CAN’T GIVE IT AWAY ON SEVENTH AVENUE: THE ROLLING STONES AND NEW YORK CITY
By Christopher McKittrick
A complete history of The Rolling Stones in New York City.

When the Rolling Stones first arrived at JFK Airport in June 1964, they hadn’t even had a hit record in America. By the end of the decade, they were mobbed by packed audiences at Madison Square Garden and were the toast of New York City’s media and celebrity scene.

More than fifty years later, the history of New York City and the Rolling Stones have entwined and paralleled, with the group playing in nearly all of the Big Apple’s legendary venues. Along the way Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and the rest of the Stones have left an impact on the culture of the city, from the turbulent “Fun City” of the 1960s and ’70s through the twenty-first century. The evolving career of the Stones has often reflected the cultural changes of the city, as the Stones and their music were the center of social and political controversies during the same era that New York faced similar challenges.

Can’t Give It Away on Seventh Avenue: The Rolling Stones and New York City explores the history of the group through the prism of New York. It is a highly detailed document of the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between the world’s most famous band and America’s most famous city as well as an absorbing chronicle of the remarkable impact the city has had on the band’s music and career.

Looks like a potentially good read.
Not familiar with the author, but will be interested in the reviews if and when they come in from fans.

From a short interview with him.
"There’s more Rolling Stones history in New York City than any other city in America and, I would argue, any other city in the world"

Great title. No mention of the Stones 1980s in the Big Apple in the interview.

Isn't just a compilation of the things we already know?

I am reading the book now, and was up in NYC for four days last week.

Stayed at the Warwick.

This, then, in the chapter covering 1965 amused me:

"When the Stones arrived in New York on October 27 for their fourth American tour, they were greeted by a gigantic billboard in Times Square paid for by Klein promoting December’s Children (And Everybody’s). The band stayed at the City Squire Hotel on Seventh Avenue between 52nd and 53rd Streets (now the Sheraton New York hotel) after having been turned down by the 54th Street Warwick Hotel. Being rejected by New York hotels would become something of a problem for the band on their next tour."

I just finished the book. It's an entertaining and very thorough read. He's done his research! Most of it comes from published sources but he puts it all together through the eyes of one city. But the Stones do need another Madison Square Gardens gig to cement their NYC reputation.
