Dare I suggest "Crown of Creation" by Jefferson Airplane? I thought this album was so bare and sensous, so unspoiled by marketing considerations, so devoid of any attempt to flesh things out. It was trance-like and transporting me to another time. Then it`s not so much that anymore...

London Calling - always on greatest album ever lists. I bought it 15 years ago, played it and never opened the CD case ever again. Not sure why this is considered a great album. Was it something unique at the time - like punk?

I know this blasphemy to some, but I just can't listen to Van's Astral Weeks.

I love most of his other albums.

I had the same experience with Pet Sounds - I listened to it until one day, it clicked!

"No Anchovies, Please"

I felt that way about those two albums, Elmo and BowieStone

Both albums clicked eventually, but it took a little longer with Astral Weeks..

"OK Computer" by Radiohead. I've tried several times, and it's not computing.


Reverse would albums by the Smiths for me. Who at first I do not like but made myself dig and find it.

maybe theyre not classics, but i was well into them and then i lost interest as i did with u2 altogether, apart from the early stuff and live at redrocks. dont dig them much these days, they just lost everything that made them great, they retained none of it unlike other bands.

PET SOUNDS. Didn't even make it to a second spin - out the window.

I was never drawn to Patti Smith but then happened to catch her mid-performance on PBS and was so captivated I went out and bought HORSES, but was underwhelmed and played it three times max. Nothing of hers has grabbed me since (a jeu d'esprit deficit).

Regardless of your tastes both those albums remain seminal. Actually epic.

Blue and Lonesome. Wouldn't say it's 'Blue and Boring' or 'Boring and Lonesome' as others have called it, but it didn't have any staying power - after all they were standard/simplistic covers.
Liked the first a couple of singles prior to full release and still do (especially live) but once I heard the whole album it was quite anticlimactic. After a week or two, shelved...the thrill was gone.

It´s great because it´s not punk.

Yep the diversity of influence is a big part of it's quality.

[They draw from various genres but integrate those influences seamlessly into their own sound ...a bit like the Stones have always done it ]

I loathe Sgt Pepper. The most overrated album in history and completely unlistenable.

Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys is pure hell as a listening experience to me. I find it relentlessly depressing.

B&L is not a classic album.

I wouldn't call "Blue & Lonesome" a classic album, but it certainly paled fast.

An album which I never got, as mentioned by others is, is "Pet Sounds". I expected something brilliant and got something boring.

Another overrated album is the Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper's" but at least I can see how that one was new and weird and revolutionary when it came out. It just didn't age very well and if you take away the gimmicks, you end up with uncharacteristally weak McCartney songs (with soap-opera lyrics) and monotonous Lennon. The thing by Harrison I can't imagine even was listenable when it came out.

Sticking with the Beatles, "Revolver" doesn't exactly pale, since "Here, There and Everywhere" and "Tomorrow Never Knows" are both brilliant, but the rest is either mediocre or just silly and bad (Taxman, Yellow Submarine), so the album as a whole is impossible to listen to.

Other "classics" which I doubt many people listen to entirely (I certainly don't): "Never Mind The Bullocks" (3 good songs, the rest uninteresting) and Captain's Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" (his more accesible albums are more fun in the long run).

Just my 5 cts.

There are many classic albums that I have never much cared for/be thrilled about - such as SGT. PEPPER (or any Beatles album), PET SOUNDS, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, The JOSHUA TREE, etc etc - and my stance hasn't dramatically changed. But of those ones, which really once meant very much for me, but the thrill is gone, I think the ones I have lately noticed has been NEVER MIND THE BULLOCKS (the same goes for almost any English-based punk rock) and most lately, TALK IS CHEAP (I guess the latter should be considered as a rather classical one at least within a Rolling Stones fanbase). But I think the case is more of that the the receiver has changed, not the quality of the music.

But as it usually is with music, the development goes generally other way around: one discovers that the things once not 'clicking' are doing that later as the years go by, while the stance to old loved ones doesn't really change. The result is that there is more great, enjoyable music in the world as one gets older... More to choose from. Of course, the amount of passion, at least directed towards certain individual things, doesn't increase, quite the opposite. I probably never had later that kind of passion towards music as I had at my teenagar years.. Especially when NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS ruled my little world..

A lot of these albums may not be nearly so good as their legendary status may suggest.

Some albums grow in stature over time...but many are just hyped, become fashionable to like and over time become a bit like the Emperor's New Clothes....

Everybody claims to appreciate them...but not so many actually do.

‘Hate’ by Neil Young’s Voice isn’t a classic but pretty good.
‘Everything by Pink Floyd’ is probably that boxset from a couple of years ago.
