Can't Find My Way Home - Bonnie Raitt & Lowell George & John Hammond Jr & Freebo
[www.youtube.com]

from a radio broadcast in 1972; it's a very sweet vibe. the playing doesn't start till
almost 3 minutes in; but somehow the atmospherics and little comments
back and forth as they tune and decide what to play and the key and etc...
has it's own charm; and when I listen to this, I usually start from the
beginning, tho I considered cueing up for fans who might like these players,
I didn't, but those who just want the music can dig in close to the 3 minute
mark; it's a true 'jam' and not a rehearsed thing.

Frank Zappa/The Mothers Of Invention - Trouble Every Day (1966)
*originally dubbed "The Watts Riot Song"

Well I'm about to get upset from watchin' my TV
Been checkin' out the news until my eyeballs fail to see
I mean they say that every day is just another rotten mess
And when it's gonna change, my friend, is anybody's guess

So I'm watchin' and I'm waitin', hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin', every time I hear 'em sayin'
That there's no way to delay that trouble comin' every day
No way to delay that trouble comin' every day

Wednesday I watched the riots, I seen the cops out on the street
Watched 'em throwin' rocks and stuff and chokin' in the heat
Listened to reports about the whisky passin' 'round
Seen the smoke and fire and the market burnin' down
Watched while everybody on his street would take a turn
To stomp and smash and bash and crash and slash and bust and burn

And I'm watchin' and I'm waitin', hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin', every time I hear 'em sayin'
That there's no way to delay that trouble comin' every day
No way to delay that trouble comin' every day

Well you can cool it, you can heat it, 'cause baby, I don't need it
Take your TV tube and eat it and all that phony stuff on sports
And all the unconfirmed reports, you know I watched that rotten box
Until my head began to hurt
From checkin' out the way the newsmen say they get the dirt
Before the guys on channel so-and-so and further they assert

That any show they'll interrupt to bring you news if it comes up
They say that if the place blows up, they'll be the first to tell
'Cause the boys they got downtown are workin' hard and doin' swell
And if anybody gets the news before it hits the street
They say that no one blabs it faster, their coverage can't be beat
And if another woman driver gets machine-gunned from her seat
They'll send some joker with a brownie and you'll see it all complete

So I'm watchin' and I'm waitin', hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin', every time I hear 'em sayin'
That there's no way to delay that trouble comin' every day
No way to delay that trouble comin' every day

Hey you know something people?
I'm not black but there's a whole lots a times, I wish I could say I'm not white

Well, I seen the fires burnin' and the local people turnin'
On the merchants and the shops who used to sell their brooms and mops
And every other household item, watch a mob just turn and bite 'em
And they say it served 'em right because a few of them were white

And it's the same across the nation, black and white discrimination
They're yellin', "You can't understand me," and all that other jazz they hand me
In the papers and TV and all that mass stupidity
That seems to grow more every day, each time you hear some nitwit say
He wants to go and do you in 'cause the color of your skin
Just don't appeal to him, no matter if it's black or white
Because he's out for blood tonight

You know we gotta sit around at home and watch this thing begin
But I bet there won't be many live to see it really end
'Cause the fire in the street ain't like the fire in the heart
And in the eyes of all these people, don't you know that this could start

On any street in any town in any state if any clown
Decides that now's the time to fight for some ideal he thinks is right
And if a million more agree, there ain't no Great Society
As it applies to you and me, our country isn't free

And the law refuse to see if all that you can ever be
Is just a lousy janitor unless your uncle owns the store
You know that five in every four just won't amount to nothin' more
Than watch the rats go across the floor and make up songs about being poor

Blow your harmonica, son...

Frank was ahead of his time telling it like it is - another one along the same lines from 1973:

Frank Zappa - I'm the Slime

I am gross and perverted
I'm obsessed 'n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little has changed
I'm the tool of the Government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
But you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicious
With the stuff that I say
I'm the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I'm the slime oozin' out
From your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don't need you
Don't go for help . . . no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

That's right, folks . . .
Don't touch that dial

Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin' along on your livin' room floor

I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go

Just read this tidbit via wiki regarding the recording of the above tune:

For the recording of this song (and most of the Overnite Sensation LP), Zappa used Ike Turner's Bolic Studios in L.A.. By virtue of this arrangement, Turner offered up the use of the Ikettes (including Ike's then wife, Tina Turner), to sing backup vocals for various songs on Over-Nite Sensation including "I'm the Slime". Ike Turner insisted that Zappa pay the Ikettes only $25 per song, to which he reluctantly agreed.
After hearing one of the recordings in the studio, Ike exclaimed, "What is this shit?" and later insisted that Tina and the Ikettes not be credited on the album.

Victoria by the Kinks.

This is the "karaoke" version, but it sounds like it's just the sound from one of the speakers.

In any event, you can really hear the guitars well and they sounds like they're having a blast in the studio playing which is why I love it so much.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

I always thought that song was inspired by Canned Heat's "Going Up the Country," both the guitar and Ray's vocal. It's a better song, though.
