One Upon a Time in Hollywood - Out of Time

I REALLY dug it.

I was prepared to not like it due to some of the reviews I've watched, and also because The Hateful Eight left me absolutely cold, but this movie was really damn good.

There is a certain amount of self-indulgence I'm willing to tolerate from QT. Hateful Eight exceeded my personal quote, but UOATIH didn't. The scenes that certain reviewers described as "draggy" simply didn't drag to me. The lush Hollywood scenery and languid pace suited the material just fine.

The ending was appropriately bizarre and made me laugh.

Yeah so where to rank this cool QT movie...I may put it tied 4th with Jackie Brown behind 1 Pulp Fiction, 2 KB I, 3 KB II. I want to see it again, nice comeback for Tarantino. What will his last movie be???

Just off the top of my head, my ranking would be something like:

Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Jackie Brown
Inglorious Basterds
Django Unchained
Once Upon a Time In Hollywood
Deathproof
Kill Bill 1
Kill Bill 2
The Hateful Eight

Hateful Eight was just overlong. It was a great way to spend a freezing cold early January day, though.

It was a cool premise, it was expertly made, and has great performances, but the overall whodunit aspect wasn't that intriguing to me, and the dialogue got super tedious.

It was the first QT movie that left me cold (although Kill Bill 2 underwhelmed), so I'm really glad he bounced back with Once Upon A Time.

Yeah, good rankings keefriff. I would only have KB2 in place of Inglorious Basterds. I could not get into IB for some reason. and Deathproof was IMo pretty good, but I did not like Rodriguez's part.

After I watch UOATIH a few more times, it may leapfrog Inglorious and/or Basterds for #4 or #5. I need to let it settle a bit.

Deathproof is QT's half of Grindhouse. Planet Terror was the Rodriguez half...which was SUPER cheesy, but I liked both.

Watched it.

The Pitt and Di Caprio characters were ace! Di Caprio especially.

As I watched I began to think QT shouldn't have connected the film to a notorious event and just made it all about Pitt and Di Caprio characters.

The Bruce Lee scene is awful, total cringe. The ending... meh.

I think he stained all the scorcese movies he was in (minus "The Wolf Of Wall st.?) but that might be just me... He just doesn't have the stature for Martin' films. DC is more suited to a 2th-rate lighter director like spielberg.

To me DC's playing cannot match the intensity of DeNiro's.
Imagine "Casino" with DC instead of DN... It would have looked like "Days Of Our Lives"... with guns and poker chips... grinning smiley

I loved it! The guy that plays Bruce nailed it, to a T. Not sure if you didn't like that Bruce was battered but Quentin explained that this was to show what a bad-ass Pitt's character was.

It was really funny, but I had mixed emotions about it.

Yeah, it was a good scene to show what a badass Pitt was, but at the expense of a real-life legend? I'm sure Bruce Lee was cocky but portraying him as an uber-arrogant buffoon didn't sit well with a lot of his fans.

But I did laugh hard.

he really didn't though. pitt pretty much side stepped him once, bruxe lee smashed a car and brushed it off

I just loved, loved this movie! I think this is one of QT's better movies. Except for the ending, I didn't think this was AS violent as some of his earlier films- which I liked. Although Leo did an excellent acting job, my academy award would go to Brad Pitt. I thought he stole the show. And Margot Robbie- man, she is the "IT" girl of this current generation!

Trouble was I went to see Suicide Squad. I had terrible trouble trying to strategically place my popcorn over my trousers. She's very attractive !!

I thought Margot was especially scrumptious in Suicide Squad, but we should also give her a nod for her fine acting ability (LOL) in Wolf of Wall Street!

She was brilliant in Wolf of Wall St. She was only 23 and I'd never seen her in anything before. She nailed the Long Island accent and went head to head with Leo perfectly.

I think she used a body double for her nude scene. She denies it, but just my suspicion.

Pretty much agree, though I preferred Pitt over DiCaprio. Trying to tie it in to a notorious moment in history, then depart from that story...just didn’t work for me.

Finally went to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which I had been looking forward to since ads and pics 1st started showing up months ago.
Going to go against many of the rave reviews & comments I’ve seen, and say I was pretty disappointed. It has its moments, but it also has a lot of scenes that to me were just kind of - boring. Not a word I usually associate with Tarantino. And yeah - Leo and Brad are a fun combo (how could they not be?), but I just expected more. Spoiler alert - I certainly expected at least a little more Manson than we get. But overall, compared to Pulp Fiction? A top ten all time great films that I’ve seen 100x and could watch 100 more - I’m not sure I even want to give OUAT a 2nd watch. Oh well...

Rockman, did you see it yet?

I did, yestereday. I'm not a big Taratino fan, except for Pulp Fiction.
I found some parts brilliant and other spots a snooze-fest.

Loved the casting of Pitt and DiCaprio, could watch Brad Pitt all day, and enjoyed Leo playing a
not-so-great actor down on his luck...the two together, what a friendship/work relationship!

On the music, I had to look up who sang on a couple of well-known tunes, not the original
artist. Interesting soundtrack.

Finally made it to watch the movie. IMO way too long, a bit of tight editing wouldn't have hurt. Or maybe way too short? Anyway, if QT is really to release a significantly extended version I'll certainly check it out.

Both Pitt and Di Caprio were absolutely great, with Pitt possibly having the cooler part. I read that originally Tom Cruise should have gotten Brad Pitt's part. I don't think Tom Cruise would have worked out here.

i don't buy many movies but i will get this one. can't wait to see it again. i actually own all of tarantino's films. this will be the first one available in 4k uhd which is a plus. i also don't usually watch movies more than once but tarantino's films stand up to repeated viewing. always finding something new that i missed the last go round.
