Not really following the tournament but Go Canada!
It's ironic that in North America, the major league is called MLS for Major League Soccer, yet there are several teams that call themselves FC (fill in city).

I have watched many games via the excellent BBC coverage and have enjoyed most of them. Agree with the criticism of VAR which in yesterday's England vs Cameroons match proved inflammatory. Good piece in the Guardian on why VAR is currently being mis-used in a futile attempt to bring "objectivity" into the game. The whole offside thing needs looking at - flags are going up too late.

Most of the games have been played in a spirit of fairness and good manners. The exception yesterday was a Cameroon side who were clearly trying to physically intimidate the English team from the off through cynical and late tackles and in (one case) spitting at an English player. A weak referee was far too tolerant.

England v Norway on Thursday should be good, hope you can see it BV!

Yes, quite refreshing to watch football without most of the diving and cheating that has reached comical levels in the men's game.

In UK they call it "soccer" for some reason,

We call it football, footie, or in Scotland... fitba.

To set the record straight ...

It's proper title is "Association Football" , [ with "Soccer" being kind of a rough abbreviation from that]

But yep it's traditionally "football" in the UK

[...and It's only with US influence that the name Soccer has become more widely used ...to avoid confusion on those with shores with that silly game they call football ...which a bit like Rugby in armour, with a meeting every 30 seconds .grinning smiley]

The Soccer Field is much too big for Women's Football. Against a Sub division Man's team the score would be 30-1 under the current conditions. Woman's tennis is still great to watch, but Football....

Such a man thing to say. grinning smiley

That's your dirty mind. grinning smiley I said the field is too big. If you make it smaller women can make the game faster. On an individual level there are great woman players. Do them justice and adjust the square meters of the field to their physical power. Increases the level of the game and thus more interesting to watch.

I find this discussion remarkable.

Spain v USA on at the moment and 1-1 at half time.
Knockout stage so one of them will be out.
Sweden v Canada play at 8pm U.K. time tonight as well.

Looking forward to Norway v England on Thursday evenings quarter final.

Of course the real highlights of the week are going to be The Rolling Stones playing Chicago 2 gig Tuesday night and also playing another gig in Burls Creek, Ontario on Saturday night. smileys with beer

So DGA35 and Treacles, Canada or Sweden tonight? Can you watch the game over there? I think it's a 50/50 game.
Sweden has to step up a gear - that's for sure. The winner will face Germany in the next round.

Hope Canada wins. TSN which is our ESPN, has shown many games from the tournament every day. They're showing the US game right now.

Could someone please post what is an intentionally rude, very insulting thing to call this game, so people who are about to be chastised for innocently calling the game the "proper local (to them) term" can actually call the game the vulgar name and thus be deserving of the chastising? I mean if someone is going to be screamed at, cussed at and lectured to, at least let them have the fun of doing the crime. It does not seem fair for an innocent person to be penalized for accidentally triggering some nut into an insane rant when they meant no malice.

Ah yes... something like that, something intentionally malicious and insulting like "a bit like Rugby in armour"...
That way if a person is going to feel the insane wrath of some nut, at least it was intentional.

In the meantime, no matter what you call this game... USA women face France next! GOOD WORK USA LADIES!!

Medias here in France have all in mind that the french team will be the winner, just because we have won the World Cup with the guys, just simple as that, since yesterday vs Brazil some of them start to think of another winner >grinning smiley<

Sweden through to the quarterfinals. Poor game. Slow paced. Few chances. Maybe it's the heat? 28 C at night. A heatwave in France apparently.
Team Canada missed a penalty. Quite poorly executed. Sweden will meet tougher opposition in the quarterfinal though. Namely Germany. Probably too tough.

On another note: This tournament is also qualification for the Olympic Games in Japan next year for the European teams.Due to corruption (probably...) only 3 European teams will be invited (out of 12).
So far we have 5 out of 6 European teams through to the quarterfinals. Tomorrow there might be 7. So, to qualify for the Olympics it's a must to reach the semifinals.

Congrats, Sweden. A well-deserved win, and a strong second half.

Well so much for Canada! Didn't watch the game but saw the highlights. Tough to win when you can't score. I wonder what percentage of penalty kicks are saved overall? Read online they were questioning why Christine Sinclair didn't attempt the penalty kick. She's only a couple goals away from being the leading scorer of all time in women's soccer.

Re: OT: Women's Football / Soccer World Cup.

DGA: Apparently Sinclair missed a penalty against Hedvig Lindahl (the Swedish goalie) in a tournament before the WC. The commentators here were speculating
that that may have been the reason for her not to take the penalty. By the way, lindahl takes notes so she guessed that the kick would go in her right hand corner.
Which it did. A good save on a not so good penalty kick...

So, 7 out of 8 European teams in the quarterfinals. I say the Dutch were lucky. Japan played great in the second half and should have scored. A penalty in the 90th minute was the decider.
What should the Japanese defender do? Cut of her arms? They should change the hands rule. Especially now since VAR is introduced. They call this tournament Women's penalty World Cup now on social media...

All this technical stuff can be so overwhelming. confused smiley

When England won the World Cup in 1966 and there was a disputed goal, it was all sorted within a matter of 10 minutes.

So much pressure these days on everyone...…..not less the fans.

Your right although I'm from Holland I don't think this was a penalty.........so they were lucky ("aangeschoten hands or arm" as we say in Holland)

Thanks, Nicos. They are very cute though, the Dutch girls. And I think they will stand a good chance against the Italians in the quarter. A lucky penalty and a lucky draw on top of that!

The Stones play in Ontario on Saturday night and wouldn't be surprised if Mick and Charlie are having a look at the England v Norway quarter final on TV.
England just this minute scored another goal to make it 2-0 .
This game is gonna be so much better than Englands last game, with two great teams who know how to conduct themselves.

Come on England …………….with just a few minutes to half time.smileys with beer

Im no expert on the game, but there seems to be tons of action in US V France today.
The women on both sides look great, playing intense, lots of action. Exciting!

WOW!!! What a match!
France 1 - 2 US with minutes to go! Very aggressive constant action.
These women do not mess around. No matter who wins this was a very entertaining match.

That was a cracker of a match between France and the US. What a battle. I had a strong feeling this tournament would be the making of women’s football. England v US on Tuesday night could be some game.
