Some chart activity for the Stones in the UK this week:

Hot Rocks, Honk and Sticky Fingers in the UK Top 200 Albums chart:

Also in the UK Singles chart:

Paint It Black, Gimme Shelter, Sympathy For The Devil, Wild Horses and Satisfaction are in the Top 200

Hi Georgelicks, I'm assuming the triangle with 2 next to Hot Rocks means double platinum? What would the symbol next to Honk be, which is the same symbol next to Back In Black?

Honk is certified GOLD in the UK (sales over 100,000), for some strange reason Back In Black appears with the same symbol but the album was certified double platinum in 2018.

Satisfaction is certified GOLD in the UK (sales over 400,000 only in the digital era 1994-2022) but it shows nothing in the OOC site.

You can look all the UK certifications here:

I guess I'll never understand those certifications given the amount of people in the UK. Are there that many people that DON'T buy albums/singles? Ever?

Well, UK population is about 1/5 of the US, so 100k gold in UK is 500k in US. Also, I'm surprised Back In Black is only double platinum in the UK? It's sold over 23 million in US and I'm sure well over a million in Canada.

CRASH! Is there nothing I can say, nothing I can do.

Totally agree! Some Girls was huge and then releasing side 2 of Tattoo You was mesmerizing. I couldn’t get enough of Tops and Worried About You…still can’t. smiling smiley

This is really interesting. Thanks Doxa and all the other contributors. I find it fascinating and I love that they have old songs in the charts now.

I’d be curious to know how many physical sales Drake has made; including downloads from iTunes. Considering his millennial/generation Z demographic, it must surely all be from streaming! I know it all counts, though.

I think you could make an argument that the competition would be even higher now than before, to be in that top 200, for newer artists. They're competing with more artists as they don't need to produce physical copies, and, the older artists that for up to 60 years just won't go away and clog up that top 200.

I find it staggering that Drake can be number 2 behind just the Beatles, and maybe even more surprising is Eminem at #3.

Because were not talking about overall sales in terms of units or downloads, which would arguably increase with the increases in population, but relative placings in the top 200 as measured weekly.

I'm sure I know some Drake songs to hear, but I couldn't tell you the name of even one.

Thanks for your insight. No, I'm the same. I certainly don't knowingly know any of Drake's recordings. Well, aside from a duet with Rihanna.

Eminem was absolutely huge in the early 00's, so his sales and positioning doesn't particularly surprise me. He must've been the biggest-seller, globally, for a few years back in the day.

The Beatles hold the top spot.

A band that broke up in April of 1970 officially, their last true album in 1969 but one after they broke up in 1970, is still number one.

I like some of what I've heard of Drake but I couldn't tell you the name of one song.

Some Girls’ success interests me. I’ve long being under the impression that it’s evergreen popularity is very much stateside. It surely sold well in Europe and the U.K., yet, for me, it is their most U.S. centric work, and that really plays into its success there: Shattered, Far Away Eyes and the disco grooves of Miss You are oh so American. Beast of Burden is a track that seems to mean more to Americans, too.

Home sweet home

By request I put here the United Kingdom album sales chart we discussed in No 2 thread a few days ago. It is from 2016, plus BLUE & LONESOME based on estimation in this thread. Only proper studio albums included.

1. EXILE ON MAIN STREET 875 000
2. THE ROLLING STONES 840 000
3. STICKY FINGERS 800 000
4. LET IT BLEED 725 000
5. THE ROLLING STONES NO 2 680 000
6. AFTERMATH 600 000
7. SOME GIRLS 425 000
8. TATTOO YOU 400 000
9. BLUE&LONESOME 350 000-400 000
10. BEGGARS BANQUET 350 000
11. OUT OF OUR HEADS 350 000
12. VOODOO LOUNGE 320 000
13. EMOTIONAL RESCUE 300 000
14. GOATS HEAD SOUP 260 000
15. BLACK&BLUE 225 000
16. BETWEEN THE BUTTONS 200 000
17. UNDERCOVER 200 000
18. THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES 175 000
19. IT'S ONLY ROCK'N'ROLL 175 000
20. STEEL WHEELS 150 000
21. DIRTY WORK 140 000
22. A BIGGER BANG 140 000
23. BRIDGES TO BABYLON 125 000

Notes:
- the sales for new editions of GOATS HEAD SOUP and TATTOO YOU are not included, but we are talking about a couple of ten thousands there, so no dramatic changes there.
- the best selling UK albums are compilations. For example, HOT ROCKS, not released until 1990 in UK, has sold over million copies. The sales of FORTY LICKS are about the same (unfortunately I don't have exact statistics from other compilations).
- the success of BLUE&LONESOME is truely phenomenal in UK, selling like the albums did in the good old albums era.
- like pointed out in that other thread, the success of the Stones at their home country in the early days is exceptional in compared to the rest of the world.

Fascinating as always, Doxa. I just wonder why the Stones seem to a lag a little behind some of their 70's contemporaries: Elton, Zeppelin, Floyd, and so on. I guess the Stones' strongest suit is their longevity as a live-act. Their album-sales seem to lack those really big numbers of, say, a Dark Side of The Moon, or Led Zeppelin IV.

I've never understood how record sales in the UK are so low compared to the US. Is London and the rest of the UK really not that interested? The Stones have never sold one million copies of an album in the UK?

That's ridiculous. And pathetic.

No wonder they love the United States.

Well, as the home country I agree there should be a disproportionately higher level of support for such an unmatched band.

One mitigating factor is the population in the UK is about 20% that of the US, so sales in US should be 5X that of the UK, purely based on relative population size.

This week the Stones crosses the 2000-week mark on The Billboard 200, the 4th artist on Billboard's history to reach it.

Hot Rocks spends its 15th week on 2022 on the chart (at #173) and 386 weeks overall.

Most weeks on The Billboard 200 chart (all time)

1. The Beatles — 3,197 weeks
2. Drake — 2,296 weeks
3. Eminem — 2,162 weeks
4. The Rolling Stones — 2,000 weeks
5. Elton John — 1,974 weeks
6. Taylor Swift — 1,968 weeks
7. Michael Jackson — 1,960 weeks
8. Elvis Presley — 1,902 weeks
9. Barbra Streisand — 1,884 weeks
10. Pink Floyd — 1,649 weeks

Taylor Swift's on track to reach the 2000 week mark in less than 2 months, she has 4-6 albums each week among the Top 200, Drake's has 5-7 each week and can catch up with the Beatles in less than 5 years.

I am predicting right now that when all is said and done Taylor Swift will be #1 by a long shot.

Her fan base is pretty damn large and she seems to be adding new fans all the time. Can’t really find fault with someone who writes her own music. Haven’t heard her new album yet to know if it’s any good or not.

I don’t find the Stones’ U.K. sales to be unimpressive. In reality, regarding records, they’ve sold steadily, and consistently, since 1963. Many of their albums reach the top-spot, and 8 of their singles have reached #1 The fact that they haven’t sold as many records as some of their contemporaries from yesteryear isn’t unique to the U.K. They haven’t sold as well, comparatively, in the U.S., too. Even a country artist, such as Garth Brookes, has probably sold more records in the U.S.A. than the Stones, I’m sure.

As I think I’ve said before: the Stones’ true forte is the live stage. They wouldn’t be selling-out Hyde Park and Anfield if they weren’t loved.

One thing with the Stones is that they've always been a bit like "Marmite ".

Folks either really like them or don't like them very much at all.

...So you don't tend to get many sales to casual listeners who like them just enough to buy the odd album.

This goes right back to the early days .

When I was five or six years old in the early to mid sixties I recall that everybody , my Grandma and Grandad, aunties and uncles included, liked the Beatles.

But they all said that those Rolling Stones were horrible and made a right racket...except for one auntie and one cousin, who absolutley worshipped them .

I'm not sure where he stands currently, but I know at one time Garth was trying to surpass Elvis as the best selling solo artist here stateside, ever. He repackaged his albums many different times and sold dirt-cheap boxsets in an attempt to do so. I recall reading that the sale of these boxsets (let's say for arguments sake that they contained 5 CDs), actually counted as 5 sales, instead of 1, overly inflating his numbers!!! He did then take a very long sabbatical, and in my mind, has never come close to that level of early success again.

Yeah. I definitely saw some dirt-cheap Garth box sets at the bargain store Ollie's recently. Almost giving them away.

And anyone else find it weird that Emotional Rescue has sold more in the US than Beggar's Banquet?

This week the Stones crosses the 2000-week mark on The Billboard 200, the 4th artist on Billboard's history to reach it.

Hot Rocks spends its 15th week on 2022 on the chart (at #173) and 386 weeks overall.

Most weeks on The Billboard 200 chart (all time)

1. The Beatles — 3,197 weeks
2. Drake — 2,296 weeks
3. Eminem — 2,162 weeks
4. The Rolling Stones — 2,000 weeks
5. Elton John — 1,974 weeks
6. Taylor Swift — 1,968 weeks
7. Michael Jackson — 1,960 weeks
8. Elvis Presley — 1,902 weeks
9. Barbra Streisand — 1,884 weeks
10. Pink Floyd — 1,649 weeks

Taylor Swift's on track to reach the 2000 week mark in less than 2 months, she has 4-6 albums each week among the Top 200, Drake's has 5-7 each week and can catch up with the Beatles in less than 5 years.

I am predicting right now that when all is said and done Taylor Swift will be #1 by a long shot.

I know her guitarist. Taylor went to the high school just a few minutes from my house.
