I can't figure out how the Stones have managed to be so monumentally BAD at picking which songs should make the album, and which songs get relegated to B-sides or the vaults.

Is it too much record company/producer interference, or are they simply just not the best judges of their own material?

I guess they cared a lot more earlier..

In chronological order:

"Dance"
"Indian Girl"
"Down in the Hole"
"She's So Cold"
"All About You"
"Waiting on a Friend"
"Undercover of the Night
"She Was Hot"
"Tie You Up (the Pain of Love)"
"Continental Drift"

If not chronologically, I would have replaced "Dance" by another song from UNDERCOVER. Now as it is, I,ve got to have some balance between songs, and as I would not start with "She's So Cold".

Edit: I forgot to conclude my parentheses.

Yes, where are they?smiling bouncing smiley

But were I instead to suggest a twenty track compilation, I would still have included only the same two songs outside this hypothetical compilation's two dominating albums.

And how would I have found two songs from those two albums still not to feature? Maybe "Let Me Go". However, after that it would have become difficult. I think that I abstain from that effort.

Two albums? Only DW is missing. Let Me Go is on ER, though smiling smiley

It's good to see the love for ER in many of the suggestions here thumbs up

By two dominating albums, I referred to EMOTIONAL RESCUE and UNDERCOVER, to me the latest two of their approximately twelve great studio albums in my reckoning. With two grand songs fetched outside those for my hypothetical compilation, for a 20 track selection of that compilation, there would have to be two songs from the dominating two albums that would not feature. Whereas no songs from DIRTY WORK would qualify.

Okey, I compiled a top ten list out of your opinions. And it looks like this:

1) Undercover of the Night 15 votes
2) She's So Cold 14
3) Start Me Up 12
4) She Was Hot 9
5) Almost Hear You Sigh 8
5) Slave 8
5) Slipping Away 8
5) Waiting on a Friend 8
5) Worried About You 8
10) Dance 7
10) Emotional Rescue 7
10) Mixed Emotions 7
10) One Hit to the Body 7

Draw your own conclusions...

Okey, here are some of mine then:

- Start Me Up, their last big hit, only makes it to number 3 on the list.
- Emotional Rescue, Tattoo You and Steel Wheels are about equally popular albums here.
- She's So Cold makes it to number 2. A surprise to me at least.

Since SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES is based on the Seventies with Sucking being an S, shouldn't this one be something that starts with an E?

And sticking with the Stones' vulgarity, EATING IN THE EIGHTIES can not work but perhaps...

EMBALMED IN THE EIGHTIES
ERUDITION IN THE EIGHTIES

In keeping with the theme of Sucking in the Seventies where live tracks and b-sides were included, I nominate these:

I Think I'm Going Mad (She Was Hot non-lp b-side)
Wish I'd Never Met You (Terrifying non-lp b-side)
Cook Cook Blues (Rock And A Hard Place non lp b-side)
Fancyman Blues (Mixed Emotions non-lp b-side)
Going To A Go-Go (U.S. and U.K live charting live single from Still Life)

well that's a sign of good band that lasts
they've got to suck thru successive decades for the SQ, (suckage quotient)
to get properly established in the cultural blood stream -

SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES ignored 1971, 1972 and 1973's big singles (Brown Sugar, Tumbling Dice, Angie). It's basically an updated TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE, which did have Angie on it but also some great album tracks like Dancing With Mr D, Hand Of Fate, Time Waits For No One and All Down The Line and closed with three BLACK AND BLUE songs.

Perhaps what's very cool about SITS is that it starts off with the last single from SOME GIRLS and its B-side. Both TWFNO and SITS dedicated 3 BAB tracks so this one has 3 UNDERCOVER tracks.

I noticed something else that someone suggested so I changed it to fit better.

Mixed Emotions
Fancy Man Blues
Too Much Blood
I Think I'm Going Mad
She Was Hot
Send It To Me
Sad Sad Sad (Live)
I Just Want To Make Love To You (Live)
Tie Me Up (The Pain Of Love)
Neighbours
Almost Hear You Sigh

By mistake I included Highwire, a song actually recorded january 1991. So I had to rearrange my compilation. Doing this I felt a strong urge to adopt Mr. Jimi´s concept to create a double album (this is indeed more fitting for the Stones´ 80s-output and gives me the opportunity to include four instead of only three glorious Dirty-Work-tracks).

So - without further ado - here´s my personal version of Sucking In the 80s:

Side 1
Undercover Of The Night
Emotional Rescue
She Was Hot
Hold On To Your Hat
Let Me Go

Side 2
Harlem Shuffle
Slave
Going To A Go-Go (live)
I Just Wanna Make Love To You (live)
Start Me Up

Side 3
One Hit To The Body
Break The Spell
Wish I´d Never Met You
Sad Sad Sad
Down In The Hole

Side 4
Tops
Hearts For Sale
Had It With You
Feel On Baby
Sleep Tonight
