Here's a paste of the Chicago Tribune review for those in areas who can't see it.
TY to Chris Fountain here for this piece.
_____________________________________________

"When you get a smile from Charlie Watts, it’s something. Watts is the most self-effacing of the Rolling Stones, and typically plays the drums with a focus that precludes trivial amusements.

But on Friday he couldn’t contain the grin that broke out minutes into the Stones’ opening song at Soldier Field. Singer Mick Jagger was prancing down a long runway from the stage through the audience like a rubber-legged kid who’d just been emancipated from school on the first day of summer.

Not bad for a guy who in March underwent what was described as a “minimally invasive” heart valve replacement procedure, which forced the band to postpone the first 14 dates on its spring-summer No Filter tour.

Jagger’s rapid recovery enabled the band to get back on the road for the Chicago dates, which include a second show Tuesday, their first official concerts since July 2018. The singer looked fit, energetic and particularly animated. There were shoutouts to new Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot and veteran Chicago-born Stones bassist Darryl Jones, an Ed Burke joke (“sorry he couldn’t make it”), regrets that he still hadn’t had an Italian beef and stats, lots of stats: “our 8th time at Soldier Field ... our 38th show in Chicago.” He seemed to be enjoying himself, yes, but there was also an element of show-and-prove, as if he wanted to make it clear that his health issues were just a minor hiccup, not a potential career-ender.

The Stones have gotten up from the mat more times than a veteran prizefighter. There were the ‘60s drug busts, ‘70s heroin addictions, the Jagger-Keith Richards split during the ‘80s, Richards’ brain surgery after falling from a tree in 2006 – the Stones have somehow persevered for more than 50 years, and now routinely rake in upward of $5 million in revenue every night they perform.

Their fame and a trove of decades-old hits eclipse their need to make new recordings (they’ve only produced two studio albums since 1998). Their set lists have rotated two dozen of their best-known songs for the last 20 years. In that respect, Friday’s set was typical, with only two deeper cuts: “Sad Sad Sad,” from the 1989 “Steel Wheels” album, and “You Got Me Rocking” (“Voodoo Lounge,” 1994). They also were the only two songs from later than 1981.

Which clearly is exactly what the vast majority of the fans paid to see.

The show underlined again how the Stones have morphed into a party band from the renegades they once were. Once-sinister songs such as “Gimme Shelter” and “Sympathy for the Devil” have become sing-alongs. The warped, illicit, downright nasty perspectives of “Brown Sugar” and “Midnight Rambler” have become almost comforting, reassuring classic-rock evergreens.

Yet the Stones remain averse to playing their songs the same way night after night. It’s just not in their DNA. Richards and his guitar accomplice, Ronnie Wood, often sound like they’re still learning the songs as they poke and prod through a thicket of dissonance and distortion. They remain unpredictable, and their roles change nightly. On Friday, Richards was more subdued as he locked in with Watts, while Wood signaled his eagerness with taut solos in “Tumbling Dice” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”

The Richards-Wood guitar interplay stuttered and coughed into existence before locking in during “Before They Make Me Run” and “Tumbling Dice.” With Watts remaining implacable in his brilliance, the groove was allowed to slip and slide. This wasn’t about precision, it was about swing. Jagger twirled his minuscule hips and gangly limbs in a dance with that rhythm, as if his body were being controlled by the flicks of Watts’ wrists.

The core band members — abetted by back-up singers, a horn section and redoubtable keyboardist Chuck Leavell – played as if they knew they had all dodged another bullet. During “Midnight Rambler,” Jagger wailed on blues harp and dipped his head onto Wood’s shoulder, as the guitarists took turns pulling apart the propulsive riff and then weaving it back together again.

On the closing “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” Jagger stood between the guitarists’ fuzz-tone assault and dipped at the waist as he wailed the final verse and refrain. Richards looked on with an expression that merged amusement and wonder. Even with a staid set list, the Stones can still find ways to surprise not just their fans, but each other."

Thanks, Hopkins. A better review than the usual (crap...). Even some setlist criticism. Has he read the IORR Tell Me forum? Positive, still with some veiled criticism.

When it comes to local press it's often an element of provincialism involved. Which people not always take into account. A journalist that writes down a huge event
(which an RS gig is, even in a big town like Chicago) is not going to be popular in his own town. It might even destroy a career...

I suppose it's possible Keith moves as much as he can, at 75 it's likely he doesn't have the energy to move much so just tries to make up for it by playing the very best he can for two hours rather than get knackered and make a mess of his playing.
It can be difficult to watch though, i loved it when Keith moved all over the place but we all get old. Time to realise Keith's limitations, look at those fingers, it's a wonder he still does this for the Stones and the fans. In a way i'd rather he'd called time on touring with the Stones in 03' when we could have remembered him for Keith Richards the performer he was back then.
Having said that he might get more into it as he goes along, Keith doesn't fake anything and he just might not have been in the mood in Chicago, he doesn't like the cold does he.

I agree with some of this sentiment, but Keith at the end of the 2018 leg was moving far more than he did for the opener in Dublin; indeed, he was already moving around more at the next show in London. I definitely think he doesn't like the cold though; I thought the indoor 2017 shows were generally better for him than the outdoor ones. However, JESUS CHRIST I AM GLAD HE DIDN'T CALL IT QUITS IN 2003. Whatever his/their limitations, I have seen some of my best ever Stones shows in the last few years and I would not want give them up for anything.

syrel

Couple things i'd like to clarify, if you read my posts over the last few pages i have been saying Keith always finishes tours moving much better than at the start.
Also i don't mean i wish the Stones stopped playing as a band since 2003 , but a part of me struggles to watch Keith with his limitations since then, it's just not the same performer where he is concerned. Yes Ronnie has improved and Mick still reaches a standard that doesn't depress me, but it's just hard coming to terms with my hero Keith being an old man, he defied logic for so many years, he walked a tightrope night after night and pulled it off in style.

But anyway so pleased he still does this but really i hope this is the last tour. That's just me though, it's not enough to just focus on Mick and Ronnie, Keith is (was) the Stones for me.

I kind of agree with this. Keith is the Stones for me and he’s why I picked up the guitar myself. It can be hard to watch but I still love seeing the pure joy on his face - it’s as infectious today as it always has been. That joy elevates the whole experience for me and his sense of space and timing and the truly classic licks are all still present in spades. So in the end I’m still overjoyed to continue to be able to see this band live long after I thought it would be over.

Keith is fine and still can say everything he wants to with power chords, timing and riffs. No need to worry.

That's right JN99, that is the positive way to look at it, it's futile to expect more from him, we can wish and will him to perform at a certain level but it just can't happen.
As you say we still gets moments of brilliance from him, that solo on SSSad, he's blasting out those intro's like never before, he can still write great music when he wants and vocally he still has a lot to offer. Maybe he still has something up his sleeve, you just never know with Keith, i hope we get a few more surprises from him this tour.

This leather jacket is, most probably, for one use only (the Chicago gigs). I wonder if he had it specially made or if it's stock article.
I'm sure he's not going to wear it again. They have stepped up a gear when it comes to stage clothing since the 1981 tour...

Was anyone at the show able to find a merch stand selling the lithograph? I tried about 8 and couldn't find it.

syrel

Two stands at the South gate had the poster before the show. After the show it was gone. One guy had bought several copies and was selling them for 100 USD each on the street after the show. Others (or the same guy?) are selling them on ebay now.

.....

Last I looked and I stopped watching a year or so ago... The Cadillac design litho from Cuba seems to be the most expensive in the secondary markets and I have no idea if they were numbered, but people were paying 200-300 for them in the REsale market, while they were still for sale at the store for $50.00! That was funny and head scratching.

....

And they are doing it again! (both buyers and sellers)
It is a mystery to me why anyone would buy one of these posters (paying $120.00) from a ebay seller clearly stating that the item in a presale and will arrive in months... when the exact item is for sale at the store for $50.00. [therollingstonesshop.com]

This is a SOLD/completed deal. [www.ebay.com]

"Offered prices" are meaningless, people can put anything there, look at sold prices.

So anyway... one might check the store first, buy 2 for 50 bucks.. have 20 left over for a case of beer.

Yeah i know, but i'm a guitar guy and Keith's my man, FOR ME Keith is the Stones, but of course you are right, Mick is the Stones for most people, and Mick is keeping his end up very well when it comes to performing, hats of to Mick, just incredible, a phenomenon, Ronnie the same, he just keeps getting better since 2012, i can't believe how well he is playing.
Keith is the Stones is just me being a knob.winking smiley pay no attention.

I don't think we are a million miles apart in our views. Keith is my hero too (I changed my middle names to Keith Richard when I was 18) and I can find it difficult to watch when he sometimes struggles to keep up (you can see it in interviews too). He is clearly not as sharp as he used to be, and that is hard to watch. That said, because I was in the stands I spent much more of the show listening rather than watching on Friday and I thought Keith was right on the money all the way through the show. Really, he nailed it (and I don't think I am apologist; I actually enjoy a few mistakes). I don't know how he does it with those fingers of his but, musically, I heard nothing to make me sad, or to think they should finish. If keith has to interact with the crowd less than he used to in order to be able to play well, so be it - but when I am up close at a show I watch nothing but Keith, and I still see joy on his face when he stands opposite Charlie or Ronnie and is just playing. That is what I go to shows for.

I get the point about sadness, and share some of it, but to me there is still much more to be happy for.

I was 5th row in 207, at the end closest to the stage so just above 106. View was excellent - close enough that I was watching the people rather than the screens, although I couldn't see the expressions on their faces too well. Sound was ok - in loud songs it was very good, there is a speaker stack aiming at you; but in quiet songs (especially on b stage) I could hear a distinct echo coming from the back of the stadium, which was distracting. All in all, if you are in 106/7, I think you'll be pretty happy.

WOW, just fckng WOW-

It’s hard to even find a reference point to use as a tether to allow one to grasp the magnitude of this band.
The sheer triumph of human endeavor on display is just mind blowing.a band of musicians well into their 70s playing a concert in an American Football stadium that holds thousands upon thousands of people... and to just leave all but the most cynical of them in a state of awe is just breathtaking.
Finding a reference point is difficult,Muhammad Ali’s career lasted about 20 years,Shakespeare died at 52,Steve Jobs at 56.
In their own field, their nearest contemporaries,The Beatles and Led Zeppelin have gone by the wayside a half century ago.
The Rolling Stones....honestly,can you believe it?

Get there early, grab onto the rail as close to front corner as you can, stay there the whole time, avoid looking back or getting shoved out and you should be fine. Serious.

One of the perils of being the “ last band standing “ is your best fan site becomes the catch-all classic rock forum.
I was waiting for the “hold on a minute, don’t get carried away” crowd to start chirping when all the glowing reviews came in,not only from the media but from the fans in attendance.
When the Stones are your 3rd favorite band but you come here because it’s the only game left in town and you want to hear good things about the Stones but let’s get serious “they’re no ( Beatles,Who,Zep,AC/DC etc)and we need to temper our enthusiasm.
No we don’t -the Stones were and still are a better band than the Beatles.the Stones are a far superior group of musicians than Zep.
The former was a pop group and the latter is a creation of a session musician who stole almost every song they played.
If you somehow think bands like AC/DC and The Who are in the same league as the Stones you are operating on a level somewhere around the special needs person businesses sometimes hire to greet their patrons at the door.
I will try to treat you accordingly-hey,good to see ya,keep up the good work.
Mick Jagger is a far superior talent than Elvis Presley ever thought of being,Elvis couldn’t handle his drugs and wasn’t professional enough to stay in shape for his audience and beyond that
Elvis couldn’t write a song to save his life.

welcome to IORR,deal with it.

Just to be clear:

"a better band than the Beatles" - conjecture. no evidence for this position. not the opinion held by the vast majority of fans over the years. you can like one band better than another -- doesn't make them "better."

"a far superior group of musicians than Zep" - conjecture. no evidence for this position. you can prefer the music of one group of players to another, but there is no basis for claiming in any way that rises above personal preference that Keith and Bill and Charlie are better musicians than Page, Jones, or Bonham.

"Mick Jagger is a far superior talent than Elvis Presley" - conjecture, no evidence offered for this position, and once again flies in the face of the judgement rendered by millions of music fans the world over for the past 65 years or so.

The last band standing is simply the last band standing. There's a lot to be said for quantity, for longevity. There's also a lot to be said for quality and sheer excellence. The fact that the Stones are still playing - while it's a marvel and unpredented in rock history - doesn't make, in and of itself, Satanic Majesties a better album than Sgt Pepper's ... it just means ... they're still playing.
