ESTELLINE...............................
Estelline Ball Pike was born in 1908
in Hoxie Kansas...
She got married to John Ball and then
remarried a gentleman named Pike...
She had a son and he was a sword
swallower also ...
Estelline was with numerous Mid-
western carnivals in the 30s and 40s..
she ended up in New York ...
in Madison Square Garden for the
Ringling show in 1960.
She had already been at the Flea Circus
at Hubert’s Museum for several years ...
on 42nd street.
She would take leave from the
Flea Circus to come work at Madison
Square Garden each year.
She worked the Garden ...
until they discontinued the sideshow
at the end of the 1967 season.
She stayed at Hubert’s until it
went out of business.
She had an economy apartment at
the Belvedere Hotel on West 48th
street...
Hubert’s Museum was in the
basement of the building.
There was a penny arcade upstairs,
the man that owned the building
ran the arcade ...
after Hubert's closed, Estelline
went to work for him as a cashier...

When I noticed that picture of the blindfolded lady was part of the sign ...

that's what led me to the names
Russ Lewis and Estelline Ball Pike.

Tough one on the fat lady.. but if I had to, I'd vote for C (Ruth)

Surprises me that Three Ball Charlie's real name is as of yet unidentified.
Arguably the most well known pic from the cover, as well as his being featured in Ripley's Believe it or Not etc. It's known where he's from (Humboldt, Nebraska) but his real name is apparently unknown(?)

Could be Elma...
Via pinterest, caption says:

Fat Elma c.1915 on back of photo: "This woman was here at the carnival her name is Elma More her weight was 375 lbs, advertised at 728..."

The background above even looks like Hubert's.
And that little person looks like Andy Potato Chips (of Hubert's fame) in the photo too.

The Fat Lady photo on Exile seems to be a lot older than the photos of Thelma above, though it is hard to tell because it is so small, and trying to enlarge online pic results in nothing but blurriness.
If I had the album in front of me with a magnifying glass, it might help to read the text, but all my vinyl is currently at my studio - will make a point to look tomorrow.

The fact that the little person who looks Andy Potato Chips (of Hubert's fame) is also in the pic of Thelma is almost convincing it is indeed Thelma, but still hard to say.
That said, I don't want to be the lone holdout, and if majority rules then so be it - Thelma it is. thumbs up

At first glance, I would have bet for Irene, but Thelma is not that far although on the original picture the fat lady seemed to have long hair...hard to tell.

My research was inconclusive - the pic is just as tiny on the vinyl cover, and a magnifying glass didn't help identify the blurry text.
Even broke out the Deluxe edition (which is mighty nice), and looked through the hardcover book that was included for any other info regarding the cover itself - nada. In the back section of book, there's several pages that include lots of cool pics pf vintage '72 memorabilia, tour posters, etc. (even a nice repro of the the yellow/red tour poster featuring three ball Charlie), but not a mention of Robert Frank or anything to do with the cover work. The only mention of Frank is the credit on the album proper - both regular vinyl and deluxe set. If they ever redo the deluxe set (a super duper whammy deluxe), they should include all of schillid's work here. If they can include a separate envelop of those replica postcards (forgot about those!), surely they can add something about the characters that help make the album cover so iconic. Or maybe shillid could write a book on his own -
'The Story Behind the Cover', and include other iconic album covers as well.
