20/20 Steel Wheels special from 1989 » which show?

Could anyone please help me identify which exact 1989 Steel Wheels show was this?
Sympathy For The Devil, from 0:40. Jagger sings with an extraordinary energy level on this recording.

The presenter at the start of this 20/20 special says "the Stones started the SW tour three weeks ago" so it's probably before the 21 September 1989 Syracuse show but after the first, Veterans show. (It's not that version).

Thanks!
Duked

We puzzled over this a few months ago. The best guess we came up with is that it’s one of the East Troy, Wisconsin shows. There’s a clip of Elton John with them backstage. The timing and location of his 1989 tour aligned with one of those dates.

However, I couldn’t definitively confirm any of this based on YouTube clips.

It *is* a tremendous version of “Sympathy.”

Actually he says “Thank you, Toronto.” And then, I think, something like “Good night-a you-all.”

I believe it was reported in Cincinnati on the Steel Wheels tour, that Mick & Charlie came out to Elton's gig at Riverbend Music Center, but IIRC, they came out to sit in front but had to go backstage again because the fans went bonkers around them.

The Stones were at Riverfront Stadium in Cincy on 14th September, my first Stones gig... I have to research Elton's date at Riverbend, but I know The Stones were in town for a few days before playing Raleigh on the 16th. Tons of media coverage back then...

Setlist.fm shows Elton at Riverbend in Cincy for two shows on 9-12 and 13, then in Knoxville, TN on the 15th...

He was in the region and was off for each of the East Troy dates.

When I saw Elton in mid-August in Los Angeles, he played a good minute and a half of "Brown Sugar" near the end of "The Bitch Is Back" and briefly acknowledged the Stones after, saying something to the effect of "We're all looking forward to seeing them soon." That was quite a summer leading up to the new album and tour.

Thanks a lot for the answers!!!

There are videos on youtube from 09/09 and 11/09/1989 (second night and 3rd night) with Sympathy included. I checked, none of them is THAT version. But those performances are quite close, I have to admit!
So it may be the first night, 08/09/1989.

BTW another page says that Elton was their (backstage) guest on the 11/09/1989.

Well I listened to all three East Troy - Sympathy versions and it's definitely none of them! The mystery (and the investigation) continues.

One of those performances where Mick looses himself in the music. If I remember correctly he does that a little bit on the Bridges to Babylon St Luis version of Sympathy, but not as dramatic as this.

Excellent. I was there. Now I need to watch it to see if my recollection of Bill walking out towards the end of one of the limbs of the stage is accurate or a false memory. If true, a mighty rare thing.

Not quite. The original link has the YouTube parameters on the end "&feature=youtu.be&t=6395" I've never understood the first one (they are separated by the ampersand) but the second one plonks you some way into the video.

Actually, my bad. I've checked dates and I was there on 3rd and not 4th.

Great find! Makes sense. as the JJF clip was Toronto, too. Mick was really feeling it that night.

I always love to watch Mick and Keith signaling during the songs. They've been together on stage for so many years, through so many storms that they don't need much. Jagger comes down from his tower, Keith is wrapping up his solo, back there w/ Charlie, he turns and figures Mick is most likely in position, and they face each other. You know the big B chord is coming. It was most likely them meeting eyes for a second that called it.
looks like even Bill Wyman looks up at Jagger during that 3rd verse. It is pretty extra ordinary how intense Jagger sings at that point.
Then to end it Jagger goes to the nerve center - Keith and Leavell, and then Keith calls it. Bill doesn't even have to turn around. He knows.

I had to go watch it again, it was so good. Actually it is Ronnie who is soloing at the point of the change.
Have to apologize for edits. I had never seen this particular show. And I especially hadn't watched a 89 show in ages. Ronnie is still using his Zemaitis, the metaL fronted one. And Keith seems to be favoring that white Musicman still.

The identified film (Toronto 4th Sept 89) must have been taken on a special (for those days) camera. Assuming it is an audience one, what sort of camera (in 1989) could film for nearly 2.5 hours?

A friend, who was there, who checked it out commented that the sound seemed 'limited'.

My guess is that the sound on the original would have been a bit dicey, so someone (talented) synched the video with an existing bootleg audio. And as bootleg's tend to be a bit over-processed sound wise that may explain it.

Anyone?

It's possibly true, it may have been synced with a different audio recording.

By the way, a soundboard version of the audio recording would be much better... In the 20/20 video of course they used soundboard audio for those few minutes and it sounds good.
