John Lee Hooker: The Boogie Man

John Lee Hooker was one of the greatest bluesmen of the 20th century. Born into poverty and racial segregation, he lived through a monumental time in American history.

This is the story of a cultural icon, and his far-reaching impact on popular music, told in his own words and those of his family and closest collaborators.

Interviews with Keith Richards, Van Morrison, Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt and Robert Cray tell how an illiterate man from the rural and impoverished backwaters of the Mississippi Delta influenced their own musical journey. We reveal his part in bringing the Blues to a new generation of young British musicians and how, in turn, those musicians introduced young, mainstream Americans to their own cultural heritage.

His is an astonishing tale of survival and creativity, ingenuity and reinvention - of a man who became a superstar against extraordinary odds. It is also the story of modern America, portrayed through the incredible and touching journey of a singer-songwriter who has left an indelible mark on today’s music.

Got to see him a couple of times. Carnegie Hall, 1986, where he appeared on a bill with about four or five other acts. I expected that he would merely put in an "appearance," but he played a full, one-hour-long, headliner's set, and was, of course, magnificent. I also attended the all-star tribute show in his honor at Madison Square Garden in 1990, where I was treated to the unforgettable sights and sounds of Hooker and Willie Dixon onstage together! That was only a couple of years before Willie died, and you just knew you were experiencing something that would sadly never be repeated. I can still see Willie .... in his white hat, shaking his white cane.

I saw him at the old Fox movie Theater in Venice, CA around 1978 with the Chambers Brothers and Canned Heat which eventually was released as a live album.
Each did their own set (w/Hooker solo sitting on a chair laying down the boogie), and then the remainder of the show was collaborative.

Via discogs.com

"This album is dedicated to Bob “The Bear” Hite, whose idea it was to record an evening with Canned Heat’s close friends; John Lee Hooker, and Lester, George, Willis and Joe Chambers.
The evening turned into a real party, and the audience didn’t leave till 3:30 AM. Bob’s parting salutation summed it all up for then and for now, “don’t forget to Boogie!”

Album Recorded Live at The Fox Venice Theatre, Venice, Calif.
Mixed at Straitahead Studios, La Mesa, Calif".

Really had a sound of his own, you knew that voice immediately, if the guitar didn't give it away.

Lucky enough to see him a couple of times in the mid-80s at a small venue, general admission, so able to get pretty close (1000 seater).

Listen, I don't care what the cat did on the side, I'm not the Judge (well...)
I say he plays good guitar and that's all that counts.
ok, he got a lot of his stuff covering The Animals, that don't make him a hooker, kids, it does not.

Didn't even need three chords ...one was more than enough .

..and who cares how many bars in the verse & chorus...or if we even have a verse & chorus.

i'm in love with you....

Animals cut the heck of out of Hooker's "Maudie."
I have a lot of respect and appreciation for Eric's sound and delivery.
awesome hit maker with incredibly soulful instrument.

hearing House of the Rising Son on AM radio the first times was jaw-dropping.
the entire county thought so; then it's this very short dude with an iffy
haircut on Ed Sullivan and we're all !!!???

i had their entire catalog till they broke and started losing players.
then i went with Eric and War for a bit as well...
i'd seen hi in a local l.a. club that was smallish several times
in the 80's into 90's and he always put out.

but it was a true 'cover' was Maudie, in that Hooker had released, i'm pretty sure not positive, his own versions only a short while before....
....so that's another area of discussion ....
but it rocked and truly rolled with real heat; that was a damn good band.
i guess the bass player quit to manage jimi; and did super well
...but i'm not sure what happened after that; and don't want to open that up on this thread, but it does come to mind what Hilton did after leaving The Animals.

Maudie - The Animals

Eric's spoken intro about John Lee Hooker writing the song.
wait for it.
it breaks open.

and he'll pick up that narration after a drop-off,
then the band picks up the 'thrust' again.
good dynamics, super great Invasion band.
one of the very best no doubt in my house thru the years.

On first hearing these women; i thought it was really powerful.
I appreciate knowing about them, thank you.
It got to me right off the bat; i'm sorta ignoring the stage names but it's cute,
pointed and a good spin on it, imo.
The vocals seemed a little thin; but let's remember i'm not a critic and only heard a little. i stayed with the first number till she let it all hang out and she has a powerful instrument. I'm def gonna listen to more down the line.
i don't know if i'll find it tiring and samey; that's gonna ultimately depend on the songwriting i think, cause on first hearing; the guitars have a lot of authority and i liked it.
