The other LP-looking thing is, I believe, and album flat/artwork the size and look of the LP but just a sheet of paper.

Yep - "Limited Edition boxset containing 1 x Heavyweight LP, CD and artcard of the album art." - [www.Amazon.co.uk] - [RonnieWood.tmstor.es] .

Beautiful this album! The Ronnie Wee Wee Hours solo is fantastic. Excellent interpretation of Imelda, overall a lot of fun and good taste!

This album should've been called "Bad Bad".
Chuck Berry and his songs don't deserve such a 'treatment'.
This album is Ronnie's worst attempt and can be compared to the 'quality' of 'She's the Boss' and 'Dogshit in the Doorway'.

I fear, the next forthcoming tribute albums by Ronnie won't be better.

Scrooge not Micawber. Very ungenerous

Just playing the album for the first time and looking forward to the shows next week.
There is some great guitar from Ronnie and piano from Ben on the album. My only criticism is why not more Imelda - she has a great voice!

Reviewed Mad Lad for The Arts Desk the other week, a really enjoyable fun homage, and Ben and Imelda on it are really good. Forgot/couldnt be bothered about posting it around - who reads this stuff anymore anyway? But if you do - enjoy.

Excellent review, Tim. Very well-written. I'm not familiar with your work so it's great to see this shared. I particularly loved, "Mad Lad is a fitting tribute to a master from a disciple, and an adept."

Ronnie is looking for his first ever charting album in the UK Top 100, actually the album is looking good for a Top 30-40 debut next Friday.

Good for Ronnie, but only 2,880 copies sold?
I realize times have changed, but that seems an awfully low number.
Wonder how many copies sold in the US...

In Germany it's #47 in the official Top-100 Album-Charts - [www.MTV.de] .

i think the record comes alive when Imelda May sings. really like her a lot. sort of lukewarm on the rest of it. its ok but i'd probably rather listen to the original Chuck Berry records for the most part. hard to improve upon what is already near perfection!

Everyone can have their own opinion, but the album does not want to add anything, it wants to be just a way of remembering a great rock, Ronnie does it her way and I understand that Ronnie is a divisive guitarist or like or dislike.
But for those who love listening to Wood and his guitar, this is fantastic.

But for those who love listening to Wood and his guitar, this is fantastic. I play the guitar and Ronnie and Keith have been in different ways to refer to me, Ronnie is enough to start playing some slides, but I love his rhythms, so I like it. It's the same reason I listen to the Rolling Stones, a song may not be great, but hey, Jagger sings, they play Keith-Ronnie and Chiarlie, they're not Duran Duran, but maybe they'd make a perfect version, but they aren't the Stones, it's not Mick's voice, it's not Keith and Ronnie's guitar and it's not Charlie's drums!

The art of making music!

2 of 5 stars seems kind.

"Despite a crack band in which pianist Ben Waters figures large, this show soon settles into a chugging, easy groove that lacks the fire Berry had live even in his 80s"

That says quite a bit as Chuck was struggling a bit on his latter years, and this lacks the fire of that?

"But the kindest thing to say about this lumpy tribute is that it might send listeners duckwalking back to the timeless originals".

Like Blue and Lonesome did, but at least that album payed homage to some obscurities, and might have turned some people on to something they've never heard.
In the case of Ronnie's Mad Lad, who hasn't heard of Chuck Berry? Seems pointless imo.
