Maybe you should explain what you mean with "understood". Do you mean the lyrics? Or do you mean, liking the music?

My interpretation of your opening post: Many songs you think are good or even great. Some or quite many songs you find not so good or are indifferent to. However, these are songs that are puzzling to you in the sense that you are aware that they may be good, but somehow and intriguingly you still can't personally relate to them, even when you think you should.

Something in that vein?

And his coat is torn and frayed
It's seen much better days
Just as long as the guitar plays
Let it steal your heart away

Answering the question in a slightly different way. I’m often struck by how strange many of Mick’s lyrics are. Even the early songs. ‘Your mother who neglected you owes a million dollars tax. And your father’s still perfecting ways of making sealing wax.’ That’s But one example of this is not ‘I wanna hold your hand’ stuff. Many Stones songs have those slightly weird lyrics when you actually think about them, you’re like ‘what?’

Bob Dylan was all the rage back then and he wrote lyrics like that: social criticism but not too obvious and instead of using charicatures, using "real-life persons and their odd ways". In this case, it's not so hard to understand really. She's a spoilt rich girl with a non-tax paying mother and an eccentric father with a dull hobby. Compare with "Like A Rolling Stone" for instance.

I never understood the 'bell' part of this line........

"Bell flight fourteen you now can land" - 2000 light years

Rolls off the tongue beautifully though...........maybe that's the whole and the only point?

I’m not saying Stones lyrics are inscrutable, nor comparing them to Dylan, who I happen to think is America’s greatest songwriter. Just saying a lot of them are ‘odd’, comical even, compared to the usual pop stuff. Heck, the whole Let it Bleed album is like Alice in Wonderland type of wordsmith. Probably why it all still seems so interesting after all these years.

I was thinking, actually talking about Jagger's lyrics earlier because of doing an interview where it came up. And I think about what Jagger has said about it a lot; the way he writes lyrics nowadays. But I feel it has really hurt him as an artist.
He has stated in several places that for him the best way is to get up, have some b' fast and then start furiously writing everything down in rough drafts. Not worry about meter, rhymes etc. That you fix and adapt later when you start editing, and fashioning it into a song or whatever. It sounds good because I like the notion that you go free, w/o a net, and let yourself just associate. ( I think I've seen Peter Gabriel say something similar). But the results have not been all that stellar. There are photos of Jagger in late 60's and 70's clutching a notebook, and it looks like he was on a more poetic plane. His lyrics resonated more. There is something very workman-like in today's lyrics. To serve a purpose, fill a need.
And even the ones that are meant to heard as more involved or passionate...I don't know. E.g. "Laugh I Nearly Died" really is hollow IMO. He's already done that one better.
I wish I had experienced Dy;an when he was in his day. Just to watch him. He must have been in a state where he was like "I can't stop!"

well, i get she's a honky, not that a floozy woman's color need come to it, but I'm hep to these beatniks using hep talk, and at least I always understood. It's the Tonk thing that blisters my billows!? confused smiley
If she was from Tonga it would have been far cooler.
Honky Tonga women not only made sense, it was the original lyrics they stole from bill! Those bastids* ,
(to coin a word a poster here also stole from bill.)
I like to source things. i'm a deep diver fan, millenial peeps. just sayin' ...before the web there were people. oh they weren't all smart and connected to space through a tracking device, but there were a few us trying to soldier on till you arrived just in time for doo doo wop; their vocal ensemble cover LP. they're remastering the special edition before they release the first one. at least one of them sobered up a little that day in school i guess.

Bill had the idea for Brew and Bone Some, but they stole that too.
they'll be fotoshopping todgers before it's over; somebody's sniffing the
shit they use to blow up those dolls. note to self: call your insider contacts Very close to the action, "blow up dolls"
==
seriously, blow the @#$%& up. think Kiss. they stand there, shit blows,
they cash checks. someone plays the radio and the guy that dyes that
hair they glue to his fat arms; sleeveless; the carefree look for instant chest hair. "Glue and bone some," asks Bill, getting a little interested instead of isolating again, thinking he's King of the Hill cause he's the writer.
If he thinks his butt is so precious why don't he quit?

so i don't understand that either. but that's not a song.
okay, i got tonk. [www.gamblingsites.com]

they confused it with tumbling dice, which is only one of the songs
that ruined exiles LP. Ever since Between The Buttons I've been waiting
for another real good one. i'm loyal.
it would be to a 'tee' but i'd have to sell my car to buy one,
then how would i drive to the 99 cent store to get one from China that
isn't a copy. i do official; i support those guys. they have responsibility too. After taxes they don't pay, it's probs only a million an hour.
they have kids. kids need pampers., have a heart.
they should do a heart cover album. Bad and Loathsome.
well at least we finally got a new album. they forgot the Key Tonk,
even the Woman. i dig all souled out; they they flashed into another genre with that jump.
