Yeah Hoppy, some of those session guys... Funk Brothers and Wrecking Crew. They deserve a vote.

Yep! Hal Blaine just passed; those Runaround Sue and Wanderer guys
were very informed and could play sophisticated blues or swing that
Charlie would know more about than possibly the rest of them; tho
i'd be surprised if young Mick didn't take a cut at one of these....
....but the African American guys in NYC were before the Wrecking Crew
had done at least the early Beach Boys stuff by a couple of years I think;
not that anything could ever erase what was done in Hollywood and surrounding neighborhoods during the 60's....i love that stuff....i loved the Hot Rod craze that followed it too; The Jan and Dean records that the Invasion wiped off the charts was spectacular fun in a lot of cases....Brian Wilson's genius
in directing those Wrecking Crews is persevered audio on a lot of really cool
Youtube videos I've seen; then seen again when Hal passed a couple of weeks ago....
for folks like Rockman , way into the sources and first influences,
these players, some of them, had probably been encountered on earlier era stuff. it's been a fun touchstone for me to try to research these NY guys...
wasn't it Jan and Dean at TAMI or one of those?

i like most all the bands people love on this thread....
an embarrassment of riches...lately I've been going back further than this;
but still very rock and roll; or the stuff that it came from...

Is J. Geils on the thread yet? probs...they were terrific and Peter Wolf is still working...def contenders with most any of these bands live imo.

Public Enemy and NWA. NWA in particular was the real "punk rock" of the late 80s. Angry, don't-give-a-shit kids railing against everything.

The Heartbreakers. No question about it. Even when Johnny was a little too high they were like a freight train barreling at you. Jerry Nolan was the best rock and roll drummer ever.

Ok How many of yall heard of Junior Walker and the All -Stars?

Circa 1979 we ( brother) were on 5th Street which is a party street next to East Carolina U. Jr Walker and All stars played a Street corner concert on there, which was probably one of the best ever seen. Most people know this band from the song "Shotgun" Attendance? Maybe 500 very happy folks on a great Sunday afternoon..

Also don't forget Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows - a great blues band from Chicago. Caught them in Durham (underground Bar) jam packed. Yes they played "Too much Bar-B-Que circa 1985

You folks, understandably, probably never heard of these great bands - and that's ok.

"Patti Smith BAND??"

It's The Patti Smith Group. You'll find that name on her albums starting with her second, Radio Ethiopia, and also on the third and fourth, Easter and Wave.

You'll also see it on the photo of the marquee when she opened for the Stones in '78.

Not to get OT within thread-

As there are so many groups to choose from - one song I heard recently form the past was Jackie Blue, which is exceptional, but to this day I cannot figure out what the song is about. Group was Ozark Mountain Devils circa late 70 or early 80s???

Is it about a good looking narcissitic Girl?

Is it a girl on speed?

Or just a lyrical song only where words blend?

Or just a Dreamer-

....

According to Wikipedia, the song was originally about a male drug dealer. Producer Glyn Jones suggested they change the character's gender.

Just what the Wiki article says.
Also learned he wrote a book, which would be interesting considering the number and caliber of bands he worked with.
