What's the point answering 1962-1986? That's 24 years. Why not answer 1962-2019 to be on the safe side?

You're right R. There is no point. But if you bother to answer - why not be a little more specific? But that's just my view, take it or leave it...

I have several favorite eras:

1962-1964. a very interesting period, starting a band as young people with lots of influences by others.

1968-1974. In my opinion, their prime years. releasing great albums, great songs and being a dangerous, sexy band. really loved Mick taylors guitar playing in those years.

1976-1982. bought my first album in 1976, saw them my first time. dangerous times with Keefs arrest, Some Girls album and the outtakes from Tattoo You.

After that there were several good periods imo. Loved, and still do DW.
But, the dangerous times era stopped, after DW.

With SW , they became the Las Vegas Stones. Sterile, clean production work.
the lack of friendship between Keef n Mick. etc etc.

The 2017 n 2018 gigs i saw were amazing and beyond my expectation. Have seen the Stones about 40 times since 1976 and love them to bits.

Hope to catch them again, maybe South America or Europe in the next years.
Have given up hope about the new album.

Ciao

I'd have to come at it from the other end; as in the lesser favorite eras, because everything else is right up there.
I think it would only be '89 on era that I am not too fond of.

Jimmy Miller years are tops.
And the 70's too.

From Live POV, the '69 US tour started something incredible. The slightly sinister '70 tour where the horns appeared.
And IMO the zenith was Australia '73. Europe '73 wobbled a bit because Preston may have been a liability.

Is there an agreement on what defines a period, if so, what are the choices?

Easy, the 60s.the original band was never outdone in my book.i think it escapes most fans that Brian Jones played on every Stones album released in the 1960s and was with the band for the entire decade outside of the very last few months.
Beginning with England’s Newest Hitmakers and ending with Let it Bleed, that’s the Stones for me.
Beggars and Let it Bleed were better records than Sticky and Exile(find me a Gimme Shelter or Sympathy on the latter two)and 12x5, December’s Children,Aftermath and even Satanic Majesties were better than the rest of the records from the 1970s.
So for me,The Original Stones were the best.

I find this question very difficult to answer...and I also think I'd need to split my answer into favourite periods for the live & recorded band.

On record I think I'd have to go for the post Brian/Taylor period.

Live, it would probably have to be the years with Ronnie and Bill on board...

...but I love the live band with Mr Jones on bass too....Oh bugger . No idea ...I like all of it confused smiley

Yes, the era from "Let It Bleed" to "Tatoo You".

(The 12 year period from 1969 to 1981)

My preferred era is the Decca era and I think it's fair to say that if none of the other eras existed, the Stones would still be widely seen as the second best British band of the 1960s.
Their run of singles from Come On to Honky Tonk Women is only matched or bettered by the (largely) non-album singles runs of the Moptops and The Kinks.
While they only started coming up with masterpiece LP's from Beggars onwards, the UK albums up to that point have plenty of merit and in particular, the debut and Aftermath are hot representations of what the band was up to.
Factor in their concert appearances, media appearances, cultural impact and musical influence and the Decca era would have left a substantial legacy even if they'd split up when the Decca contract expired.
They could easily play a concert featuring only tracks from this period and knock everyone out.
What a desperate shame that ABKCO and the band seem completely incapable of celebrating this period properly with the kind of archival releases it deserves.
Beatles fans get the White Album deluxe and Stones fans get a blu-ray Circus reissue with bonus John Lennon content and (possibly) the wrong aspect ratio.

why the 3rd December 1965 ? Keith nearly died ! He probably thinks it was funny in retrospect but at the time everyone was freaking out apart from Andrew who was kind of freaking out because Gered Mankowitz wasn't taking photos of it.

It's just a quick date I nabbed from somewhere, it's meant to represent when the sessions for Aftermath started.

19th May 1968 is when No Expectations was recorded at the session before Brian was busted on 21st.

There was a moment on Ole Ole where none of 'em, not even you know who, made an era. Personally, that's my fave.

Favorite live era: 1968-1982; as much as they matured as a live band starting in 1989, I think they lost that sloppy/dirty sound that made them sound so great.

Favorite studio era: Obviously 1968-1972. Nobody in the history of music produced absolute masterpieces like Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers & Exile. A close second would be 1978-1981. There was an all around "fun" sound that came from that era. Some Girls, Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You act as a trio like the albums from The Golden Era.

68-72 and then Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon. I also love Keith's solo albums and much of Mick's solo albums.
