Hi Georgelicks, I'm assuming the triangle with 2 next to Hot Rocks means double platinum? What would the symbol next to Honk be, which is the same symbol next to Back In Black?

Honk is certified GOLD in the UK (sales over 100,000), for some strange reason Back In Black appears with the same symbol but the album was certified double platinum in 2018.

Satisfaction is certified GOLD in the UK (sales over 400,000 only in the digital era 1994-2022) but it shows nothing in the OOC site.

Well, UK population is about 1/5 of the US, so 100k gold in UK is 500k in US. Also, I'm surprised Back In Black is only double platinum in the UK? It's sold over 23 million in US and I'm sure well over a million in Canada.

I think you could make an argument that the competition would be even higher now than before, to be in that top 200, for newer artists. They're competing with more artists as they don't need to produce physical copies, and, the older artists that for up to 60 years just won't go away and clog up that top 200.

I find it staggering that Drake can be number 2 behind just the Beatles, and maybe even more surprising is Eminem at #3.

Because were not talking about overall sales in terms of units or downloads, which would arguably increase with the increases in population, but relative placings in the top 200 as measured weekly.

Thanks for your insight. No, I'm the same. I certainly don't knowingly know any of Drake's recordings. Well, aside from a duet with Rihanna.

Eminem was absolutely huge in the early 00's, so his sales and positioning doesn't particularly surprise me. He must've been the biggest-seller, globally, for a few years back in the day.

The Beatles hold the top spot.

A band that broke up in April of 1970 officially, their last true album in 1969 but one after they broke up in 1970, is still number one.

I like some of what I've heard of Drake but I couldn't tell you the name of one song.

Some Girls’ success interests me. I’ve long being under the impression that it’s evergreen popularity is very much stateside. It surely sold well in Europe and the U.K., yet, for me, it is their most U.S. centric work, and that really plays into its success there: Shattered, Far Away Eyes and the disco grooves of Miss You are oh so American. Beast of Burden is a track that seems to mean more to Americans, too.

Fascinating as always, Doxa. I just wonder why the Stones seem to a lag a little behind some of their 70's contemporaries: Elton, Zeppelin, Floyd, and so on. I guess the Stones' strongest suit is their longevity as a live-act. Their album-sales seem to lack those really big numbers of, say, a Dark Side of The Moon, or Led Zeppelin IV.

I've never understood how record sales in the UK are so low compared to the US. Is London and the rest of the UK really not that interested? The Stones have never sold one million copies of an album in the UK?

That's ridiculous. And pathetic.

Well, as the home country I agree there should be a disproportionately higher level of support for such an unmatched band.

One mitigating factor is the population in the UK is about 20% that of the US, so sales in US should be 5X that of the UK, purely based on relative population size.

Oh, they have, I'm sure. Their fan-base here is huge. They wouldn't sell-out over here, otherwise.

I don’t find the Stones’ U.K. sales to be unimpressive. In reality, regarding records, they’ve sold steadily, and consistently, since 1963. Many of their albums reach the top-spot, and 8 of their singles have reached #1 The fact that they haven’t sold as many records as some of their contemporaries from yesteryear isn’t unique to the U.K. They haven’t sold as well, comparatively, in the U.S., too. Even a country artist, such as Garth Brookes, has probably sold more records in the U.S.A. than the Stones, I’m sure.

As I think I’ve said before: the Stones’ true forte is the live stage. They wouldn’t be selling-out Hyde Park and Anfield if they weren’t loved.

One thing with the Stones is that they've always been a bit like "Marmite ".

Folks either really like them or don't like them very much at all.


...So you don't tend to get many sales to casual listeners who like them just enough to buy the odd album.

This goes right back to the early days .

When I was five or six years old in the early to mid sixties I recall that everybody , my Grandma and Grandad, aunties and uncles included, liked the Beatles.

But they all said that those Rolling Stones were horrible and made a right racket...except for one auntie and one cousin, who absolutley worshipped them .

I'm not sure where he stands currently, but I know at one time Garth was trying to surpass Elvis as the best selling solo artist here stateside, ever. He repackaged his albums many different times and sold dirt-cheap boxsets in an attempt to do so. I recall reading that the sale of these boxsets (let's say for arguments sake that they contained 5 CDs), actually counted as 5 sales, instead of 1, overly inflating his numbers!!! He did then take a very long sabbatical, and in my mind, has never come close to that level of early success again.

Yeah. I definitely saw some dirt-cheap Garth box sets at the bargain store Ollie's recently. Almost giving them away.

And anyone else find it weird that Emotional Rescue has sold more in the US than Beggar's Banquet?
