Brian's first dulcimer.

This was made by Bel Kimby and he bought it at McCabes Guitar Shop in Santa monica, USA in 1965. This was used for the recording of Lady Jane and I Am Waiting.

It was also most likely used for the recording of the Mord Und Totschlag soundtrack.

Small room, with great sound and plenty of cool instruments to check out.
Wish I had known of the Brian connection.. love the place even more now.

Struggling to find anything about Bel Kimby who supposedly built Brian's first dulcimer. Maybe they worked there?

Any help would be appreciated.

McCabes in Santa Monica...brings back so many memories...
I grew up in Santa Monica, and to think when I was two years old in '65 Brian was just a stones throw away!
I saw many shows there back in the mid' '70s/early '80s (along with the Santa Monica Civic)- such a cool place, and thankfully it's still there!

As for Bel Kimby, searched to find anything, but to no avail.

Looking at the second pic in thread, it looks like an Appalachian dulcimer w/heart shaped cutouts as pictured on this wiki page: Appalchian dulcimer
Based on that, I found this book pdf you might be interested in that's filled with history, photo's, etc. I briefly skimmed through it (203 pages!).
I zeroed in on the chapter titled "Dulcimer Makers of the Folk Revival Transition", but no mention of Bel Kimby that I saw.

MCabes in Santa Monica is still alive and well. Saw Jim Kweskin and Meredith Axelrod there recently.

The dulcimer on display at the R&R Hall of fame, used to just sit, unexplained in the small Stones exhibit they had in 2005, last time I was there. They also have a mellotron that just says, 'Used by the Rolling Stones'. Not really. Only Brian 'used' it.

Also, it is a good moment to put some of the spotlights on Brian. After all his 77th birthday is approaching quickly.

Thank you for a great thread with lots of previously unknown info! It was Brian on Lady Jane that prompted me to pick one up and learn to play it.

Brian was such a fine player of kinds of instruments.

Thank you for this thread. Brian was my fave in the original Stones and, IMHO, the best all around musician in the group. The cover of Lady Jane, a permanent part of my song mix, is very good.
