Just got back from the IMAX show. The place was packed, probably four times as many people as were there for the Beatles Rooftop Concert a couple years ago. The turnout kinda surprised me, especially since these seemed like knowledgeable fans who knew what they were there to see. It's not as if they were all expecting "Comfortably Numb" and a laser show and were sitting there all confused like what the hell is this?

My favorite part of the film has always been when the camera makes a complete 360 degree circle around the band during the "funky" section of "Echoes Part I." That still looks and sounds as cool as ever. One thing I guess I'd forgotten since the last time I watched it, is just how much of the time the camera is on Nick Mason. He gets more screen time than the other three guys combined. Almost makes it look as if Pink Floyd is his band. I don't know, maybe the filmmakers didn't think Dave, Roger and Rick had any particular cinematic charisma, though Roger certainly has his moments, screaming his lungs out during "Eugene" or beating the hell out of the cymbals and gong during "Saucerful."

Although I kinda wished they had made this film, or another one like, a couple of years later, this film is important precisely because of the unique moment it captures in Floyd's career. It summarizes the best of the early period live repertoire, while also previewing the music that would mark the end of their days playing theaters and turn them overnight into a stadium act. Like many of their fans, it's the post-1972 music that I mainly listen to. Early Floyd is something of an acquired taste, and even at a mere 1 hour and 25 minutes, I found sitting through the entire thing a bit of a chore. And I thought the same thing in 1978 when I saw it as part of a midnight double feature with Yessongs.

I was away this weekend, and I so wish they were showing it any other time than 4PM during this week. Would love to go but can't be taking off work in the middle of the day to do so.

-Hmm, yeah, some of it. The Saucerful of Secrets studio album, -uh, but live, and having seen this stuff the first time when it was shown in black and white on TV in 1972, I would have thought this would be a constant high, at least that´s how I felt watching the latest Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin movies.

This wasn´t the movie I had hoped for. It´s an ol´ TV film and the sound wasn´t good. Besides it was too loud. My ears are ringing. "Careful" was awful. "Saucerful of Secrets" was awful."Set the Controls.." was awful. -And even "Echoes part 1" was a letdown. I had to put my fingers in my ears some of the time. A chore indeed.

I am a rare Floyd fan in that I don't like most of the Wall. Love this period (Pompei) for the band. This movie it was really made my a huge Floyd fan.

For awhile, I was the same. I'm sure I've said it in this thread. To me, it WASN'T Pink Floyd. They're not long songs, its a whole story, its mostly Roger whining. Over time I grew to love and appreciate it, but there was the longest time that to me I just didn't get the appeal. If THAT was the Pink Floyd you liked then you didn't actually like Pink Floyd to me. To this day, I still think its one of the best first sides to a record of all time, and then its a massive drop off from there till you get to Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell. I appreciate the whole record more than I used to, and seeing Roger do it live (even if most of his vocals were probably re-recorded) was a true sight to see. He may be an anti semite to my religion, but he puts on one hell of a show.

Why did you go several times if you thought it was dreadful?
I saw it several times as well and thought it was fantastic!

Spike, Chris is my buddy of over 40 years.

He works for Ticketmaster and probably had promo or comped tickets.

I went to the show in DC and can understand his point of view. The family sitting next to us left the show because of all the political views.

Saw the show in Zurich. I thought it was one of the most well thought out shows I‘ve ever been too. And I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the uneasiness and disbelief in the faces of the tight-jeans-with-white-ON-sneakers-boomers around me!

Really looking forward to the film and hope Roger has energy for another tour. Even more young people would turn out for his concerts these days.
