When a church is called "Notre Dame", the word "Dame" - "Lady" refers to Mary, Jesus Christ mother.

Took more than 100 years to build. They started in 1163. One of the first Gothic cathedrals. The Bishop of Paris, Maurice de Sully initiated the project.

So the pictures of Notre Dame sacred to millions untouched for 800 years,
to see it dismantled
kind of a big deal.

It is not completely destroyed of course. Most of the stone structure is intact. So they won't have to build it all over again. The interior is badly damaged though. The glass paintings survived I was informed.

Well, it soudns corny but 1st of all the place needs to dry for several months at least.
Then engineers will begin to assess the damages and how to address them. The money that'll pour in (1 or 2 bil?) will be quite useful but don't hold your breath about visiting ND again soon.
For a start people already argue about the best way to redo the roof. With a wood structure (as it was till yesterday) or with steel or concrete (which don't burn).

they ain't got trees that big anymore which is sorta a statement that sticks
with me in addition to the loss of priceless architecture and treasures
from a thousand years ago.
Here's Van referencing the Cathedral in the first few lines of this deserved classic. (imo).

Across the street from *Cathedral Notre Dame...

Also this his very best band of players ever imo.
the Caledonia Soul Orchestra; each a standout.
Jeff Labes on piano and etcetera...
he'd pick Jeff and some others for the No Guru No Method No Teacher
album, which is incredibly brilliant and warmly soulful beyond compare
imo as well....
....they hand't worked together in a long time, At the time of No Guru...
and it was a short lived reunion but a perfect one imo. "in the garden"
and "Irish heartbeat' and others on there are beautiful.
the one and only time I've been lucky enough to see Van in concert
was in L.A. circa the No Guru LP ...and i was flabbergasted with his
greatness.
this isn't one of the better tracks on a most personally treasured
double live solo LP called "it's too late to stop' which it apparently was,
and still is.

btw:
Go Gramps; glad yer feeling better. stick around Mick...

it can be done in 5 years, the main stone structure survived, any wood structures including internal panelling, the roof and spire will be the largest part of the operation.

at least it will be safer.

Just the loss of the stained glass is heartbreaking. There is so much more, 850 years of history, just gone in hours. I’m sorry for those who never saw it. There will always be those who don’t appreciate it - cynics who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Some of these pre-teens know nothing of history, of the place Notre Dame occupies in French history, art, faith. It is iconic and has been appreciated by countless millions over the years.

In today's complicated world of revisionism and denial, it's important for young people to see and understand the meaning of architecture, art and history and its importance to current and future generations of people.

My least favorite element of the building are the flying buttresses. But those flying buttresses may just have saved the walls from collapsing. It's amazing to see the pictures of interior and exterior scenes of surviving architectural elements and religious scenes. It's good for the people of faith and around the world to be shown some very intimate pictures of the damage, loss, and survival so quickly by the French officials. Americans are always quick to declare a building unsafe and have the contractors onsite while a building is still smoldering with excavators and bulldozers waiting to demolish the building and collect a fat check.

Yes that's the core question. The sole valuable solution imo is a faithful replica of what was lost. Which means using large beams of oak, lead sheets, bronze and other classic materials.
Some architects have said titanium steel or concrete could be used, which is unreasonable to use an understatement.

very sad this did happen.. but to make it optimistic: the main building is still there, most artifacts were saved!

the tower that fell down is not from the 12th century, but from the 19th.

it will take 5 to 15 years to bring the Notre Dame back to the old state, but its not lost!

(still feeling your sadness though Paris)

They need to put a blue-ribbon panel together to oversee the restoration. If they leave it up to the politicians and construction companies (the way most civic projects are handled), they'll spend $10 billion on turning it into a $1 billion festive arcade of greed. They will install premium sky boxes, upscale restaurants and sell the naming rights to the highest corporate bidder. Nobody wants to see a 21st Century "Notre Viagra" palace.

Those flying buttresses may have saved the walls from collapsing before the cathedral was even finished being built: (Flying buttress)

"The Notre Dame Cathedral Paris didn’t originally have flying buttresses included in its design. But after the construction of the cathedral began, the thinner walls (popularized in the Gothic style) grew ever higher and stress fractures began to occur as the walls pushed outward. The cathedral’s architects, in an effort to fix the problem, built supports around the outside walls, and later additions continued the pattern. The was among the first buildings in the world to use the flying buttress (arched exterior supports)".

As for me, I remember way back when as a young art student studying the history of architecture and memorizing thousands of terms - the 'flying buttress' being one.
While I may have forgotten up to 50% or more of those terms over the years as architecture wasn't my focus ha, the 'flying buttress' is embedded, and will always have a place in my heart.
Combining a practical necessity (strength and support) with decorative elements (elegance and majesty), the ingenuity of those original designers cannot be underestimated.

And to see them up close...the immensity of their size is truly mind boggling.

Thinking about it now, The Flying Buttresses might make a good name for a band!

Interesting that there's already around a billion dollars ready or promised to rebuild it. That seems like way more than is necessary, and perhaps some of it could be used to pay the Stones to play a 100-day residency for its grand reopening in 2024. smileys with beer

Except that the Mount Rushmore faces are the whole monument. The frame is only a part of the structure that most people don't see, unless they pay for an upstair visit. I don't really have an opinion, i love the idea of rebuilding the frame like it was, but there are also safety issues. Anyway i understand your point of you, but i hear a lot of people who want Notre Dame to be restored the exact same way it was. The way it was when? There has been a lot of changes through the centuries.
It's funny that the iconic chimeras that so much people instantly associate with Notre Dame didn't exist before the 19th century and Viollet Le Duc work.
