Liam Howlett, who formed the group in 1990, confirmed his death was a suicide. “The news is true, I can’t believe I’m saying this but our brother Keith took his own life over the weekend,” he wrote on Instagram. “I’m shell shocked, @#$%& angry, confused and heart broken ..... r.i.p brother Liam”.

so very sad. Another great rock star has killed themselves.

let it be known, The Prodigy were a mighty fine live act.

I bear witness to the fact that they blew Oasis off the stage at Knebworth 1996... boy did the Gallagher brothers choose the wrong support act that day.

Rest in peace, Keith F

Oh no!
The Prodigy were about the only electronic music group I ever really got into.
RIP

I wasn't a huge Prodigy fan but what an energetic performer and iconic image he had. By all accounts a lovely man and always accessible. Far too young to pass.

Another gone on that tragic Rock n Roll path. sad smiley

That is a shame. Firestarter and Smack My Bitch Up were HUGE when I was in college. RIP.

Damn...sad.
I bought the album with Firestarter on it when it was released, and used to play it very loud at the apartment I lived in which guaranteed annoyed the neighbors within a thousand yard radius.
Haven't listened to Firestarter in ages until now, and it's just as obnoxious (in a good way) as it was back then- even the video is a bit creepy: Firestarter

RIP Keith Flint

Wow very sad to hear this. True pioneers of their genre and made some classic stuff.

I used to be absolutely anti-electronic music until I went to see a free The Prodigy concert in the French alps sometime around 1997-98. Really good show!

i was never into techno and electronical music, but prodigy were awesome! punk energy and wild beats - what a mixture! a very unique sounding band and the soundtrack to my 20ies; RIP keith flint!

V sad this one - Prodigy seem to have been more accessible to rock/punk fans than most electronic/dance acts. Genuinely engaging and talented frontman, and the fat of the land was one of the stand out albums of the 90s (well for those of us in our 20s at that point and growing up in the UK anyway). Sad stuff

Quite staggered by this, outwardly on top of the world, Keith had only literally competed in his local 5k Parkrun, clocking a PB on the Saturday morning. Goodness knows what he was going through inside.

He had just completed A 5 KM park run, in a time that was his personal best? (I think)

RIP Keith..... What a frontman you were.

I have never liked dance/rave music, but I was once persuaded by my brother to go with him to a gig by The Prodigy in the 90s.

The gig showed me how powerful live music can be. Despite the fact that they were playing a genre of music I disliked, the performance and energy of both the band and crowd absolutely blew me away.

Saddened by this: I used to love electronica as a uni student, as well as rock. The Prodigy were great, and clearly influenced Jeff Beck on What Mama Said, and the Who Else album.

5Km park runs kill my blues too; a pity they couldn't kill what was gnawing away at Keith Flint.

Anyone that feels unhappy should go for a run, or read Bella Mackie's Jog On, or her blog in The Guardian newspaper.

..."I'm the trouble starter, punkin' instigator..."

That song made an instant impression on me. Played frequently on MTV (Europe). Do you remember MTV and music videos?
It was wicked (as the English say [or used to say]). It went straight up to number 2 on the Swedish charts. I wonder how it did in the USA.
Did they ban it?

..."I'm the firestarter, twisted firestarter
I'm the one infected, twisted animator..."

The video was played very frequently on mtv in the US - that's how I heard of it. (I also posted video in my original post).
As for radio, it was never banned. Probably played alot on independent/college radio stations, but not much on mainstream radio stations...
Looking now and see it only made it to #30 on the billboard Hot 100, and #24 Billboard Alternative songs in the US.
