Gillian Welch - Elvis Presley Blues
Dave Rawlings, a truly great guitarist and harmony singer, and soulful cat,
accompanies her as usual; or vice versa.
She's an elegant category all her own imo.
i think of her as a Laura Nyro type original genius; not in sound
or style at ALL, but in heart and soul and an original, natural amalgamation
of American musics; maybe as much as young Dolly; who also caught my ear
when still with with Porter Wagoner; I think it was 1967 or earlier when i first
heard her; I had her first solo albums in the 70's and they were great songs.
country workup of I Will Always Love You, a song she would NOT let Elvis have,
cause the Colonel demanded co-publishing as writer and everything else if he cut your song....she tells a story about it really making her miserable but she just couldn't do it, the MICK in her, so to speak...respectfully intended; she's quite an elegant woman...not knowing at the time that Whitney would smash it, after being born and everything, up to the humongous hit that it was across movies radio and everything else....
now why am i talking about Dolly while listening to Gillian and Dave?
Why? Because, as Jimmy Dodd used to say, 'because we like you,'
He was head Mouseketeer and partly responsible for Annette Funicello.
IF YOU DON'T HAVE HER PICTURE DISC, DO NOT KNOCK ME FOR THIS.
