This is the best thread ever for the best album ever. Thanks to all who shared the wonderful photos and information. The woman looking in the mirror or window is the one I'd like to know about. I think that she's topless...not sure.

Sincerely,

Charles Baudelaire

Interesting info from Ward regarding the origin of the photo used on the cover.

No doubt he's correct on the original 8 x 10's being posted on a wall at Hubert's Museum in NY. But sounds like the photo didn't come directly from Hubert's, but rather from the tattoo parlor where someone else had taken a photo of the wall and hung it.

Hubert's Museum was open from 1925-1969.
Other claims to fame from the museum include it being where Tiny Tim started out.
Shame it's no longer around, would make another stones related spot and generally cool museum in NY to check out cool smiley

Ya, gotta admit, a bunch of stones unturned on this one.

Well, honey, it's no rock 'n' roll show.

Headless Woman Illusion

...................

It's fairly easy to spot the edges of the mirrors in this shot:

The mirrors need to be set at exactly right angles.
Reflecting the background/ curtains surrounding Olga adds to the illusion.

In searching for images of the "original" photos that hung in the lobby of Hubert's Museum, I just ordered a hard copy of "Hubert's Freaks".

Ward Hall made it sound like a large wall that the photos were pinned to, and mentioned that it was in the lobby during his interview.
I'm curious as to wether the photos were rotated in and out or the wall was huge or ?? Regardless, excited to check it out!

I now believe that Robert Frank took the photograph on a wall at Hubert's Museum.

Not in a tattoo parlor as has been said. (I have even read the erroneous information that Robert Frank snapped the photo "somewhere on Route 66"! )

There are a few seconds of Frank zooming in and out on the same wall collage on the now-famous Exile film. (See HERE.)
I suppose that Frank must have had TWO cameras strapped around his neck. A Leica 35mm and a Super8mm movie camera.

As many people know, almost all of the available photos in Hubert's and the people that worked there were take by photographer Diane Arbus.
Diane Arbus ended her own life in 1971. But her amazing photographs will survive for a long time.

Like this one of an exotic dancer in the dressing room:

Not surprisingly, the background in the photo above resembles Franks' shot.

More about Hubert's later...

What about this little guy?

According to Wade Hall, this was ...

Major Mite, whose real name was
Clarence Chesterfield Howerton
( 1913 – 1975 )

from : [en.wikipedia.org]

Clarence Chesterfield Howerton, aka Major Mite, was an American circus performer who starred in the sideshow for over 25 years, 20 of which were with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Howerton "starred in the sideshow for over 25 years, 20 of which were with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. He was 2 ft 4 in (0.71 m) tall and performed with several groups from the early 1920s through the late 1940s, billed as the smallest man in the world. His small physique was often contrasted alongside larger circus sideshow acts, such as the juvenile obese and the excessively tall.

... He was featured in multiple films, including a role as a Munchkin in 1939's The Wizard of Oz. He retired in 1949."

Harry definitely did do the straight jacket escape quite a bit.. but I don't think that's him.
Seems like too much hair.. maybe reading too much into Ward's video, but Houdini being just below Joe Allen on the cover (who Ward mentioned a few times) you can bet he would have mentioned Harry Houdini (although as he also mentioned a few times, he didn't have his glasses) cool smiley I think it was likely another person performing the stunt.

Not sure how I haven't stumble on this before, but Hubert's Museum has an active website with a lot of info on the stars ( a good portion you have to be a paying member for) but a lot of free info as well.. lots of categories for the performers and Harry's names not listed under daredevils.

Great sleuthing schillid!
Guess that would have to be Houdini.. based on the elaborate stunt and that in some early pics he does have longer hair, must be.

Ups the cool factor of the album cover in my opinion, which is already pretty high cool smiley
Great work!
