I was thinking about the constant release of RS live material today. In multiple formats (LP/CD/DVD/Bluray/Stream). And everything you can watch/listen to for free on the internet (Youtube and other sites).
Has it killed off the bootleg market? Are there anyone here still buying bootlegs? I can't remember when I last bought one...

I would say the vault releases might be killing the bootleg market more than Youtube. Some people want physical releases no matter what, especially the lp collecting crowd.

When we where able to burn our own CD's the bootleg market was almost killed.........after we we able to download it, is dead

The Godfather/Casino vinyl releases are pretty good. They seem to have improved upon the sound quality of earlier boots and except for when nostalgia kicks in I'd prefer these newer versions.. Good packaging too. Def better than RSD releases imo

Why anybody buys these today is beyond me. Most of the new stuff is just downloaded from torrent sites for free with a couple of pictures downloaded from then internet. As someone who tapes shows nothing pisses me off more than making my recordings available for free, seeing them show up for sale and seeing money being made by folks who do nothing. For the upcoming tour mot if not all shows will be recorded and made available for free by tapers who know what they are doing using good to excellent recording gear. Jut download it and make your own artwork.

It's a shame in some ways that things have changed so much ...but even the vinyl lovers will find today that the vinyl is simply cut from the same digital file they could have downloaded themselves .

I can get everything from Apple Play or Sirius XM. I refuse to steal.

I stoppen buying/ collecting Stones live boots with/after Bigger Bang tour.
Mostly because of the quality of the music.

Well at times Crystal Cat manages to release A++++ exclusive recordings of Swedish shows that are worth the price of admission imo.

The Japanese make some good stuff too. But yeah, the Golden Age is over or changed a lot.

I am still buying bootlegs. I love the magic about it and the love that was put into it.
For example I am in love with all the TSP records. I grew up listening to "Live'r Than You'll Ever Be", "Atlantic City", "Out on Bail" or "Philadelphia Special" - all of which I bought on vinyl back then. Such great records.

I just bought "Brussels Affairs" on vinyl on ebay because I own the CD and it is my favorite recording and so I had to get it. Plus somehow it sounds tighter than the official release (which I also have and like)

The Pig lives on! That's what I grew up on too. Was always excited about the next release. Those were the days. Damn I'm old!

with James and David two eccentric brothers from The Jersey Island ..

James had some bootlegs and he was dead broke so I bought
Liver Than You'll Ever Be and Hendrix's Live Experience from him .... Still have both those albums somewhere

It reminds me of a very recent discussion I was having with my oldest friend on the planet. He is a hardcore collector, and like many here from the golden era of boots in late 90's. I was saying to him that I can't remember when I actually acquired my last actual boot; and asked him why on earth he still did it. He said:
"It makes me happy".
It completely slayed me.

I remember that one...saw it in a local record store in the summer of '82. Was surprised to see it there as the place was pretty legit - a smattering of various boots popped up around that time. It was $25 and I passed because I had taped the show off the radio and had my cassettes. Wish I had grabbed it, but I was in high school and that was a lot of dough at the time!

One of my first boots: Nasty Music double LP (London & Bussels 1973, and four tracks from New York 1972) - greatest of them all, IMHO.

Another early one: Welcome to Frankfurt 1976 colored Vinyl - great look bit shitty Sound - Bill's amp broke down so there was no bass guitar on the record.

But then - Bright lights big city - great early recordings (IBC Demos)

I still buy bootlegs, got my own oasis in Town where I get them. From The Vault and bootlegs are both essential to me.

I suppose the position with hard copy "bootlegs" more or less mirrors the situation with vinyl releases in general.

Whilst ever there are sufficient of us who still buy vinyl [whether to play routinely or just to collect ] they'll still be around.

For me, a lot of it's about sound quality . I've never been a "completest" collector and have only ever purchased boots when I've heard them and been happy with the quality.

Yup...Cirkus Stockholm 2003 was one of the best purchases I ever made. If others got it for free somehow, good for them. I'm still happy.

It's really a pity - there was that time when you desired those boots so bad. Maybe the title, or the cover artwork made it irresistible; but hardly ever because you knew that it was a good show, and excellent sound quality. You wished you could afford all the new arrivals at the record store.
And now that we have easy access to literally everything, we complain.
What I really liked about the boots was the sharing. The turning-each-other-on-feel, about it all. Not only did a new boot blow you away, but you were now going to blow your friends away; and vice versa. Today, when you mention a boot, you will get a yawn, and maybe a link to previous thread. ('Simpsons did it.'.)

I gave Europe '73 (splatter vinyl) a spin today, inspired by this thread

. I spin some boot vinyl every morning.. To each their own but I love 'em, I picked up a bunch of them a couple months ago when someone turned their collection in to our local record shop (all Stones).. With people like Godfather/Casino (I know, I know, I mention them often..) turning out 180 gram solid sound versions with great artwork it's a new field again.. I don't do the download/bit torrent whatever they're called cuz I prefer vinyl and dislike playing with computers.. If you choose to share your recordings free, awesome!! And if you want to make a 180 gram version with great art that I don't have to download, print, mock up etc then I will pay you for 'em

i get a lot of obscure stuff from youtube, instrumentals, outtakes, alternative recordings, rare live stuff, always find something most weeks.

dont know where to get vinyl bootlegs though, where does everyone else get them.

In my case i still buy cd's but only in digipack or mini lp format editions. Don't buy any jewel case cd since 5 years at least, really hate jewel cases, i prefer to download the cd rather to buy it in a jewel case format.

The same aply to bootlegs, the last ones I bought years ago were the Mighty Diamonds editions. I would like to keep buying bootlegs but all the web pages where I used to buy from have gone.

There was a time in the ninties that I bought allmost every bootleg cd I could get. But that's a long time ago, but I still buy at least ten bootlegs a year. Most of it are Japanese labels like No label and Xavell.


Last year I bought the Xavell and Empress Valley in ear monitor mixes and a couple of No label Undercover outtakes stuff, but that's it.

For the beautiful artwork I buy vinyl bootlegs like the Swingin' Pig releases from the eighties and nineties.

My problem is that I'm too lazy to download all the stuff which is available for free and what I 've downloaded I 've never listened to.
