recordings. I rather see them as 70's leftovers. Am I wrong here?

There was no Stones song called Plundered My Soul, Pass the Wine, Don't Be a Stranger, etc. before the 21st Century. Likewise if the newly recorded vocals incorporate partially new verses (When You're Gone and Do You Think I Really Care? for instance), I would count them as new works cannibalizing previously unpublished compositions. Not sure why we would discount cover versions. Harlem Shuffle had a number of votes in the 1980s for instance. They're studio recordings from the decades in question.

*to further muddy the waters (apologies to Muddy), "When You're Gone" is musically identical to "Red Eyes" on 1,2,3,4. The difference is that "When You're Gone" is a Jagger-Richards-Wood composition published by Promotone's publishing arm while "Red Eyes" is a Ronnie Wood composition (with an inspirational acknowledgement to Mr. Jagger) published by EMI. We know they derive from the same bootlegged outtake with a very rough guide vocal, but for legal purposes they are separate compositions with "When You're Gone" bearing a 2011 copyright and publishing date and featuring substantially new lyrics written and recorded in 2011.

Okay, it's a free choice then. These things are tricky. But in a way I think it would be misleading to count Exile leftovers as their best 2000-2019 recordings...

A fair point. I'll note that I'm voting for lyrics only in those instances unless there were 21st Century musical overdubs (such as Mr. Taylor's lead guitar on "Plundered My Soul").

Listened through A Bigger Bang to make my picks. One note: The sound is not good. The drum sound is horrible.
Was it on that album they put Charlie in a stairway? It sure sounds like that..

2. plundered my soul
3. laugh i nearly died
4. rough justice
5. infamy

Agree about the sound on ABB.

I don't believe you guys are being sincere. One More Shot can hardly even be called a Song. It's little more than a corporate jingle and turns to utter embarrassment when the word "jack" is being used.

Didn't Charlie play a trash can on Moon Is Up?

The riff is fine and then...well, it was a nice riff.

Spare me crucifixion in your jurisdiction, ignore the vegetation, its just lyrical masturbation.

One More Shot impressed me on the 2012 PPV and live in 2013. Probably will never get played live again unfortunately. That's a fact Jack...lol

Not wrong at all! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course! Depends on how you'd like to look at it (and how these songs were promoted when they were released):

"Start Me Up" was a leftover from the SOME GIRLS sessions in 1977 with new lead vocals and a new guitar overdub from Ronnie and released as a single in 1981, promoted as a brand new song and released on a new studio album, TATTOO YOU.

"Plundered My Soul" was a leftover from the EXILE sessions in 1971 with new lead vocals and a new lead guitar overdub from Mick Taylor and released as a single in 2010, promoted as a reworked EXILE leftover and released as a bonus track on the EXILE re-release.

It's like so bad you immediately put a disappointment insulation shield up during the first listen. When you're at "Iluviluviluviluviluvya" even that can't hurt you anymore. Allowing this into "the canon" equals second-guessing all of it. Much like the gorilla cover actually.
