Is there a Rolling Stones Open G Songs Book Available?
Posted by: midimannz ()

Hello Friends, I'm a guitar player and would like to tune one of my guitars to open G and try some Stones songs. Is there a book or site to assist with the chord fingerstyle anywhere?

Thanks again.

This has been asked before on this forum. Try a search - make sure to set the dates to one year or even more.

Great idea for a thread! I started playing some in open G thanks to Rocksmith's Stones pack, and that video with the three songs is fantastic for anyone trying to get into open G for the first time. I hope you can find the other threads and bump them (I have a terrible time using the search functions for this site.)

IIRC, we just recently had a similar thread, but it was geared more towards which songs were played in Open G (in the studio or live).

If you prioritize that list to your own personal taste and then go down that list, one-by-one on YouTube, you'll get better results than any book could give you.

There are errors with some things in the past, like Rocks Off - to my knowledge, there are only standard tuned guitars on that track - why would Keith play in open G when the song is in E?

Keith playing LSTNT in open G... in 1981.

Mick wrote Brown Sugar.

It just goes on and on.

I don’t know people need tab books. Just figure it out for yourself.

A helpful reply to my post woulda been a better read for me... I only asked a question

Keith told me (yes in Paris 1985) to replace the A string with the E to get a bigger sound so put the A string in the trash, and if possible play on two amps, one crunchy and one clear. That the sound you can hear on stage.

Is that leaving an open space where the A string is, replacing it with an E (and leaving the E space open), or having two E's?

Thanks, I will try this. I have two teles, one set up like a Macawber . It’s time to impress Mrs Midimannz, and for the other dudes, this post is called 'tell me' right, not 'critical me'?.. It's just a question I'm asking?

Hello Midimannz! If I could give you an advice? Just try for yourself to figure it all out! It is such a Discovery, like Learning a new language. I started to learn the secrets in 1999 and I remember very fondly, how songs just started to make sense in how you play them. Try it, it's really what Life is all about.

Put the low E-string where the A-string is supposed to be. 5 strings, 3 fingers and 1 @#$%& is what it takes! smoking smiley

There are no tab books dedicated to open g.

The closest you can get is the Hal Leonard Exile tab book (8 open G guitar songs), some mistakes here and there but it is a valid starting point.

Honky Tonk Brown Sugar and Start Me Up are on almost all Stones greatest hits tab books

In any case, as many have said, once you understand how open g tuning works, at least the basic rhythm part is quite easy to sort out by ear.

You have to get good. This is how you start. Without tab. How do you think that the tab tanscribers figured it out. Tascam makes a cd device where you can slow down the CD with changing the pitch. All the way down to half speed.

I've never tried this (MY Tele has all 6 strings and to me it sounds fine) but I think you would tune that string DOWN from A to G. So you'd have G-D-G-B-D.

I agree with figuring things out for yourself, including learning instruments. In the past few years I've taught myself several instruments (saz, oud, ronrocco, mandolin, and others) and it truly is a joy when you reach the "A-HA!" moment). Best of luck!

I would recommend these two magazines: How To Play Guitar (Rhythm)w/CD,Vol.3,No. 1, Miller Freeman, Inc. 1996 & Guitar World w/CD June 2010. There are several books about open tuning. Most have only a few pages covering open G. However, this Australian title looks interesting: “The Open Tuning Book For Guitar: 312 Chords For Open D and Open G”. Study Keith’s palette of open G chords, and pay particular attention to how he resolves the dissonant ones. This will give you an idea of his chord progression style. Remember the CAGED system you learned in standard tuning. For open G soloing in major/minor pentatonic you’ll have to adjust for open G by moving the notes on strings 1,5 and 6 two frets higher. Finally, practice string muting with your fretting hand.

No problem. After all it’s just one and a half step.

You won't put intolerable stress on the neck = warp it?
Another possibility is to take a low E string of a much lower gauge than the rest of the set. Keith favors 10-46 gauge but it's possible that he asks his guitar tech to borrow a low E from a 09-42 set?

Ernie Ball made special Keith stringsets some years ago. They were 11s to 42. Either way these minor changes won’t do damage to the guitar. Worst case - the trussrod needs a little tweak.
