Ronnie Wood review – Chuck Berry tribute show neither rocks nor rolls

Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London

Lulu and Imelda May bring powerhouse guest vocals but the Rolling Stone can’t match up in this mediocre homage

That does not sound like what I saw and heard yesterday. Perhaps not 5 stars but far far better than what this man wrote.

Not an unreasonable review. His criticism is all about Ronnie not being a proper singer and lacking charisma as a frontman. That's valid from an outsider's perspective. We love the Stones. We love Keith's vocals and buy his solo albums and Ronnie's. The guy probably never liked Dylan as a vocalist either. It's a valid complaint. As for preferring the originals, isn't that often the case with tributes? One could argue it's the point of them in the first place. I have no issue with the review from a guy who wanted a proper singer fronting the band. Did he miss the point? Sure, but he's one of the few people there who didn't have a clue what Ronnie's vocal limitations were.

I like Lulu...……….. although she is not in the same league as Dusty Springfield or a few other great British female music artists. Good on yer Lulu. thumbs up

A few more clips from last night. Some are very short.

Does anyone here who went to both gigs, have a preference for the All Saints Church gig held in my home town of Kingston, or the Shepherds Bush Empire gig ?

I can also agree on Wood's voice, Wood is not a singer, he sings because he likes to do it, but I disagree on charisma at all, Wood has plenty to sell and he has always been a charismatic character.

From a neutral point of view I can understand someone's view that the show was nothing special or earth shaking. But guys, it's just ronnie playing some of his favorite tunes to his buddies and fans of the stones. So that's exactly what most of us have expected ;-)

For me the show was good, but could have been better. From a musicians point of view ronnie could have thrown in some songs with other patterns or chords to break up the standard rhythm and blues and get more variety in the setlist.

ok, many of chuck's songs sound similar, but there are exceptions to this rule like "come on" or "nadine" to name a few.

And then ronnie could have said some words about the chosen songs. Why does he play this tune? What does he love about it or is there a special meaning for him? Without such a guidance the setlist looked a bit randomly as he could have played 15 other songs from chuck instead and no one would have noticed.

But then Ronnie said something like this: "if you get home and want to listen to the originals then I've done my job." And by now I'm actually listening to chuck to find out more about him. So, Ronnie: Good job smileys with beer

The support act in Shepherd’s Bush was Micky & Jack Broadbent. I thought they did fine. They weren’t at the church show.

The review was irritating. If like Ronnies voice, especially on the I feel like playing album. And I was also impressed by Ronnies stage performance. However I would have been even more glad if he had played some of his own material as encore.

Hi Tony,
I hope you're keeping well. For enjoyment of the music and socialising, I preferred the Shepherd's Bush show.

But the Kingston show was fun in a different way and I'm glad I went. A bit chaotic, an hour late in starting and all the usual Argy bargy of an all standing show. People pushing in, Far too many people holding their phones high to film several complete songs and blocking others' view despite repeated requests to stop. I only ever take still shots. See my FB page for the full commercial breakdown winking smiley We all shivered outside in the cold during the extremely long soundcheck.

Beautiful venue though and good to see so many Stonea fans from far away. The chap behind me in the queue was a native Kingstonian who'd bought his ticket from the Banquet Records shop.

Nice town btw and I'd like to have seen it in daylight.

Thanks for posting and will be watching the whole video in the next couple of days.

Also to Gunnar A who also did the really nice 20 minute Kingston video as well.
Could see in the first few minutes all the phones being held up high in some cases.

Two great videos by the same person, but wouldn't it be great if there could be a video licence for music fans capable of taking the best videos …...……………..and everyone else ………..just watch the show. thumbs up

I know it's not practical and all official videos of some gigs come out some time later. confused smiley

Only just seen your reply Gregor and so glad you managed to get to both gigs.

Amazing that I can recognise in the pics from Kingston so many Stones fans from all over Europe, USA and Canada and of course those amazing fans from South America. thumbs up
The old church does bring back memories for me, of my younger days when Kingston was such a nice place to live, with The Thames and Richmond Park both nearby the Town Centre.
Things have changed now and all the old places I remember get demolished and replaced with new concrete jungles.
Down your part of the world in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and West Country in general are my ideal areas to live.
Enjoy any more of the Ronnie gigs you are going to as he certainly knows how to enjoy life...…..and also to please the fans.smileys with beer

After seeing this video I am reminded that Ben Waters sounds as close to Stu as possible.
Would not mind hearing him perform with the Stones, either on album or live.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Hello everyone!

The gig was sooo good! I am over the moon I had that honour to participate in this gig.

I just would like to say thank you to every person I met during this concert. Everyone was super nice. Greetings to Benjamin, Matt, Gail, Klaus and Hauke - I don't know if you read this but THANK YOU FOR YOUR MASSIVE SUPPORT and great company.

Warm hugs to Bjornulf, I was too shy to say hi. Get well as soon as possible smiling smiley
