We can all see by the bands listed in this Thread that America doesn't really make "good bands".
That's soooo not true.

There are MANY great American bands. If you made lists of the Top 10 American vs. Top 10 British bands, would the British list look more impressive? Probably, but that's only a small part of the story.

Because of the Stones and Beatles, the British bands will always win, but....

If we did not include them, I would say the American and British bands are about even. Expand the list out to top 20 American vs top 20 British bands - that would be interesting!

I personally rate The Lovin' Spoonful as greater than very many of the good bands
mentioned here. Zal Yanofsky Canadian putting snappy country and
wonderful original guitar approach and technique, into a unique
and original act with John Sebastian, session harmonica guy 60's folk scene early on....
...... is almost criminally forgotten, as is Dino Danelli,
the super great and original drummer for The Young Rascals into The Rascals and Bulldog.

Yeah Hoppy, some of those session guys... Funk Brothers and Wrecking Crew. They deserve a vote.

think about it.
the only american rock and roller to make the cover of sgt. pepper.
and THAT record sucked.
but it proved for all time that The Stones are Number l, so ...i dig
the Liverpool beat. i'm thinking of ferrying across the Mercy, in drag.
on the 136th Anniverary of Have YOU sEEN Yo mama...
k, brb, i'm on another thread here brb....

Three Dog Night

Blood Sweat and Tears

I was scrolling down to see if anyone had mentioned Three Dog Night. Glad to see them listed. Hugely popular late '60's through mid '70's.

As for Chicago, I think they were great in their early years, when they were Chicago Transit Authority and still had Peter Cetera and Terry Kath.

You also have the Who and Zeppelin to contend with. It's difficult to match two American bands up against those two behemoths.

But as you said, the further down the list you go, the more they would start to even up.

That would actually be a fascinatin study. I wonder at the end of the day what percentage of Stones covers of American music would be better (a truly subjective term, of course) than their originals? Half? Less than half? More than half?

Is their "My Girl" better than The Tempations'? Is their "Under the Boardwalk" better than The Drifters'? Do they, in general, outdo Buddy Holly, Willie Dixon, or Jimmy Reed? I think we can all agree that they love American music and championed some songwriters who deserved to be championed ... but I'm not sure they played that music better than the American musicians who first recorded the songs.

I would say that's an absolute fact across the board for every tune they covered by American musicians, and they themselves would probably agree with that.
Sure they have some great covers, but I can't think of any that I prefer over what came before. OK, maybe Time is on My Side being the one and only exception.

I wouldnt say better or worse than the Brits (but then, how can you top The Beatles, Stones & Kinks...):

The Doors
Alice Cooper
The Tubes
Blue Öyster Cult
Cheap Trick
Blondie

You can't top the absolute Mt Rushmore that is British rock. The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Kinks. I mean, you just can't.

Having said that, America has some incredible bands, all of which have been mentioned. Found the list Howard Stern had been referencing. Certainly not bad but obviously missing a million great ones:

1. The Beach Boys
2. CCR
3. The Eagles
4. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
5. Lynyrd Skynyrd
6. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
7. ZZ Top
8. Van Halen
9. Aerosmith
10. Heart
11. KISS

Apparently the Allman Brothers were further down. As was Hendrix. Metallica didn't make the list. No idea where bands like GNR, the Dead, The Doors, Nirvana, so many others were. Totally random list, but also hard to deny any of those guys. You could easily make a list of another 20 at least that are worthy of knocking others off of there. I'd potentially argue the Beach Boys are the #1 American rock band of all time. I knew they'd top the list and definitely think they maybe should.

That's a pretty airtight list honestly. I'd knock Heart and KISS off there and replace with the Doors and the Dead.

I personally much prefer Heart/KISS to the Doors/Dead, but the influence and cultural impact of the latter two are just too great to overlook.

It's all a matter of taste and timing isn't it?

What was huge when a person was in their formative years...

I'm 53...

I'll take The Mighty Van Halen every single time!

The Allman Brothers Band

The Muddy Waters Band with Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Otis Spann & Elga Edmonds was pretty great.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band with Mike Bloomfield & Elvin Bishop was also really good.

cool smiley one of the greatest bands ever but 4/5ths Canadian
Canada is NORTH American cool smiley

I was thinking on Ratones Paranoicos, but well, "america" means "The United States of America" and not "America, from Ushuaia to Alaska". It's Just like the "World series", are not "World" series, but played by one country.
When the rest of the World speak of the United States of America, People under Canada and above México must understand they're saying "America"

Wasn't that just what you were doing? Maybe check the subject of this thread, instead of nitpicking other people's choices. I too don't like some of the bands mentioned but I respect other people's posts.
